Co-Workers: Obama Inflated His Resume

It has been noted by Charles Krauthammer and others that very few people have stepped forward to vouch for Barack Obama.

Indeed, there would seem to be an especially conspicuous absence of witnesses to the years after graduated from Columbia and before he moved to Chicago to work as a community organizer.

Well, it turns out that one of his co-workers has in fact written about Mr. Obama during those days. And while he is an admitted fan of Obama’s, he claims that he has inflated his resume considerably.

Others who worked with Obama at Business International have subsequently chimed in.

First, Mr. Obama’s version as presented in from Dreams From My Father, pp 55-6:

CHAPTER SEVEN

… And so, in the months leading up to graduation, I wrote to every civil rights organization I could think of, to any black elected official in the country with a progressive agenda, to neighborhood councils and tenant rights groups. When no one wrote back, I wasn’t discouraged. I decided to find more conventional work for a year, to pay off my student loans and maybe even save a little bit. I would need the money later, I told myself. Organizers didn’t make any money; their poverty was proof of their integrity.

Eventually a consulting house to multinational corporations agreed to hire me as a research assistant. Like a spy behind enemy lines, I arrived every day at my mid-Manhattan office and sat at my computer terminal, checking the Reuters machine that blinked bright emerald messages from across the globe. As far as I could tell I was the only black man in the company, a source of shame for me but a source of considerable pride for the company’s secretarial pool. They treated me like a son, those black ladies; they told me how they expected me to run the company one day…

Nevertheless, as the months passed, I felt the idea of becoming an organizer slipping away from me. The company promoted me to the position of financial writer. I had my own office, my own secretary, money in the bank. Sometimes, coming out of an interview with Japanese financiers or German bond traders, I would catch my reflection in the elevator doors-see myself in a suit and tie, a briefcase in my hand-and for a split second I would imagine myself as a captain of industry, barking out orders, closing the deal, before I remembered who it was that I had told myself I wanted to be and felt pangs of guilt for my lack of resolve.

Then one day, as I sat down at my computer to write an article on interest-rate swaps, something unexpected happened. Auma called. I had never met this half sister; we had written only intermittently…

[A] few months after Auma called, I turned in my resignation at the consulting firm and began looking in earnest for an organizing job…

We are supposed to believe that “something happened” and the rest is history.

Here, however, is a somewhat different perspective on Obama’s halcyon days as a “spy behind enemy lines,” from a site called Analyze This:

Barack Obama Embellishes His Resume

July 9th, 2005

Dan Armstrong

Don’t get me wrong - I’m a big fan of Barack Obama, the Illinois freshman senator and hot young Democratic Party star. But after reading his autobiography, I have to say that Barack engages in some serious exaggeration when he describes a job that he held in the mid-1980s. I know because I sat down the hall from him, in the same department, and worked closely with his boss. I can’t say I was particularly close to Barack - he was reserved and distant towards all of his co-workers - but I was probably as close to him as anyone. I certainly know what he did there, and it bears only a loose resemblance to what he wrote in his book.

Here’s Barack’s account:

Eventually a consulting house to multinational corporations agreed to hire me as a research assistant. Like a spy behind enemy lines, I arrived every day at my mid-Manhattan office and sat at my computer terminal, checking the Reuters machine that blinked bright emerald messages from across the globe. As far as I could tell I was the only black man in the company, a source of shame for me but a source of considerable pride for the company’s secretarial pool.

First, it wasn’t a consulting house; it was a small company that published newsletters on international business. Like most newsletter publishers, it was a bit of a sweatshop. I’m sure we all wished that we were high-priced consultants to multinational corporations. But we also enjoyed coming in at ten, wearing jeans to work, flirting with our co-workers, partying when we stayed late, and bonding over the low salaries and heavy workload.

