  1. The irony to see a reaction like this over a four-lettered bit of slang (that's another issue, the big deal people make over nothing when it comes to "curses")...where was this level of outrage when Mr. P. was caught preaching? Such a sad state of affairs...

P.S. I thought the "curse filter" was automated, for what it's worth.

The filter is automated but didn't pick up the variation. I assumed it would self correct the word but it didn't.

  2. Now, how did that one "slip" by the moderator!  Hmmmmm.....

It should not have. The bad word filter should have picked it up and I should have seen it even if the filter did not. Even KOTW can err. Thanks for pointing it out I corrected it.

  3. For Mr LaClair.  I have a question from your comment made on this blog on Nov26, 2006 at 02:23 p.m.  In his own words he says “We have nothing to gain from this but a lot of aggravation.”  I want to make sure I have this correct so I copied and pasted the exact words from your post.  If you have nothing to gain then why would your wife even have to bring up the fact that you do not wish to sue?  With you being a lawyer I know she was probably rehearsed and made sure to say that it was referred to as you being righteous and would not sue.  Hoping that is the case.  By now everyone knows your case, even nationwide so you have gained plenty. Matthew has been interviewed by several known TV shows.  If you were a “good lawyer” you would have resolved this issue by now and stop the smearing of the Town of Kearny and all the people in Kearny as well.  For your own gain you have prostituted your son and your quest long enough. Not even sure if this wasn’t your idea in the first place. It is time for you to move on.

You have gained plenty now enough already.

Also checked on one word you used and one that I did, so we have the definitions correct:

    pros•e•ly•tize   (prŏs'ə-lĭ-tīz')

To induce someone to convert to one's own religious faith.

    pros•ti•tute   (prŏs'tĭ-tōōt', -tyōōt')

A person who willingly uses his or her talent or ability in a base and unworthy way,  usually for money.

Please note that the above post was allowed per KOTW's policy to err on the side of allowing individuals to express their opinion without editing from KOTW.

It is also KOTW's policy not to get involved in the discussions. KOTW's opinions are expressed on our Main Page. In fairness to Mr. Paul LaClair, KOTW must state that it is clear that Mr. LaClair has not "prostituted" his son. On the contrary, Mr. LaClair has shown great restraint in the face of some harsh criticism on this discussion board. Why allow the post to go through? Because I believe stongly in our democracy and the importance of freedom of speech. It is my belief that the continued attacks on the LaClairs on KOTW formed in part the basis of the New York Times article. The LaClairs deserve praise not ridicule.

So much for KOTW's policy on not getting involved in discussions. I just simply could not allow the post to go without a comment. The word "prostitute" is simply too strong.

  4. Again, the preview gives me little hope that the quotation tags are working properly.

Apologies in advance if the appearance is bedraggled.

    And you judge people.

    :)

He wasn't revered. The comment was sarcastic, intended to highlight the fact that his assertions had no evidential support.

Are you a priest of His order, then?

Okay, at least you're consistent (or trying to appear to be).

I don't expect a teacher to completely remove his deeply-help opinions in check where they touch on the curriculum.  Not even in the case of a philosophy professor whose favorite subject is to argue against the existence of god with students.

Let's mark that down:  Students shall be in school roughly seven hours out of the day, during which time they are not to have informed discussion of highly controversial religious ideas.  Religious ideas can still be treated on Saturday or Sunday, assuming that the student has finished his secular homework.

Religion must not be important if it's off-limits so much of the time.  You agree?

I have yet to see the evidence in support of the claim that evidence is a word rarely seen in religion.

It's not your religion, is it?

He only asked one question, AFAICT.  If you're talking about my responses in general, the first two were entirely non-sarcastic.  Try to be more accurate, please.

I do so regularly.  Where an argument is made, however, it can be enough to point out the flaws in the other person's argument without bothering to advance a contrary conclusion.  An atheist, for example, could criticize an argument against the existence of god.

I've already noted how skeptics tend to abhor bearing the burden of proof, however.  I'll count you among those.

    This article?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/18/nyregion...i=5070&emc=eta1

I've already read that one.  I've looked at the reporting that's been done on the story.  You have no room to criticize me, there.

Newspapers are not that reliable, for what it's worth.  Quotations are commonly taken out of context, and arithmetic is routinely botched.

Correct.  You get a gold star for paying attention.

You would not be charged with breaking the First Amendment if you did that.  You'd be charged with assault with a deadly weapon or the like.  The First Amendment would have no bearing on your trial.

    The First Amendment, you mean?

Are you suggesting that I committed a logical fallacy?  Which one (and where)?

Or are you demanding that I stop identifying the logical fallacies of others?  If the latter, why should I?

Why not?  Because you say so?

It must be your religion, since you so hate to give evidence in support.  :)

Because we need a skeptical pantheon instead of just the other guy declaring the conclusion true by divine fiat?

