1. The vehicle that Mayor Santos is using is a Hudson County supplied vehicle. I belive it's a black Ford Crown Vic. Under state law the mayor cannot use that vehicle for personal or town of Kearny business. That car was supplied by Hudson County for County business only. For all you recall mayor santos people, if you know for fact or see that santos is using the car foe personal or town business you can contact the Hudson County prosecuters office or the State of NJ Attorney Generals office for misuse of a county vehicle.

2. While I have no children going to KHS, I am a taxpayer and do support the use of school uniforms. Or at the very least a school dress code. No more micro miniskrts, micro shorts, long shorts. low cut jeans or tops, no under garments showing. I've seen some of your kids going to KHS in the mornings, it's appalling in most cases the girls look like hookers and the boys look like gang bangers.Just recently I was on Kearny Ave at 8:00am on my way to work a girl passed by on the sidewalk carrying a KHS ID card she was wearing micro shorts with the bottom of her ass cheeks hanging out. Another girl on Devon st had on a micro mini. This is your fault as parents in having little or no control over how your kids present themselves in public. I hate to use the cliche When I was in school however When I was in school 77 - 81 the girls and boys did NOT dress this way. Any girls who did was labeled a slut or school whore, boys who dressed as such were laughed at and shunned as being a troublemaker. So if you want your sons labeled as gangbangers, and your daughters labeled as sluts continue with the status quo.

3. I share your frustration, only you can't limit tenants to 1 parking permit. I have 2 cars my wife's and mine. She has the typical 9 to 5 job while my work schedule is very flexible. I've been after various town aministrations for the last 15 years to put in place parking permits that would place a limit of no more than 2 per household. Those with driveways and out of state plates would not be eligible for permits. I repeatedly get the same two responses each time. " We will look into it" or " We are looking into it". If you have a neighbor that has 2 cars with for sale signs in them I'd call the KPD and report them for running a used car business.I belive there's a town ordinance that limits the number of cars you can sell on the street to one at a time or register as a business

4. I mean really what does it matter if the build a " Gentlemans " club in SOUTH Kearny. You live in North Kearny. Are you going to drive past it every day or are you afraid your kids going to get a job pole dancing in there. You want redlight district drive by Kearny High School sometime. The clothes the girls wear make them look like hookers on 42nd st. As for the supposed two already where are they. I have seen NO clubs in the Main town of Kearny. If your refering to the 18 wheeler that place has been there for close to 30 years. Get over yourself

5. Obama served in the Illinois State Senate from January 1997 to November 2004. I believe that counts as "elected service". Are you planning to erase GWB's time in state government from his resume' as well? Or Rudy Giuliani's time as Mayor?

What S.501 are you referring to? There are only two S.501's during Obama's time as a U.S. Senator.

This one:

S.501

Title: A bill to provide a site for the National Women's History Museum in the District of Columbia.

Sponsor: Sen Collins, Susan M. [ME] (introduced 3/3/2005) Cosponsors (23)

and this one:

S.501

Title: A bill for the relief of Ilko Vasilev Ivanov, Anelia Marinova Peneva, Marina Ilkova Ivanova, and Julia Ilkova Ivanova.

Sponsor: Sen Kyl, Jon [AZ] (introduced 2/6/2007) Cosponsors (None) Private bill

Neither is "a resolution honoring those soldiers who have fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan".

I checked if there might have been an Illinois Senate bill (even though you apparently don't think that counts as "elected service") numbered 501 that fits your description. There were several SB0501's during Obama's time in office there, but none of those have anything to do with honoring fallen soldiers either.

Obama was an Illinois Senator for 8 years before becoming a U.S. Senator. That makes 11 years of elected experience.

He stated no such thing. Guest was obviously wrong in saying that the examples were from Obama's first year, but that is not the same as stating that Obama's first year was 2006. At least one of the bills was from 2007, so why not accuse him of stating that Obama's first year was 2007?

