  1. Paul has yet to unequivocally describe the "secular world view" that supposedly won out when the Framers developed the Declaration of independence.

Since that was the point of the thread, I'll summarize Paul's participation thus far and reiterate the request that Paul reveal what is meant by "secular world view."

I didn't say deism is a secular world view. I merely corrected a comment about the religious beliefs of our Constitution's framers.

There was, however, a divide at the time of the Constitutional Convention between those who wanted to adopt an explicitly religious (theistic) Constitution and those who believed it best to separate church and state. The separatist view prevailed. That much is history. Slowly over time, incursions were made. "In God We Trust" on money, "under God" in the pledge, etc. However, the fact remains that under our laws the First Amendment coupled with the Fourteenth require religious neutrality by government.

    http://forums.kearnyontheweb.com/index.php...indpost&p=51712

Paul's initial comment to the thread accentuated his confused view of the origins of the United States (In God We Trust" is an incursion; judicial expansion of the 14th Amendment apparently not an incursion).

He talks about a "separatist" view that prevailed but stops short of saying that the separatist view is the "secular world view" to which he alluded.

No clear answer to the question as yet.

Paul's next post to the thread was ... off topic.

This is really an excellent point, one too few people pay attention to. God is what is ultimately real, not the symbols and images people call God. I think you're absolutely correct, Guest. Much of what passes for religion is instead idolatry.

    http://forums.kearnyontheweb.com/index.php...indpost&p=52239

Paul appeared to take credit for this post by "Guest," which  comes pretty close to defining "secular world view"

The beauty of a truly religious Humanism is that there is no separation between life and religion. That is one of the reasons I believe it to be true. For me, religion is what I do every moment of my life, and if I do it right it permeates me and lifts me up and makes me a better person.

Secularism and theism are categories, but no one I've ever met or heard of is a pure theist. So while theism has a long history of many adherents, those same people also compromised their theism in many ways, some more than others. I've never met anyone who didn't, and I've met some mighty strong believers.

So with that explanation, a secular worldview is one that recognizes that whatever one believes about a god, an afterlife, etc., the realities of the world are what govern how we behave in the world and among each other. There are gradations of this, all the way from a grudging acceptance of worldly realities to explicit non-theism.

    http://forums.kearnyontheweb.com/index.php...indpost&p=52526

    <purple emphasis added>

    Is this explanation coherent?

If one is a theist or a deist, then isn't god one of the realities of the world?

Then Paul(?) reveals that, yes, deists and theists may possess a "secular world view" if they so much as exhibit a "grudging acceptance of worldly realities."

It seems to me that David Paszkiewicz qualifies as one with a "secular world view"--indeed, he seemed to grudgingly accept the worldly reality that getting fired from his job would result in hardship for his family.

Isn't this definition so broad as to be effectively meaningless?

    After another digression,

    http://forums.kearnyontheweb.com/index.php...indpost&p=52566

Paul picked up with his defense of himself as "Guest."

Quoting from that post would be nearly pointless, since the answers cannot be adequately appreciated outside the context of the points to which Paul responded.

In short, Paul failed to address the inadequacies of the definition he (as "Guest") offered.

I responded to Paul's most recent on-topic offering here.

Now it's for Paul to try to address the problems, if he's able.

    Geez! Give it a rest!

  2. Everyday there seem to be just a little more momentum in favor of impeachment for either Bush or Cheney. I can only hope this momentum keeps building. Actually it's a little disurbing that it has taken this long.

Unfortunately, public humilation for those involved is hardly just punishment for the mess we now enjoy. If and when the ongoing investigations reveal some of the profoundly serious lawbreaking alleged by this admistration then they should be sent to prison for a very long time. Not just because it would be deserved, but also to show future administrations that this type of behavior shall be dealt with severely.

  3. Thanks for your comments anonymous Guest.

When the majority of Christians stop voting like sheep for the blithering idiots, I'll reconsider my handle.  When blithering idiots like James Dobson have a say in who he likes for the Republican Nominations, and the millions who follow him gladly pull the lever just becuase the candidate happens to be a "Christian," we're in real trouble.

If those are the real Christians, the silent people who allow their religion to be taken over by those blitering idiots need to wake up and say something.

    Amen!

  4. So you concede my point on each of the criticisms, then?

    :)

Heh.  I've already answered this question.  I favor the United States federalist system that existed prior to the courts using the 14th Amendment to widely erode local autonomy from federal mandates.  That's the system the US operated under prior to the key court decisions.  If Paul doesn't like it then the grand success of the US that he claims for his own POV stretches maybe a century.

    Whoop-de-doo.

The real purpose of this thread is to allow Paul to distract from his inability to answer the criticisms I made.  Check it out--even though he apparently cannot address any of them he declares that I'm "not entirely wrong."

