  1. Highland ave wasnt plowed once. Talk about total incompetence! Seriously where do our tax dollars go? The average home owner in Kearny pays $10,000 a year! This is an outrage! I wonder if the rich manor section of Kearny is plowed, hmmmmm

The rich manor section? your kidding. Pleasant place was'nt plowed until late monday. Chestnut between woodland and Johnston was'nt plowed until 3am tuesday morning, the fire department shoveled out hydrants only to have the town plow them back in.

  2. The layed-off firemen should get a jump on a job stocking shelves at Walmart before more lay-offs of fireman create too much competition. You see, most people actually work at their jobs when they go to them. The only real skills a G.E.D. firemen has is possibly being able to cook. Fast food restaurants at minimum wage would suit them just fine. They wouldn't be able to sleep and watch TV at these jobs but at least it will help them grow up, mature, and find out what real work is. These are not part time jobs either. Can you just imagine a layed-off fireman having to work more than two days a week. Welcome to reality boys and I can only hope that there are many, many more of your fellow self-created legends in your own minds firemen right behind you. God bless the smart and Honorable Mayor Santos.

These Firemen GED or otherwise are worth every penny they recieve in salary. Whether they work 1 day a week or 7. The one thing these guys have that all you loudmouths lack is the balls to do the job. How many of you loudmouths that are all for these layoffs, how many of you would risk YOUR lives to run into a burning building to save the life of a perfect stranger. I'll bet that the clown who wrote the post I'm answering Does'nt even have the stones to run back into a burning house to save his own family

  3. The Town's not looking at the big picture here, We could save the layoffs to the fire department by making the Kearny Rescue Squad part of KFD. One (1) Emergency/ambulance vehicle per station with 2 KFD/EMT's per shift. I don't know how many of you have been taken by Kearny Rescue Squad to Clara Maass recently, but a simple ride is $300.00 plus, no IV,bandages,Oxygen etc. Do away with the Emergency Squad as a seperate entity it's a waste of money the way it is now.

  4. Does anyone know what's going on with BASF on Passaic Ave near Top's Diner? It looks like they are tearing down the plant but I was wondering if anyone knows if it has already been acquired by a developer and if any plans have come before the zoning/planning boards.

The building is coming down, and that the site is considered " Contaminated"

  5. As a homeowner close to the High School,I find it very inconsiderate of the town for not adding lines on King St..For all the taxes we pay in this town I and others who live near King St. are tired of haveing to walk sometimes for blocks to get to our houses. The people who are working on the school along with the students and teachers are filling the area so much that there is no where to park anymore for us homeowners. The Superintendent should have some consideration and find parking for the teachers at least.

That front lawn of the school should be removed and teacher parking should be put in there.Didn't anyone ever think of that. For a school that has so many degrees that is a no brainer. We are sick and tired of being the people who has to pay for that also.

I remember when I was a senoir at KHS we all used to park on King or Garfield aves, even 30 years ago parking was at best difficult. The teachers and admin, have better parking conditions today and should be using them. Whether it be the old plaza, the school parking garage, or the Bergen ave garage. King st should be resident only from 4pm til 7am.

  6. Thanks, but I was already corrected, SLICK. Now, since you're so high and mighty about your knowledge of parking laws, why don't you go back to third grade and figure out the difference between "your" and "you're"? You'll find that YOUR intelligence is lacking and YOU'RE not quite that smart after all.

By the way, I'm taking up two parking spots across the street from my house right now. My neighbors are going to be PISSSED.

    F**K you very much, assholes.

A Grammer Nazi, boy am I impressed, Next time you park across the sidewalk let me know I'll be sure to get you that first class $50.00 ticket

  7. "Also, if you have a driveway, dont be lazy and park across the bottom of your driveway just because you don't want to open the gates."

that's not a parking law. just because you own more property, and therefore a driveway, that doesn't mean you should lose your street parking privileges. sometimes my family parks no cars in their driveway, just so that we can park all 4 of ours in the street to piss off people like you. and yes, we have a gate, but F**K if i'm going to open that thing.

Your wrong slick, if 1) you park across the sidewalk thats illegal and you can be ticketed and possibly towed, 2) you cannot park across the apron blocking your own driveway again you can be ticketed for illegal parking. See thats how people like some get even with people like you

  8. Any ideas how to fix the town wide problem?

First off you can complain to the Mayor and Town Council till your blue in the face, they don't care. I've been to town council meetings on and off for the last 20 years complaining about parking and I always get the same "canned" response of " We'll look into it" and they never do. 2 years ago I complained to Santos directly about the out of state plates that crowd parking spaces. His response was they live in town, when it was mentioned that in most cases these people were refusing to register their vehicles in NJ he could care less.