The S.501 amendment was from Obama;s Senate web page. hiss voting record for the 109th and 110th congressional sessions are there

6. He was in the state legislature, but what the poster obviously meant is that Obama was against the Iraq invasion from the beginning, while Clinton and McCain weren't.

If Obama was so against the war in Iraq why then did he vote yes on all funding of the war except the last time. Only when funding for Katrina and farm aid was included did he vote no.

7. Do you even know what voting "present" means? Go ahead, define what it means for me, if you can.

The list of Obama's legislative accomplishments is too substantive to post.

During the first 8 (eight) years of his elected service he sponsored over 820 (eight hundred twenty) bills. He introduced 233 (two hundred thirty-three) regarding healthcare reform,

125 on poverty and public assistance,

112 crime fighting bills,

97 economic bills,

60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,

21 ethics reform bills,

15 gun control,

6 veterans affairs and many others.

His *first year* in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 (one hundred fifty-two) bills and co-sponsored another 427 (four hundred twenty-seven).

These included:

1. **The Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law,

2. **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law,

3. **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act - passed the Senate,

4. **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law,

5. **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill - in committee,

6. and many more.

In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 (eight hundred ninety) bills and co-sponsored another 1096 (one thousand ninety-six).

Go ahead, reply with a one-liner so you can prove once again how ignorant you are. You're only helping personify exactly what's wrong with people like you.

8 years? your kidding right. First off Obama has only been a Senator for 3 years, being sworn in Jan 1 2005. his first senate vote was on Jan 6 2005. You talk about accomplishments how about his Did Not Vote on S.501 a resolution honoring those soldiers who have fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2. Obama's NO vote on S.amendment 4340 " to create a point of order against bills that would raise gas prices.

3. Obama voted NO on S. amendment 4232 " to pay down the federal debt and eliminate government waste"

4. Obama voted NO on S. amendment 2620 " to increase access to health insurance for low income children based on actual need.

5. Obama voted NO on S. amendment 4897 " to make available 700 million to eliminate the production and trade of Opium and Heroin in Afghanistan, and to prevent terrorists from using the procedes.

You even contradict yourself. Clearly you have no clue as to what you write. You state Obama has 8 years of elected experience yet he's only been a Senator for 3 years. You state in his first year as being 2006 yet Obama was Sworn in, in 2005.

8. The Senate doesn't cast 144 important votes in three years. How many important votes did he miss, and on how many of those, if any, would his voting yes or no have changed the outcome?

Obama's opponents are desperate to stop him. It's going to take more than two-bit talking points this time.

Obama in his 3 year career as a Senator has missed 40.6% of Senate votes. As a point of order Obama did Not vote in approx. 90% of the 2007 issues.

9. He voted against going into Iraq stating that we should be concentrating on Afghanistan when it was not a popular statement to make. Hillary and McCann on the other hand voted to support the war in Iraq. That my friend is a huge accomplishment: He thought for himself and lead instead of followed when it mattered the most. If others had done the same we would not be in the mess we are today.

I find Obama voting against the war in Iraq laughable if it was'nt a pathetic attempt to gather support for him. First Brainiac the Iraq war vote was in 2002. Obama was'nt sworn in as a Senator until Jan. 1 2005. His very first vote was on Jan 6 2005.

10. Kearny Residents,

Here's the latest from Mayor Santos, who emailed me earlier -

The Town Council passed a resolution opposing the heliport.

Local approvals (from the City of Newark) are necessary for the project but Mayor Cory Booker supports it and none of the Newark North Ward officials has opposed this.

Other approvals that we are aware of have to be obtained from federal agencies (the FAA and HUD). During the public portion of the Council meeting, Mr. Mayor found it to be appopriate to raise this matter with our Congressman, Steven Rothman, when he comes to Kearny on March 24 for a meeting with resdidents.