    What a guy!

    lol

    Bryan,

How often do you have to replace your keyboard? Please tell me, no, tell us all how things would be if you made all the rules. I look forward to your reading your undoubtedly smug response.

  5. Paul, what in the world is driving your mania being displayed on KOTW.  Have you ever taken a step back, taken a deep breath and reflected on this obsessive, repetative bloviation that you pump out on a maddening level ??

I got bored with the children babbling here and not making any sense, but you are enjoying every minute with these kids. It makes me question what kind of a life you lead, that this sillyness is such a big part of it.

I suppose you'll continue to have a few  morons who will consider you interesting but my guess is even they will drop off, until you find yourself posting and answering yourself.

It brings to mind the movie, The Shining, where we find Jack typing thousands of pages with the same line;  "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" .

Be careful, Paul..... remember how that movie ends.

and you are calling people morons?

  6. "A new poster named Foger has joined me" ???  LMAO.  A new dynamic duo has arrived on the scene, Mumbo and Dumbo.  "Indecently supine" ??? You have to be gay to write something like that.

    Wow Patriot,

I must say that I am impressed. Everytime I think that you couldn't possibly be more snide, childish and just plain mean you manage to surprise me. I suspect however that you would'nt have the guts to say these things to a persons face. Maybe you should let you 2 year-old post for you as I'm sure that they would show a greater level of maturity.

  7. Is this four-month long discussion finally at an end? Most of the discussion has been over an inane attempt to defend the indefensible conduct of a proselytizing zealot who was trying to shove his religious beliefs down the throats of other people's kids, uninvited. There have been some hot tempers on both sides, but by far the vast majority of the stupid and childish attacks have come from the side trying to defend the teacher. Their main line of attack, when it was obvious even to them that Paszkiewicz's conduct was indefensible, was to try to shift the discussion onto something else --- anything else, as long as they thought it shifted the focus. Because what these zealous fundies don't realize is that they're really trying to convince themselves, and to shield themselves from the world as it actually is. They can't live in a world of uncertainty, but the world is uncertain is many ways --- so they do what they think they have to do and make up a world that doesn't exist, a world where every moral choice is absolutely black and white and everything that doesn't fit into the little desktop mold they've made of the world is to be ignored and forgotten. "Please, please," they beg, "you must see things our way, you must!" because if anyone doesn't see it their way, they just might get a glimpse of the truth, and they don't want it.

Civilization has never advanced along the lines of these know-nothings, and it never will. Every age has seen its share of small-minded people, people without curiosity and without the humility and sense of wonder to realize that human beings came into the world knowing only a tiny part of the reality of all things, and that we learn more about reality by hard work, a little piece at a time --- not by declaring against all the evidence that the whole truth is written down in a collection of ancient writings that must never be questioned. We do not learn about reality by making up and closing our minds about it without even looking at the evidence all around us and thinking long and hard about what the evidence means. Every age has had its witch burners, its book burners and those who persecuted anyone who had an idea or acted in a way that threatened their comfort zone. The small-minded bigots who have posted in defense of their fellow small-minded bigot are no different. Invariably, their effort turns to hypocrisy and intellectual and moral dishonesty, as it has here. It's just the same thing in this place on a new day.

How fitting it is that this so-called "patriot" has nothing better and nothing more to say than a childish, four-word "gotcha" that a second-grader might utter on a school playground. In the end, that is all Paszkiewicz's defenders have to say.

For the rest of us, I hope we have learned something. I hope we have learned that citizenship means acting in defense of our country and its principles, both legal and ethical. I hope we have learned the value of taking a stand against wrongdoing when a person sees wrongdoing. This may have been a difficult time for Matthew LaClair and his family, but he and they will know all their lives that they did the right thing, something no other student was willing and able to do in the fifteen years that this abusive teacher has been at Kearny High. Many of Matthew's classmates will begin to realize this as they grow older. I hope they will have the courage and integrity to reach out to him and acknowledge their realization that he did the right thing while they remained silent, and that in a very real sense, although they did not realize it or would not admit it at the time, he spoke for them.

For the Kearny community, I hope this will be a lesson that will draw the community together by lifting it up to a higher moral ground. That remains to be seen. The fact that Paszkiewicz has been allowed to continue teaching without even being suspended is troubling. The obligation to ensure that our country's most fundamental law and the educational system are taken seriously rests with the Board of Education and the administrators throughout the Kearny school system. I hope they will rise to the challenge, but so far I see no evidence that they will.

So what do we do next?

Very well said indeed! It reminds me of a great movie I watched last night "Inherit the Wind".

