Two wrongs do not make a right. I don't believe in legacy seats just as I don't believe in minority quotas. Either is wrong. Giving preferment to some may cause discrimination against others.

Of course the legacy seats have a very strong argument. Take our legacy "booboo" in and we'll give your school enough money to create 20 new seats. So a legacy preferment may not cause others to be denied. Unlike a minority preferment, which will use up a seat, causing someone with higher grades to be denied. That really goes against the belief that we should be a merit based society.

The fact is people of color (Asians usually excluded) are accepted with lower scores than their non-color compatriots. Colleges adjust the SAT "cutoff" level for people of color. This is to handle the 200 point disparity between blacks and whites.

The racial scoring gap on the SAT test has now become wider than has been the case for the past two decades. Many believe that in the years to come the gap may grow smaller, not because blacks are catching up to whites in educational achievement, but rather because the test makers are adding a writing component to the test that may be manipulated to lessen racial differences and therefore reduce public criticisms of the test.

Next, before you get your panties in a twist and go off on people who just may know at least as much or more than you do, you might take some time to school yourself in the devious art of insinuation. When you write "Would you be surprised if I told you her score was 550 Reading and 420 Math?", most people will interpret that as an insinuation that those were her scores. You may not have meant that, but you can hardly blame people for thinking that you did, especially when the political party you support uses similar techniques against its opponents. It's called push polling.

You may or may not like it, but we live in a deeply divided country. There are red state people and blue state people, and the two groups really don't like each other very much. This causes suspicion, which makes misinterpretation quite likely when these subjects are discussed. You might want to take that into account next time before you presume to call people stupid.

At the end of the day the only preference that should be given should be based, almost entirely, on merit. To give preference on someone's "station" in life, as it were is wrong and amounts to social engineering. As is a preference based on race; any preference given to one race (choose your own) amounts to a prejudice.

People always credit Martin Luther King Jr's. "I Have a Dream" speech.