Barack worked on one of the company’s reference publications. Each month customers got a new set of pages on business conditions in a particular country, punched to fit into a three-ring binder. Barack’s job was to get copy from the country correspondents and edit it so that it fit into a standard outline. There was probably some research involved as well, since correspondents usually don’t send exactly what you ask for, and you can’t always decipher their copy. But essentially the job was copyediting.

It’s also not true that Barack was the only black man in the company. He was the only black professional man. Fred was an African-American who worked in the mailroom with his son. My boss and I used to join them on Friday afternoons to drink beer behind the stacks of office supplies. That’s not the kind of thing that Barack would do. Like I said, he was somewhat aloof.

… as the months passed, I felt the idea of becoming an organizer slipping away from me. The company promoted me to the position of financial writer. I had my own office, my own secretary; money in the bank. Sometimes, coming out of an interview with Japanese financiers or German bond traders, I would catch my reflection in the elevator doors—see myself in a suit and tie, a briefcase in my hand—and for a split second I would imagine myself as a captain of industry, barking out orders, closing the deal, before I remembered who it was that I had told myself I wanted to be and felt pangs of guilt for my lack of resolve.

If Barack was promoted, his new job responsibilities were more of the same - rewriting other people’s copy. As far as I know, he always had a small office, and the idea that he had a secretary is laughable. Only the company president had a secretary. Barack never left the office, never wore a tie, and had neither reason nor opportunity to interview Japanese financiers or German bond traders.

Then one day, as I sat down at my computer to write an article on interest-rate swaps, something unexpected happened…. I had never met this half sister; we had written only intermittently. …[several pages on his suffering half-sister] …a few months after Auma called, I turned in my resignation at the consulting firm and began looking in earnest for an organizing job.

What Barack means here is that he got copy from a correspondent who didn’t understand interest rate swaps, and he was trying to make sense out of it.

All of Barack’s embellishment serves a larger narrative purpose: to retell the story of the Christ’s temptation. The young, idealistic, would-be community organizer gets a nice suit, joins a consulting house, starts hanging out with investment bankers, and barely escapes moving into the big mansion with the white folks. Luckily, an angel calls, awakens his conscience, and helps him choose instead to fight for the people.

Like I said, I’m a fan. His famous keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention moved me to tears. The Democrats - not to mention America - need a mixed-race spokesperson who can connect to both urban blacks and rural whites, who has the credibility to challenge the status quo on issues ranging from misogynistic rap to unfair school funding.

And yet I’m disappointed. Barack’s story may be true, but many of the facts are not. His larger narrative purpose requires him to embellish his role. I don’t buy it. Just as I can’t be inspired by Steve Jobs now that I know how dishonest he is, I can’t listen uncritically to Barack Obama now that I know he’s willing to bend the facts to his purpose.

Once, when I applied for a marketing job at a big accounting firm, my then-supervisor called HR to say that I had exaggerated something on my resume. I didn’t agree, but I also didn’t get the job. But when Barack Obama invents facts in a book ranked No. 8 on the NY Times nonfiction list, it not only fails to be noticed but it helps elevate him into the national political pantheon.

By the way, there should be no doubt as to Mr. Armstrong’s bona fides on this subject. Even the New York Times has cited him as an authority for an article on this period of Mr. Obama’s storied life.

Bern, your attempted smear of the next President of the United States is pitiful and pathetic. Boil down all the irrelevancies and you're left with the following accusations by one person who has his own point of view but nothing more:

Not even a good try, Bern. Just a cheap attack on our next President, whom you obviously don't like.

Oh ... and here is something else Mr. Armstrong wrote in the same blog ..."Now that the Dutch have adopted rules for euthanizing babies, I hope they'll apply them sensibly. It's so annoying when those babies start crying in the airplane cabin. You can't exactly get up and leave the room. I also don't like it when two-year-olds sit in the handicapped seats on the subway. They claim that they can't read the sign, but I don't buy that for a minute.'

Yeah, he has his head screwed on tight. Sure.