Please write your Congressman Steve Rothman! Please write Mr. Mayor! Please talk to your neighbors! Let's not let this happen easy!!! I will be setting up a basic website for information and a place on-line to start communicatating!

http://www.house.gov/rothman/contact_steve.htm!! I have a form letter, just copy it and send!! -

Dear Mr. Congressman,

I am a Kearny resident and homeowner. I write to you for your assistance in regards to the recent Newark Helipad proposal. This is a situation that has caused some immediate concern for my family's quality of life. To say this is an added stress would be a fair assessment.

I understand you will be addressing this issue on March 24th in the Kearny Town Hall. We want to make sure that you will fight for the Kearny residents! Now is the time to get involved to help prevent this Heliport from becoming a dangerous reality to my neighborhood.

Steve I don't know if you know this, but Newark already has a helipad on the Passiac river. Across from NJPAC. It sits in Minnish Park. Passiac river on one side, McCarter Highway on the other. The area is big enough to house all that Pegasus wants to put there. New concrete bulkheads were put in by the Army Corp a couple of years ago. I know this one becaause I worked on the job and 2 because the helicopters fly overhead non stop

11. A Fox poll was conducted Sat. on the campus of Ohio St. A group of 20 seniors, male and female,

white, black and Latino, were asked to name an accomplishment of Barack Obama. Not one (1) student

was able to identify any accomplishments. One student said "well, he's black and he's a senator" , which

drew a few laughs. This will be the first time in American history that a presidential candidate's resume

will be blank, except for "he's black and he's a senator".

Is this the same Obama Who has never once visited out troops in Iraq or Afghanistan?. Is this the same Obama who refuses to place his hand over his heart during the singing of our national anthem. Is this the same Obama who has stated that he voted against the Iraq war even though the war started in 2003 and he did'nt become a senator until 2005.Is this the same Obama who has voted against a flag desicretion law. I know this Obama has missed 40.6% of congressional votes since 2005, I know this Obama wants to increase the H-1B and H-2B visas. I know this Obama is nothing more than a black John Kerry, I voted for it before I voted against it.

12. If by some strange quirk of fate you're actually correct for a change at least you'll have plenty of time to learn the phrase: Madam President

 If by some chance of Fate Hitlery wins, Ive got my bumper sticker ready. Madame President and first B**ch Bill

13. You're doing very well or you're over assessed. The average property assessment was $7402 in 2006, gotten from public record. Just look.

The over assessment you can take care. But don't complain if you're doing much better than the average property owner.

post-655-1194790911_thumb.jpg

73105

Over assessed is an understatement. I also looked up the property tax's in Kearny. The last time property tax's in Kearny were Reassessed was back in the 70's. Now property tax's are figured by the price you buy your home for. Say for instance if you buy a home in the $400 thousand range you can expect to pay $10,000+ in property tax's, your also paying depending on your lot size. My parents are paying on a supposed double lot. Now if you go three houses away the neighbors property is bigger both in frontage and depth yet the property is listed as a single lot. I've suggested to the mayor that the town do a property tax RE assessment town wide.. Not only will some tax's go down but the town will be able to shut down all illegal apartments, over crowding etc.

14. All legitimate expenses which the poster hasn't volunteered.

Then again, what about the properyt owner's commercial depreciation deduction, property tax deduction, mortgage interest deduction? The true profit may be even higher.

72169

[/quote

The only time i'll see a profit is when I sell the 3 houses, collect the 1.5+ million on the sales. And move out of Kearny. By then you all will be paying close to 15g's a year in taxes

15. Still an anti-Santos rant with no proposed solutions. Still a complete waste of space.

There are a lot of complaints (even though they're coming from like the same five or six people); don't worry about filling a quota there. What we need now from you are alternatives and solutions. Kicking Santos out wouldn't magically fix anything.

Let me know when you actually have something constructive to say.

71111

you know strife I see you opening your pie hole quite often, usually with nothing coming out but hot air. How about some suggestions from you. however I don't think you have anything to add just being an antagonist

16. How many apartments does your family own?  What's the annual rent collected from those apartments? My guess is that your family is making quite a bit of money off those houses if your property taxes are $11,000 a year (that's a 3 or 4 family).  Do you realize you need schools, police and fire protection to rent those apartments?