  8. :excl: kearny you are just part of 1BIG SCAM! your best buddy paul p is just 1 small part of a huge scam by the american athists.inc ! they also are trying to put the screws to a small town in north FLA' 'STARK FLA HAD TO TAKE A CROSS THAT HAS BEEN ATOP A WATER TOWER FOR MANY YEARS OFF! A BOO BOO FOOL BY THE NAME OF LON BEVILL STARTED THE SAME KIND OF CRAP AS PAUL! this is "going on all over" paul is wanting to make points with this [org] the story is getting larger!  oh yes this story is printed in the bradford telegraph.com news paper in stark fla and yes you can read it on line :excl:  :excl:

Maybe it's time the Christians get a dose of thier own medicine.

  9. The point of this discussion seems to have been sidetracked. Is there a difference between faith as an action and faith as a belief? That's a good question with a great many answers, depending on what part of human life we may choose to focus on. The main point, as I see it, is that faith as a belief is mainly just wishful thinking, while faith as an action is how we change, grow, invent and become more than we were yesterday.

The relevance to the broader topic of the preacher-teacher is that many of his supporters seem to see faith mainly as a belief, unattached to anything that is real. That explains why they become so angry when their beliefs are challenged. Deep down they seem to realize that their own beliefs are not based on what is real, so they insist out of their own insecurity that everyone must believe as they do. It isn't just that they want to "save" people; they need the support system to maintain their illogical and unfounded beliefs. Predictably, they make illogical and unsupported connections between the events in their own lives and their belief systems. As one example, they insist that they owe their very existence to Jesus; there is no basis for that statement, and it isn't even part of their theology, but they are so desperate to insist that their faith is everything that they lose all perspective. That is one of the dangers in this kind of faith.

    Well said.

  10. Five questions:

    1. Many people believe in a god who can supposedly do anything. Annihilation would be vastly better than eternal torment, and would be within the power of an omnipotent god. (Leave aside the question why the children of a perfect god would ever turn against or disobey him. Did he create them in his image or not?) Assuming the existence of an omnipotent god, what kind of sick mind calls eternal torment "justice"?

    2. Why is the sickness not obvious to everyone?

    3. What effects does holding this sick belief have over a lifetime?

    4. What connection does this sickness have to the sickness in our societies and our world?

    5. Is it possible that fundamentalist Christians who believe literally that Satan disguises himself very cleverly are on the front lines doing Satan's work by spreading this sickness?

Yes, why would God create imperfect beings and then punish them for thier imperfections? Is that just? It's like if I buy an ant farm, open the lid and then crush the ants that crawl out. It's a perfectly predicable behavior yet I will punish them none the less. Makes sense to me.

  11. Tell it to each soldier who fought for this country and died for it as I have placed over 500 flags on their graves during Memorial Day ceremonies that its ok to burn the flag.  Not burning the flag would not cause tyranny. It would just give it the respect to something held with great regard.

So you are admitting this was an undercover operation.  I am glad Kearny needs your son to be the Secret Service.  It was improper and immoral. The week before the recordings he was out of school probably planning the whole thing or colaberating his assignment with you.

How can you say that since you never even approached that as an option? Now is too late as you have decided to take it a different route.

I know at least Matthew doesn’t care about his town or this would have been resolved months ago.  The last I did look was that this town was a part of this country. Therefore by conclusion Matthew doesn’t care about this country.

I hold the Constitution to be highest regard. What I do disagree with Paul on is the fact that the School Board said that this was handled and yet he continues to harass and blog and degrade the people of this town as well as the Administration.  Since that time I have not heard of one more instance of his so called preaching. It is just you trying to keep digging up old history and keeping your name and that of your son in the news.  Has anyone else heard of anything recently?  I think the Kearny School System is doing an excellent job.

    So you a

As far as flag burning goes look at it this way. I have never done it, no one I know has done it or plans to do it. I would do it however as a protest if they did in fact make it illegal. Why? Because if I burn a flag, I merely destroy a symbol but I did not destroy what it stands for. The minute that burning a flag is made illegal however, we have managed to destroy what the flag actually stands for which is far worse than the destruction of the symbol itself.

  12. This is what we get from a Charlie Brown look alike mayor.  How can he make recommendations by only listening to portions of the tapes?

How does someone run a town with stating that "We should repair the damage by implementing the following:

    1. I believe that the Kearny Board of Education?"

That is not implimenting anything just stating a belief?

The "Respecting Religion, the Rule of Law " sounds like something he copied out of a textbook and if so where is his point of reference?

"I must state that I do not condone the disregarding of the law of the land. "

This is just our fearful mayor trying to cover his butt.

"To question the student’s motivation is to engage in an exercise that will not change the plain meaning of the teacher’s statements." This sounds like he agrees that the teacher was being manipulated into this topic but doesnt want to make a public commitment on it.