Facts, facts, facts. If that's all you have, the Loonys will give him a pass. You know the Obamaniacs don't do well with facts, they prefer distortions, innuendo, rumors and of course lies.

Thanks, but we didn't need an acknowledgement that McCain and Palin, who have been lying through their two sets of teeth, have a huge credibility problem.

Oh, and the sweet thing is, they have only themselves to blame.

I love it when liars get caught, don't you?

But it's good to know that you're waking up to the fact that your lying scumbag candidates, McCain and Palin, are going down.

Since this came out I've haven't seen anyone from that company supporting Obama's assertions or decrying Armstrong's statement.

Armstrong has not been shown to be a liar, unlike the duplicitous and very political Obama

Sometimes Obama has come late to the game. He did not stop taking rides on subsidized corporate jets until the week he was tapped to be the Democrats' chief spokesman on ethics in January 2006. In 2005, Obama took 23 such private aircraft flights, some to attend fund-raisers he headlined. In 2006, Obama led the fight to ban lawmakers from taking cut-rate private air travel.

You obviously haven't been paying attention to the polls. There are now 2 more red states and 2 fewer blue states than there were last week. Obama's lead in NY is down to 4 points from 12 points last week (where a dem should be up by 20). McCain has taken over the lead in Mich., Ohio and Colorado. And McCain is now up by 20 Electoral points. Most importantly, the trends are up for McCain and down for Obama. And if Biden continues with his "words of wisdom"; "Obama should have picked Hillary, she's more qualified than me", McCain may make this election a clean sweep.

My advice to the Loony's is this: get a prescription of Valium from your doctors, by Nov. you guys are going to need sedation.

More importantly, the tide has turned back to Obama with the stories about McCain's lying and Palin's lack of qualifications. The recent economic news isn't going to help McCain.

You let us know when President Guiliani is sworn in.

Actually, the latest national poll shows Obama up by 4. McCain's numbers are starting to drop and probably will continue to do so. It's a tragedy that he has done so much to ruin the fine reputation he once had.

You're kidding right, you're now down to insinuating Barack Obama misrepresented the TWO years from 1983 to 1985? You folks are desperate! Here are the cold facts:

1983, Graduates from Columbia University in New York

1984, Works at Business International Corp in New York

1985, Works at the NY Public Interest Research Group in New York

1985-88, works as a community organizer in Chicago

1988-91, attends and graduates from Harvard Law School while become president of the Harvard Law Review

1992-2004, Lecturer at the Univ. of Chicago Law School

1997-2004, State Senator in the Illinois Legislature

Nov. 2004, Elected U.S. Senator

There's no gap in Obama's resume. I think you got confused with George W. Bush's resume; after Bush graduated from Yale University in 1968 and before he was arrested for DUI in Maine in 1976, there's a very unclear 8 year gap. What was he doing during those 8 years? By the way, we're still waiting for records that would corroborate his service in the Texas Air National Guard during that period.

Here's how Obama did it

New evidence has emerged that Democratic presidential candidateBarack Obama was closely associated as early as age 25 to a key adviser to a Saudi billionaire who had mentored the founding members of the Black Panthers.

By: Kenneth R. Timmerman WorthyNews.com 9-3-8

In a videotaped interview this year on New York’s all news cable channel NY1, a prominent African-American businessman and political figure made the curious disclosures about Obama. (See Video Clip Below)

Percy Sutton, the former borough president of Manhattan, off-handedly revealed the unusual circumstances about his first encounter with the young Obama.

“I was introduced to (Obama) by a friend who was raising money for him,” Sutton told NY1 city hall reporter Dominic Carter.

“The friend’s name is Dr. Khalid al-Mansour, from Texas,” Sutton said. “He is the principal adviser to one of the world’s richest men. He told me about Obama.”

Sutton, the founder of Inner City Broadcasting, said al-Mansour contacted him to ask a favor: Would Sutton write a letter in support of Obama’s application to Harvard Law School?

