Guest 2smart4u
Morons like you are the ones who have all but destroyed the middle class. You buy the right wing narrative, and elect right wingers. In turn, they make sure the middle class gets squashed, and a few extremely rich people make all the gains while the middle class continues to stagnate, year after year and decade after decade. And you're too stupid to understand what's happening. So you call one of our better presidents names, failing to notice that if Congress had done what he asked it to do, we wouldn't have these problems. Our health care system doesn't work very well, but it's better now than it was before Obamacare. More people are insured, and the rate of cost increases has fallen dramatically. Don't blame President Obama for a sick system that he made better. The solution isn't to pit the middle class against itself; the solution is to recognize that the problem comes from the super-rich having too much wealth and power. When the economy collapses, the biggest banks and the biggest companies get bailed out, and the middle class gets the shaft. Don't know about you but I'm tired of paying Mitt Romney's taxes. Politically, you're the problem, because you're too stupid to see what's going on right in front of your face. That's right, you. How's everything in Oz, how's the weather. Guest Kearny Citizen
Cranky *KPDRetired*? You jumped all over the amount you claim the Firefighters pay towards their healthcare but the $100,000 a year Firefighter salary didn't make you blink. Somebody who agrees that paying $100,000/year and higher of hard earned Kearny taxpayer dollars to UNPRODUCTIVE FIREFIGHTERS who SLEEP FOR A LIVING less than 2 days a week is mentally disturbed. I guess the Police didn't have psychological exams back in the 60's. The median wage of the residents of Kearny is half that amount (or less), the people work at least 5 days a week and I bet they don't pack a pillow and blanket to go to work. Eight new lazy bags of sh*t were hired to join the unconscious few at the Frat House. Some Hudson County's political hack parents or relatives must be happy that their uneducated loser kid or brother hit the rigged 25 year Kearny Firefighter job lottery. I'm sure all or most of them are WHITE MALES. Whatta racket!
Guest Guest
The fact that you start off by calling me a Moron and to follow it up with stupid shows your level of intelligence. Carry on LOL No, you just don't want to think about it. The American people have been propagandized into a stupor by the people who control them, and are voting not only for the control to continue but for it to escalate. Stupid and uninformed people are destroying our future and our children's future. They would rather be entertained than informed. Instead of looking at the real problem, they want to wage war against people who are in the same boat they are in. Meanwhile, a few extremely wealthy people keep raking in the money, amassing obscene fortunes they didn't come close to earning, and preventing meaningful action on virtually every main issue we face. The game is rigged, the people keep handing power to the people who are rigging it, and if you don't see that, then you are a moron.

Guest guest
Why are we talking about fireman on this topic. The teacher's contract is the topic. What is going on with the teachers? Are both parties still not talking? Their contract is three years 2014-2016. What happens when they settle? Is their raise retroactive? What was the last offer? Too many questions need answers. Does anyone know?
Guest School Watch
The fact is that the teachers are on the short end of the stick and they will be forced to givebacks and the Union Leadership will need to regroup and change the top from the President on down. The Board will get what they want with this contract and teachers will just have to live with it. Keep supporting these members in their elections as you continue to be baited into listening to empty promises. There was a saying on President Nixon's desk that said " When you have them by the Balls there hearts and minds will follow" That's fitting for what this Union will end up settling for soon. Actually, the current contract died in June, 2014 - the next contract will be retroactive from June 2014 through June 2017 - only one year and some months left on the current "no contract." In the past, raises have been retroactive, but the skuttlebut is that there will be no retro this time. This past week their was a "friendly" meeting between KEA officers and the BOE - no word on what happened at that meeting. Guest Kearny Citizen
The Teachers should NOT accept an unfavorable contract. The Firefighters are part-time manual laborers with imbicile level educational requirements. The Firefighter BASE top pay is $119,800/year. Overtime paid in 24 hour shifts can push that to $150,000/year. Adding $25,000 for the rank of Captain, Batt. Chief, D/C or Chief makes it around $175,000/year. Also, Firefighters are given generous yearly raises and are granted generous retro pay when a new contract is reached. It's extremely excessive pay for guys who sleep, cook and watch TV at multi-million dollar clubhouses 1 or 2 days a week. I doubt that many or any Kearny taxpayers receive this easy 25 year municipal welfare gift. Do the educated professional Teachers make close to that amount and receive equal raises? Are the Teachers guaranteed retro pay in the new contract? Teachers work 5 days a week, sometimes 6, and spend considerable personal time volunteer hours helping students. The Firefighter perks are endless while the Teachers get none. This perverse distortion of pay and resources needs to be addressed as its clear that the Teachers deserve better treatment. STRIKE IF YOU MUST AND DEMAND THAT SAME $119,800 OR BETTER! THE TEACHERS DESERVE IT!!

Guest Careful What You Wish For
If the Board is not forced to pay retroactive pay, what incentive is there for them to EVER to settle??? The whole point behind the Taylor Laws, that Prohibit Police, Fire, Municipal and Educational Labor Unions from Striking was based on the fact that time worked without a contract would be settled through Retroactive pay. If they take Retro off the table, it might end up bringing strikes back. When it goes to Court, all they have to do is show that the Town/BOE Violated the Taylor Statutes FIRST. Then again, This IS NJ After all, where the Courts make their rulings more by Politics than Caselaw or the State Constitution.

Now another "generous" raise, really!

And what they will be making at the end of their contract? Look at the Kearny Schools website. Click on 2015-2016 budget. Scroll down and you will come upon the secretary "executive assistant" (what a joke) and her "G.L." salary is $86,000.00, ($3,340.00 Bonus) employee benefit package of $30,715 and 39 days she can take off. Now at the last BOE meeting she was just given an 8.5% raise which now puts her at almost $100,000.00 !! Yes, the BOE has a $100K "secretary" and a $30K benefit on top of that..........but the Board has no money to pay college graduates, some holding masters degrees , hard working educators, go figure. The hell with our kids just keep funding our friends.

It's 8.5% over 3 years. So if everyone else is getting 8.5% then what are the teachers holding out for?

Guest Guest
If you receive 0% raise in the first year, there would be no retro. True, but if they AGREE to that, then it's covered. Once it is imposed, than that Slippery slope is created. With the Teachers, they'll just do what they always do, screw over the new and unborn, by adding steps to new hires.... eventually it will get to the point where if you don't start teaching the day you graduate from college, you'll never reach top pay before you are forced out by mandatory retirement.