As for Portuguese-American citizens, they're anything but close-mouthed.  In fact, it seems the Mayor's loudest critics from the day he became Mayor were/are of Portuguese descent.

71154

Two of the houses are 6 family bldgs, 1 is a single family. In one of those buildings we have 7 children attending Kearny schools, in another 2 children attending. The monthly rents vary between $750.00 and $800.00. What you fail to realize is that the tax's on my parents home is paid out of the apartments. By the time we pay for tax's, water, gas & electric, Liability insurance, Maint,Refurbishment when a tenant moves out sometimes the damages exceed the security deposit. By the time we add up all the expenses we just about break even. We try to keep things affordable I could just as easily charge $1000.00 a month and turn a slight profit. Remember this is a business not a charity. If you can't pay your rent thats what evictions are for. I'd rather not resort to that.

17. More and more property owners are fed up with this Mayor and Council for there failure in understanding the plight of the average homeowner.A Mayor with no solutions is a signal that we need new direction for Kearny. The Recall effort is a grassroots effort that will take alot of work but the reason for a recall when explained to the public will be easy, Bottom line is Mayor Santos has raised our taxes every year he has been Mayor and as a result the town has reached TILT. Many residents have either put their house up for sale or could be at risk of losing their home.    "LETS GO KEARNY!! STORM THE NEXT TOWN COUNCIL MEETING AND LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD" and then be part of the Recall Effort.

68706

I agree with you, but it's not just the average taxpayer feeling the pinch here. My parents are senior citizens living in Kearny. does this mayor and town council understand the hardship their placing on Kearny's elderly. Or how about renters in town, everytime Santo's and his cabal raise tax's I have to raise the rents on my tenants. Those of us who own multifamily bldgs are hurting also. My family pays close to $33,000.00 in tax's yearly to Kearny. 3 houses at approx. $11,000 each. One of my parents neighbors pays $14,000 a year. So when the mayor say's the average tax bill is just under $7500.00 I say BS. Unfortunatly there currently are no viable Republican candidates to challenge Santos. What I find to be amusing is that the very people who voted for Santos are being the most closeted vocal. what I mean by that is a large percentage of the Portuguese population in my neighborhood are complaining about tax's but won't take on one of their own.

18. Like it or not your stuck with this guy. He has a tight grip on the town. As far as getting someone to run against him your out of luck. He's in with the boy's in Trenton and the county. Your done. Look at all the empty store fronts on Kearny ave. What's left? He's busy building his future at your expense and does nothing for the town. If there is truth to the talk about private invetigators bills I would like to know what that is about. Look, just move out and start new some where else. If you really want change vote for change in Trenton this november that will get attention levels up. Don't complain, Act! All the best.  Former resident.

63557

Santos may very well be the County's boy, But I remember reading some where that Santos is out of favor with the Politico's in Trenton. I hate to say it but the only reason Santos keeps getting reElected is because of the large Portuguese population, they like him he's one of their own. If we had a large Italian population we'd have a Italian mayor.

19. 2nd it's time to CAP all town employee salaries teachers included. Look at the Deputy chiefs they make 6 figures in salary. The town can save money by switching town vehicles from gasoline to E85 or natural gas. The other day I was on route 1 in Edison, who drives past me a Town of Kearny container truck.

Maybe they were picking up new tree's to replace the ones that were destroyed by local youths? Or maybe they were doing some other business, all the trucks have GPS and they are monitored, I am sure. I have learned not to jump to conclusions

if you saw the truck and it bothers you so much, call the town as a concerned citizen and ask why the truck was there in Edison, so far from Kearny.