“He wrote to me about him,” Sutton recalled. “And his introduction was there is a young man that has applied to Harvard. I know that you have a few friends up there because you used to go up there to speak. Would you please write a letter in support of him?”

Sutton said he acted on his friend al-Mansour’s advice.

“I wrote a letter of support of him to my friends at Harvard, saying to them I thought there was a genius that was going to be available and I certainly hoped they would treat him kindly,” Sutton told NY1.

Sutton did not say why al-Mansour was helping Obama, how he discovered him, or from whom he was raising money on Obama’s behalf.

I agree with your first comment on Bush; it would explain why a C average student got into Harvard Business School and would also explain his "missing years" in the Texas Air National Guard Reserve.

As to Saudi billionaires, again you confuse Obama and Bush. It was the royal House of Saud and George Bush I who made their "holy alliance" to protect America's oil supply and to fight the first Persian Gulf War. And, it was just three months ago that George Bush II and the Saudi Crown Prince walked literally shoulder to shoulder in Saudia Arabia, reaffirming their alliance. It was the House of Saud that funded a good portion of the Bush I Presidential Museum. Guess who's going to raise money for the Bush II Museum?

By the way, becoming a member of a Law Review, which is the top legal publication at a law school, is based on GRADES and WRITING sample that are scored anonymously. Just 5% of law school students qualify. Becoming president of the Law Review means you survived your first year editing endless footnotes in articles by law professors and the majority of your peers on the Law Review VOTE for you. Now consider that Harvard is the top law school in the country and, with Yale, the most competitive. Those are cold facts -- Obama's academic resume is impressive.

Here's some more on your "reformer" from Real Clear Politics

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/...rm_in_illi.html

Obama Sidesteps Reform in Illinois

By Dennis Byrne

For those of you who still cling to the fantasy that Barack Obama is "about change," you should note how he, or his minions, want nothing to do with reforming politics in Illinois, perhaps the most corrupt state in the Union.

"Throughout his political career, Barack Obama has fought for open and honest government," proclaims his campaign Web site. Apparently, no longer. When the Democratic presidential candidate--now his party's industrial-strength voice for our deliverance from political corruption everywhere--was asked by a reformer if he would help get his political mentor back home to get off the dime and move the most minimal of state ethics legislation toward passage, the Obama campaign sent word back that amounted to a "no."

State Sen. Emil Jones (D-Chicago) is the Chicago machine politician who might have been most instrumental in jump-starting Obama's political career. Now, as Illinois Senate president, Jones is the one sitting on the reform legislation, refusing to call it for an expected favorable vote before it officially dies of neglect.

Jones is the pal of Gov. Rod Blagojevich, no friend of reform, who used his amendatory veto power to change the legislation after it passed both houses so that Jones would get another chance to kill it.

If all that's confusing, welcome to Illinois politics, where intricacy is the best camouflage for chicanery. Suffice to say, neither Blagojevich nor Jones is working for reform.

So, along comes Cindi Canary, director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, thinking that now might be a good time for Obama to parlay his friendship with Jones to do a good deed: Won't you intervene with Jones and try to get him to call the Senate back into session to get this law passed? "[T]his is a place [Obama] could come in and quickly clean up some of the damage and serve his state," she told the Chicago Sun-Times. After all, her group and Obama worked together during those halcyon days when he actually supported reform in Illinois, so maybe he'll be receptive to a plea to intervene on behalf of Illinois folks who have been getting gouged for years by the likes of Jones. "A 30-second phone call to the Illinois Senate president could yield huge dividends to this state," she said.

In response, Obama's campaign issued an oozy statement reaffirming Obama's alleged commitment to reform, while getting no more specific than urging everyone to get together and love one another right now. What Canary was asking Obama for wasn't all that much. Maybe a 30-second phone call to back up his usual pap of, "Look, ah, I've, ah, always been for, ah, reform." For most people, the reform that we're talking about is so basic that they might ask, "You mean it's not illegal already?"