As for KPD you have to prove that those with out of state plates do in fact live in Kearny and have been here for more than 60 days. On any given morning I can look out my window and swear I live in NY,Mass,North Carolina,or Maryland. Whats needed is either a petition or a large gathering at a town council meeting with everyone telling the mayor and town council to do their damn jobs

  9. Has anyone heard anything on the progress of the county's work at the tressle on Passaic Avenue? It's been nearly three months, has work started? Does anyone know how long this job is estimated to take?

    Thanks for any updates.

Since it is a county job it could take up to 1 year to complete

  10. Complaining about or reporting illegal apartments is not being a tattle-tale. Illegal apartments are, well, illegal. There are building codes for a reason. These apartments violate those codes. Be stupid and defend them, but wait until some building -- meant for one family but has five living in it -- goes on fire and all those people get killed because IT WASN'T SAFE FOR ALL OF THEM TO BE LIVING THERE.

Had that happen in a 2 family down the street from me about 3 years ago. The owner of a 2 family was in the process of " Digging" out his basement to create additional living space. Due to the illegal activity the house caught fire and burned to the ground, the KFD removed from this " 2" family house 28 mattress's.

  11. This is really weak, if you really feel that there are illegal apartments post a little more detail not just some vague details. If the mayor and council don’t respond to your letter / emails then have the observer do an article on it, show them proof of course. Kearny resident have to stop whining about stuff and actually do something. If you think there are illegal apartment, insurance fraud like the other post, email the mayor or the chief of police. If they don’t respond ask for a Request for Public Records (OPRA), and bring it up to the council so that the responds can be record in meeting and explain why they didn’t act. What really musty go are whiners, if you want to make this a better place, then do something about it. I see no leader or candidate even try to solve these problems or any other problems.

The original poster of this thread is right you know. Illegal apartments abound in Kearny with no one in town government giving a hoot/ I've complained to the mayor and town council repeatedly, I've written letters and phone calls to the building inspectors office all to no avail. On my street alone there's several buildings. I have one family whose running their 1 family home as a rooming house where they rent out in both the attic and basement. A 2 family with an attic apartment with only 1 means of access/egress, A 2 family with a basement apartment again only 1 means of access/egress. Go 2 blocks down and you have 2 Two family houses both with basement apartments. The Chief of Police and Fire department have bothing to do with illegal apartments,

This falls straight to the building inspector, and the various building code officials for things such as wiring and plumbing. Fines are already in place against the homeowner. Should an illegal aprtment be dicovered and the tenant evicted the homeowner Must pay the tenant 6x the total rent. If I give you $1000.00 in rent and get caught you must pay me $6000.00

  12. AND OF COURSE THE OBSERVER HAS NOTHING ON THIS. LISA, YOU CALL YOUR RAG A NEWSPAPER? YOU CAN'T EVEN POST THE BIGGEST NEWS STORY OF THE YEAR TO YOUR WEB SITE. YOU AND YOUR STAFF ARE WORTHLESS!

Don't get your panties in a twist, the Observer is actually printed on Monday evening for tuesday afternoon delivery.

  13. It's not just the post office, the town of Kearny has gotten very lazy as of late. I mention the bridge on the border between East Newark and Kearny, the sidewalk was left unshoveled and salted it was nothing but a sheet of ice. Chestnut st between woodland and Johnston ave was neither plowed or salted until complaints were made to the department of public works.

  14. Okay, I was all for uniforms for the high school students....but tan shirts and black pants??? Who picked these colors and whom all agreed? Not only are they not smart looking but tan shirts are hard to find. I tmakes no sense to me that 7th and 8th grade students are wearing khaki colored pants and then have to go go out and buy black pants once they enter the high school. Good Grief, Board of Ed. What were you thinking?

I think Tan pants or skirts along with Maroon polo shirts would have been a better choice

  15. Russo Development BOUGHT his property. He wants to do ground level parking. So your example doesn't work.

I'm curious though. What's across the street anyway that's not for sale, or not town owned, or not a concrete grinding operation?

My example does in fact work. The original plan for the property as laid out by Russo Development would be for retail stores on the ground floor of the apartment complex. Secondly if as you point out parking would be at ground level there still is'nt enough room for 232 cars. Across the street is not only Tilcon facility, beyond that would be the land for the new train station, there is an active business on the corner. the only thing thats empty or for sale are 2 small buildings. The town won't allow building on Harvey field, and the Portuguese community won't go for building on AJ Seabras property.