He said "no matter how ugly and eroded the bricks become"  I reasoned that total erosion could take place, and following his logic the wall would still stand after it had completely eroded.   Still, I didn't assume that I knew what he meant, so I phrased it as a question so that he could affirm or deny.

    Really?  Explain how.

    :)

We could use you as a case in point, under the assumption that your total lack of evidence means that you're religious.

    Bryan,

I tested the quotes feature. It maxes out at 10 quotes per post. I have been unable to correct this apparent flaw in the discussion board.

I will continue to work towards a solution. In the interim, please break up your posts so the quote feature works.

    Regards,

  5. In the law this is called a fair inference. A 15-year teaching veteran does not do this much proselytizing out of the clear blue. A reasonable person listening to these recordings would conclude this not new behavior. Besides, witnesses have come forward with signed letters to the school board attesting that this has happened before.

    Mr. LaClair:

It appears that you registered as a member with the name Paul. In order for your name to appear as a member, you must first log in. If you fail to log in, any post which uses a member's name will have Guest_ attached to it indicating a guest posted using a member's name.

I noticed that you have posted several messages since registering (I'm assuming you registered as Paul.)

A long explanation to say: Sign in and your posts won't have Guest_Paul on them.

  6. Im just wondering how many people you are billing for the time that  you spend responsing to KOTW. Are you doing this on your time or theirs? Based on the responses to post, you are doing this all day. Gosh I hope I am not on your case load! My Bills would be crazy or I would not be getting half the attention for my legal matters as you are giving KOTW.

What's wrong with giving KOTW some attention?

  7. I forget which night it was but there were 10 posts to this thread and the next morning there were 5.  Yer there were posts deleted on this topic.

I am sure there are people that can teach soccer at this level that speak English as well.

The message board did go down this week on Monday morning. The message board was then restored from a back up. It is possible that posts were deleted because of the restoration (from a backup). KOTW did not delete these posts on purpose. This week was the first time the board has gone down since its inception.

  8. Webmaster, Why are there so many post lost? Not just on this topic but many others?

There were no post deleted (archived) on this topic. I'm not sure what "sparky" was referring to when he said posts were deleted. I rarely delete (archive) posts unless the majority of the post is inappropriate or unverifiable. I prefer to edit objectionable content before deleting. Those who have been long term members or guests will agree with the above statement. I may not agree with a post but my job is to facilitate conversations on topics affecting our community. I try to allow as many posts as possible.

  9. What do you mean by archived?  Does that mean it will never be posted?  Why not just say that it will not be posted and state a reason?

I used to delete posts when they could not be edited. Several months back, I set up a section on the site which cannot be accessed by the public where questionable posts are stored temporarily (or forever). I say temporarily because if the information is confirmed, the post is published. For the most part however you are correct archived=deleted for most posts.

  10. Of course you posted this one... it's called playing the game.

Now post the ones that you have been holding out.

If it has not been posted to date, it is awaiting editing or it has been archived. If the post contained information I cannot verify and it is difficult to edit, it gets archived. Not everything submitted to KOTW gets posted.

  11.   THIS IS NOT MY POST!!!!!!!!!   KOTW WAKE UP!!!

    Guest and Members:

Member posts are marked as such. If you read a post that is not from a member, please note it could be from anyone. The guest used OldFart56. (note the period) to bypass the boards automatic notation that the person is a guest trying to use a member name. Clever.

To the person trying to imitate OldFart56, please stop. If you want to express your opinion, do so, but use your own name or Guest.

  12. :)    for all to read I DID NOT POST THIS!!!! AND KOTW SHOULD NOT LET ANYBODY AT ANY TIME USE MY NAME OR POSTING I/D    KOTW WAKE UP YOUR SLEEPING AT THE SWITCH!! AND THIS IS OLD NEWS AND IT WAS UN TRUE!!!!!NOW WHAT LISA DID TO JAMES/C THAT WAS WRONG!!!

    Dear OldFart56:

I'm glad you clarified that you were not the author of the initial post. As a member your "Member name" is password protected. Nobody else can use your name as a member on the board. If a poster uses your "member name" it is noted as that name_guest so everyone knows without a doubt its not you. The initial post used OldFart as a guest and not OldFart56.

  13. If you are having trouble directly accessing the video, try the following:

    1. click on the following link http://www.wnbc.com/video/index.html

    2. Click on Search (on the right) and then type in the search box "chemical" (without the quotes) and click search

    3. Two video choices should come up. Click one and the video should play.

If you have a blockup blocker installed or enabled in Windows you can turn it off temporarily to view the videos. Remember to turn it back on when you are finished.

  14. Since today is Day 5 since the board has been back up, tomorrow  we will have broken a record.

The more I use the Board, the more I like it. I think you'll come to like it too.

Tell your friends. I think the Board is a great way to build a better sense of community.

    Then again I'm biased.