The legislation would make illegal the widespread abuse called pay-to-play politics, by which companies doing business with the state contribute to the state official in charge of ladling out contracts. The new law wouldn't let you do it if you have more than $50,000 in state contracts, which, even at that, leaves open a nice loophole. In Illinois, this is a huge leap forward from how things are done. Blagojevich, who has reaped bundles of cash from state contractors, could be one of the pols most jolted by the prohibition. That explains why he rewrote the legislation in a way that would make it ineffective and why the House overwhelmingly rejected his changes.

Jones now is the only one standing in the way of the reform, with Obama abetting.

Here's another example of how Obama has revealed himself to be a creature of the Chicago machine. Who can forget his silence when he could have affirmed his reformer credentials by endorsing Democrat Forrest Claypool over machine creature Todd Stroger as Cook County Board president? When things got too hot, Obama severed his ties from his racially inflammatory pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. That's not too hard; you can always find another pastor.

But betraying your political godfather(s) in Chicago and Illinois is an entirely different matter. Especially if you lose the presidential election and return to being just another senator from Illinois. Cutting his ties with the corrupt Chicago machine is one bridge you will not see Obama burn. Not now, not ever.

Agent of change, my foot.

I'm sure Barack and his loving America wife both got into college and law school because they're black. The liberal universities they both attended allowed them entry over more qualified students. Did Michelle appreciate this free pass into college and love America for it ? Nah. She didn't even give that a thought until she was in her 40's.

So let me get this straight. This has nothing to do with what Obama did while he was an Illinois state Senator. You admit he exhibited a record of reform.

But since you're hell-bent on not accepting the facts, you insist that if he doesn't get himself in the middle of something over which he no longer has any jurisdiction, that means he's not a reformer any more. You expect him, in the middle of perhaps the most important presidential race of this generation, to get involved in a matter that is properly handled by the Illinois state legislature.

Since you obviously don't understand how these things work, I'll explain it to you. Federal legislators do not typically stick their noses into the business of their state legislatures. In the case of someone who is very likely to be president in a few months, this would be seen as over-reaching and inappropriate. And if he did it, you'd be criticizing him for sticking his nose where it didn't belong. The elected Illinois state legislature is supposed to address these issues. That's what they're elected for.

You've lost your grip on reality, Bern.

You couldn't find the link? You couldn't find the You Tube video where Percy Sutton imparted his information? I can see why you are an Obamite - you have no analytical skills.

It's your smear. You have the burden to prove that your sources are credible, the information is accurate and that it is germane.

I'm sure Barack and his loving America wife both got into college and law school because they're black. The liberal universities they both attended allowed them entry over more qualified students. Did Michelle appreciate this free pass into college and love America for it ? Nah. She didn't even give that a thought until she was in her 40's.

Look up Michelle's Master's thesis she wrote at Princeton, it was about Princeton's "White Culture". That speaks volumes about what dances around Michelle's head. It's easy to understand Michelle's comments about not being proud to be an American.

Can't accept that a Black woman had higher SAT's and grades than you, can you? Or that a Black man became President of the Harvard Law Review (literally, en elite within an elite) based entirely on grades and a writing sample? Why are you so threatened by successful African Americans that you immediately resort to race to account for their accomplishments?

Speaking of affirmative action, how do you think George Bush II got admitted to Yale University? And with a C average got admitted to Harvard Business School?? The irony of all this is that our leaders who have benefited from affirmative action are mostly White legacies (see also Dan Quayle, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, John McCain, etc.)

No it doesn't. It speaks to her awareness of where she was and how she had a perspective on white culture that we white folks can't have. We white folks have never had a problem writing about black culture.

What does her awareness have to do with not being proud to be an American for the first 40-odd years of her life ? Here's a woman who gets a free ride to Princeton and Harvard because she's black and that doesn't make her proud to be an American?? And you want this unpatriotic B**ch to become First Lady???