  16. Does anyone have any information regarding the current redevelopment projects? Has it been decided which business / houses will be taken via eminent domain? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I have'nt heard anything on property stealing on Schuyler ave. After all Eminent Domain is nothing more than stealing one persons property and giving it to a developer so he can get rich by turning the property in housing or commercial development. I think those on the west side of Schuyler Ave will be safe, it's those business's and homes on the east side that may eventually be taken for ReDevelopment. Take Russo development for example, they want to redevelop a 5 acre tract of land on the corner of schuyler and bergen aves. 2 buildings totaling 232 housing units. Where are they going to put parking for 232 - 464 cars. They can't go underground water table is to high, the obvious choice is to eminent domain buildings across the street to build parking.

  17. do you guys know if khs is going to have uniforms for this year

According to a friends son, KHS students will be donning the latest in school uniforms come september.

  18. Don't count on the grand jury. They get one side of the story, from the prosecutor. There's a saying that a good prosecutor can indict a ham sandwich.

You need a lawyer. He'll do the pretrial talks with the prosecutors and both sides will be heard is done during the trial or during pretrial intervention. Let your lawyer do the talking.

Assuming you told the truth, the judge should not have said what he said about not having a lawyer. That's grounds for complaint to the Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct (609) 292-2552. Correspondence, including complaints, should be addressed to the Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct, CN-037, Trenton, NJ 08625.

More info (its from Essex court site but it should apply to all NJ courtsJ)

The defense can also testify before the grand jury, The boy could have told his side there, only at that point the prosecuter gets to ask questions of him also. I don't believe the original poster has told the whole story. first being she would not have gotten a " Letter and police report in the mail" her son would have gotten a subpeona in the mail. Secondly he would have been summoned to appear before the Hudson County Superior Court Juveniel (sp?) division. Not adult court, the police report would have been obtained at the KPD. From her own story she did not hire a lawyer at the time but rather went to court with her son in an atempt to plead with the judge to see things her way,the judge was well within his rights to threaten her with contempt of court.

  19. I have had a very bad experience happen to my teenage son a few months back, and was curious to see if any other parent with a teen may have been a victim of the Kearny Police. It seems that the towns police do not need any type of something called PROOF, before they go ahead and file a false police report against your kid. I will give you my personal example, and, if I am the only one, then I will be my personal battle. If I am not the only person who believes that their kid has been threatened, arrested, tried and convicted by the police department, please post your own story. If we get enough complaints, we can possibly do something to help our children.

My son was asked by a neighbor if he would walk her girlfriends house because it was dark, and, lets be honest, this town is not what it once was. While walking down the street, a new program us taxpayers fund called Vice unit, approached the two of them. The officer stopped them and they were both searched. I would also like to mention the officer was very free with his hands on my kid, which upset me very much. They proceeded to put my kid in hand cuffs and take him to the police station. My son did not have anything in his pockets except the five dollars I gave him earlier that evening. I got a call from the police department and was told that my son was being held and for me to come pick him up. I arrived at the police station and was informed that the girl he was walking with was indeed in possession of marijuana, which was hidden in her bra. I was also assured that they did not find any thing on my son and he was free to go.

I got a letter from the superior court of hudson county a few weeks later with a police report stating that he was being charged with possession of marijuana? I tried to phone the police and inform them of the mistake, and what a mistake that was. I was passed from desk to desk, I heard a few giggles from these so called professionals as they transferre my call to about six different extentions, cute. I finally was given an answering machine and left a message informing them that they made a mistake on the police report, Never got a call back. I called a dozen more times and got the same treatment.

I took a day off work and went to the court house in Jersey City to explain to them the mistake, but, alas, I was told to get a lawyer? Why would anyone go and hire a lawyer if they did not do anything wrong? I was told by an extremely rude judge that if I did not get a lawyer, he would simply pass judgement on him and 99% of the cases he hears end in guilty. I tried again to please explain to me why my kid was being charged with a crime he did not do, and, was promptly told that if I spoke again in his court room, I would be held in contempt of court. As it slowly dawned on me that it did not matter if the kid was innocent, he had already been convicted by the Kearny Police. I have been trying to figure out if it is a crime to be "guilty by association"? I have no other choice but to scrape the money together to hire a lawyer. In the mean time, the girl who was in possession of the marijuana was arrested and charged, as should be. Am I crazy, but, could it be that two kids lives will be turned upside down because the police will now have two people charged for same exact crime just because they have quotas to justify their rather large pay checks?

I have been hearing some parents complain of the same problem, but, are too afraid to speak out of fear. Has anyone else experienced the Kearny Police false reports? If so, please reply to this posting.