70607

I did call the DPW and was told " We'll look into it"

20. (er, you screwed up your quoting significantly there...I just kept the most recent part)

My comments are more critical of the people who do a lot of complaining but aren't actually taking any of the action that needs to be taken. In fact, the only action people are really talking about is ousting Santos, which of course wouldn't magically fix any problems.

Don't you think these comments are a bit petty? First of all, there isn't really any proof of either--the former maybe, if you lived next door or across the street and are watching the house all day. And the latter--you must be joking. Are you accusing Santos of literally pretending to be married? Don't you think it's slightly more likely that maybe his wife isn't into politics and chooses not to get as involved as he does? Really, now.

70568

Your right of course I was being a "Bit" petty. I guess you could say I deplore Mayor Santos. For years I've gotten face to face with him over parking down on this end of town. I've either gotten blown off or fed the auto response " I'll look into it". It's been going on for close to 10 years from councilman to mayor. Santos is more interested in being Hillary Clintons Kearny lapdog or getting his face in the paper.

21. The Substation has a desk officer and a patrol officer assigned from 2pm-10pm 365 days a year, also the Community Oriented Policing unit has its office in the substation.  If it was dark at 330 pm, then you need glasses sparky.

70552

Glass's aside. I have personally walked up to the bldg, and found the front door locked on several occasions. Since we did promote several officers to various ranks why is this station only open for 1 shift ?. We've been getting hit by home invasions on this end of town alot lately with a large percentage happening before 12:00 noon or roving bands of teens out after the 10:00pm curfew. Do you mean to tell me that the substation closes at 10:00pm and that now we'll have to wait for a unit to arrive from the Laurel ave station, thus giving the perp a chance to flee.

22. The "teachers included" caught my eye--what's the average salary for a teacher in Kearny? Do you know?
I do know from a friend who is a teacher that their making in the $ 50,000.00 + salary range.

I've never seen any actual people there myself either.

Well, I think one won't really know that until they bring concerns to him personally and are turned away or something. Lots is being said around here, but I don't think anyone's actually taken Santos up on his "open debate" thing yet.

70422

I know that you stick up for this mayor from your comments. however Santos has'nt been on the up and up with town residents. First Santos claims to live on Johnston ave in his parents 3 family house. Yet in the last 15 years I've only seen him near the house twice. I live a few houses away from this house. Once has been taking the garbage cans out and once driving by in his County owned car. The mayor also has claimed to be married yet his wife is seemingly absent from town functions. Recently the monument dedication on Belgrove drive.

23. Smart guy...............  the town should put up.  We all know they are off duty.  But thanks for putting the word out for them that they need to get paid if the kids want to play.  Hey where are those officers at Vet's Field again? Take a look at all the people involved at ground level who make any youth/rec sports work so the kids are able to play at all. They're off duty too.

69130

You do know that the field your complaining about does'nt even belong to the town of Kearny. That field belongs to the State of NJ department of Veterens. The town only leases the land. Personally I could do without General's football. It's mainly the parents who cause most of the problems.

24. Recently I sent a letter to the Kearny observer over this so called " Healthy Debate" that Mayor Santos yearns for. The high salaries that the KPD and KFD have is only half the story. How much money is invested by the town in Health care and pensions for town employees. How much does the town spend to insure the families of town employees. 1 solution would be to have all town employees to pay into their health and pension plans an amount based on percentage. If the town is paying for the families to be covered, let the employees pay for it like we do in the real world. I know in my family I pay $400.00 a month and thats a 50/50 split with my employer.

3. In another post someone had mentioned the south end of town substation, wherein the town promoted several officers to man this substaion, yet the station is rarely open. I've come home from work at 3:30 pm the station is dark. 3:00am the same. A waste of money? or were we conned.

Mayor Santos is'nt interested in healthy debate, this is only a ruse to make excuses from.

25. Does anyone know if we still have a captain, lieut, 2 sargants at the police sub-station? That seems pretty excessive to me.

68934

Most times the substation is closed. I go by there almost every day. On the rare occasion you'll see a patrol car or two parked. But for the most part the substation is dark.