What did you expect him to say?

  13. What it is about is ethics.  It is about Paul LaClair standing in front of the community and shouting more than once that his rights have been violated for a teacher discussing religion in class and taking scholarship from an Atheist Association hiding behind the name of Thomas Jefferson and sending his other child to a religious university that has given his family scholarship funds.

I for the life of me cannot see how that is not ethical?  And you wish me to call this family patriotic? A parent does foster and guide the child in these cases and it seems irresponsible how if the family's beliefs are that strong that they would let that child attend.  Perhaps there are other ulterior motives that are not being shared?

It still doesn't mean that Mr. "P" didn't screw up.

  14. ACLU members and suporters are nothing but left wing liberal self serving idiots.  These are the same people who are ruining this whole country and what our forefathers intended this great nation to be.  Now look at who they are going to vote for , Obama (right) and Hilary Clinton (not sure which is worse).

We are a doomed people if this keeps up. Then again 200+ years is a pretty good run.

Glad i wont be around for the next generation of inept, self righteous morons. They will not be able to fight their way out of a bag without having mommy there to complain that this isnt fair  no one should fail  or everyone should pass ....

Pathetic = ACLU, PETA, NAACP and a host of other liberal organizations.

I find your post interesting that you exactly described the Bush administration.

  15. You're reading comprehension needs polishing.  The ACLU's mission is the secularization of America. Their agenda is to promote a radical left, permissive society with no rules on personal behavior, and no mention of God.  That's why they defend organizations like NAMBLA. That's why they fought  to remove the cross from the Soledad War Memorial in San Deigo.  No one cares what you think on a "personal level".

    Patriot,

You failed to answer an earlier request that I made of you so I'll ask again. What would the world be like if you made the rules? What would society be like if you were in charge?

  16. N.Y. Teacher Fights Modern-Day 'Witch Trial'

Woman Says She Was Fired Because Principal Said She Practiced Witchcraft

    Reporting

(CBS) HAMPTON BAYS, N.Y. A Long Island elementary school teacher is suing the Hampton Bays school district after she was fired because her administrators allegedly believed she was a witch teaching witchcraft to her students. Her lawyer is calling the case a "21st century re-enactment of the Salem Witchcraft Trials."

Lauren Berrios told CBS 2 that she was terminated after she was told that she "entice[d] children into witchcraft and magic through literature."

Berrios, who was born a Catholic before converting to Judaism, said she was fired in 2001 after being falsely accused of being a witch, which is now the basis of her $2 million lawsuit. Her attorney, John Ray, says she was the victim of a public school district trying to push Christian values.

"There's unquestionably in this matter a question of church and state being not separated, but being brought together by born-again Christians in this school," Ray said.

A school spokesperson says Berrios' claim lacks merit, but in 2003 the school's principal at the time testified he believed that Berrios practiced witchcraft.

"Every school that I go to interview in I have to disclose to them that I was denied tenure for enticing children into witchcraft and magic," Berrios says.

Even before she was fired, Berrios says her principal removed books from her classroom, including the popular series "Goosebumps," as well as "Harry Potter." She believes books that didn't mesh with principal's religious values, even including African-American literature, were taken out of her curriculum.

Ray admits that Berrios' appearance didn't help her cause either, especially when she was teaching her students about the Salem witch trials. "Mrs. Berrios has long fingernails, wears dark make-up, wears black," he said.

Berrios' very own modern-day witch trial will likely draw to a close this week. The case will be decided by a federal jury beginning Wednesday.

  17. Can we  PLEASE  drop this  Mr. P., Matt &  Paul  circus and move on ?  EVERYTHING  that can possibly be said, has been said, many times over, Ad

    Nauseam.

If the normal people start ignoring this lunacy then just maybe the crazies        ( Paul & Strife ) will dry up and blow away.

I think KOTW would agree with me.

So only Paul and Strife are the crazies? That is very telling indeed!

  18. He doesn't know him. He never once went to talk to him.

Thank God for the people that does know Mr. P. and knows that he

is not the kind of person Paul is painting him to be.

And for the ones that does not know him keep in mind that Paul has an agenda.

His goal is to tarnish Mr. P.'s name and destroy his reputation.

Before you buy into what Paul has spread, go talk to Mr. P., he is a great guy and very approachable.

Really? I thought he just wanted him to admit his mistake, apologize and promise not to do it again. Then everyone could move on. Why hasn't Mr.P done this?

  19. Here's another gem from the ACLU.  At about the same time the ACLU was defending NAMBLA, they were in court in California sueing to prevent the Boy Scouts of America from camping on public lands.

So raping children is OK, but we have to protect our public lands from those Boy Scouts.  I wonder if Matthew was ever a Boy Scout ?

Man, you are such an idiot!