The more I read what you have wrote the more it appears how emotional you are, once your son has been charged and the prosecuter gets the case the KPD is basically out of it. Until he's called to court to testify. It's your job to get a lawyer to represent your son, the judge was right in threating you with contempt of court, the judge does'nt want to hear what YOU have to say. Thats what lawyers are for they know when to speak and when not to speak. As for the KPD " putting thier hands on your son" it's called a search aka the pat down they where well within their rights at that point. I would'nt be as mad at the KPD as I would be at the " Neighbor" it would seem he/she set your son up. Some things you left out of your rant. 1. Was your son out after curfew?, 2. is your son the girl known to the KPD?,3. has your son ever hung out with this girl or neighbor before. If this girl was known to the KPD as many teenagers in Kearny are, your son very well could have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. What did the girl your son was arrested with tell the KPD, she very well may have told them the Marijuana belonged to your son. In short get yourself a lawyer and don't blame the KPD they just did their job.

  20. Guess what, many parents aren't doing their jobs.

I agree with 100%. It's apparent that most parents in the town of Kearny don't give a rats ass how their kid is dressed when going to school (KHS). Is there any reason why I've seen personally girls going to KHS wearing shorts so short that the cheeks of their ass are hanging out or miniskirts so short they should have shaved and I don't mean their legs before heading to KHS. Talk about a distraction if parents want to let this go on, then they should have no problem with the labels of " Whore, or Slut ". As a Kearny taxpayer I feel that since I don't have kids in the Kearny school system I should'nt have to support your or your kids decision to dress as they want, My tax dollars are being used by your kids in KHS so in and for that I WANT UNIFORMS OR A STRICT DRESS CODE. Play by the rules, you go to school your not dressed properly you get sent home, you don't make 180 days of classroom time a year you don't advance / graduate. End of story plain and simple.

  21. Everybody get used to "President McCain" because he's going to beat the flip-flopping, back-peddling Obama. The radical left loonies are

angry over Obama backing off an immediate withdrawal of troops, Hillary backers are refusing to support Obama and questioning the importance

of McCain's military service is costing him the vote of retired military families.

The loony left polls of course continue to have Obama ahead, but the accurate polls have McCain ahead in the key areas. Also, a Defeatocrat

with a tax and spend agenda cannot win in a time of high gas prices and slipping economy.

So, all you Kool-Aid sipping leftist loonies start getting used to another 4 years of Republican leadership, I don't want to see mass suicides in Nov.

McCain's got my vote, there's no way in hell I'm voting for a lawn jockey and his Ghetto rat wife for president. Mark my words if and thats a big if should obama win I'll lay odds the ghetto rat gives him a fist bump after being sworn in. Obama will fail as president worse than Bush ever could. Obama will pull the troops out of Iraq and the government there will crash.

nice sentiment only " Vets" field is'nt owned by the town of Kearny. It's leased by the town from the department of Veterans affairs NJ.

  23. Yesterday on my way to work, I noticed the empty site at Schulyer & Quincy Ave's, anyway, that would have made a great recreation area for our families here in Kearny. Remember Kearny Pool? well, the area could hold an olympic size pool, with a sunbathing area, picnic tables and play areas, also restrooms and a concession stand. Why not! It would only be for Kearny Residents who provide a valid address with paid rental slips or mortgage info, and the yearly badges could be sent to the home. To enter you would have to provide a badge and a current photo ID, I know it sounds a little crazy, buit it would help out with some of the tax burden, by collecting money for the season badges ( maybe $200-$300 per year) depending on income or something like that, the concession stand could bring in revenue also, what do you think?

I like the idea but think it's to costly a venture. The hazardous soil remediation could cost several million dollars, add to that the site would have to be raised to street level. Left at the elevation that it is now the pool would have to be drained after each rain storm and refilled. Being that close to the meadow's would create a critter problem. And the liability insurance oy vey would cost the town a million + yearly. I like the idea but cost wise is'nt feasible.

  24. Wednesday morning when I was leaving for work, I did my usual walk around my wifes car. I noticed the window frame just above the drivers door handle had been tampered with. The amatures tried to pry open the molding with a screw driver in an attempt to enter the car to release the Gas tank fill door. I had the KPD down at the house to look at the car and was informed by the officer that this is becoming a frequent problem in town. The officer further informed me that in some cases the thieves are trying to pry the gas doors open. Some of the morons even think they PSE&G gas caps in the sidewalk contain gas the vehicle kind, the officer told us that about 2 dozen caps have been popped around town and in some cases the siphon hoses were still there. Is this what we've become as a society, when we can't afford gas we steal it?
