  1. No, the Americans aren't the bad guys.  I'm pretty sure his/her point is; if it is disclosed in open session, it will find its way into the press, where the bad guys will be able to find it.

You mean that the "bad guys" in Iraq, whoever they may be, have no idea that we are doing so poorly? They are winning and have control over areas of the country but they don't know it?

Petraeus is not going to give out troop locations and war plans. He is--or should--be giving a report on the state of this mistake Bush made.

This administration keeps too many things secret and then lies about them. Why would anyone say that they will testify--which means "tell the truth"--as long as they are not under oath and there is no written record of what was said? They are trying to hide their f***-ups.

  2. What do you think it means when you post something and then add your name to it at the end?

Your post, with its distinctive order and headings, is not found in the Bible.  It is, however, found at an atheist site with an explicit copyright attached.

And you could not have done that while attributing it to the organization that holds the copyright?

    Some problem!  :P

Why should I put more effort into addressing your post than you put in writing it?  :)

There is no indisputable proof of God's existence, AFAICT, so I continue to wonder why you'd offer such a stupid and meaningless challenge.

Probably the same reason you ignore copyrights.  You want to look better than you are.

Nice misdirection, bry, now try to rationalize the actual bible quotes, or do they just don't mean what they mean.

  3. Billy speaks with authority on this subject, she spent many years in the Girl Scouts.

Hahahahahahahah. Gosh, patrat, you are such a wit. And a brilliant social commentarian. Your insight is stupendous.

I was in a 4-H club, not the girl scouts.

Care to address any of the ideas I brought up? I didn't think so.

  4. I can hear a famous chorus in the background,"They're coming to take me away ha ha. They're coming to take me away hee hee!"  So sad....

By the way Paulie, those Dominionists, are they hiding in area 57 or Roswell New Mexico? No, really, I'm curious.... :P

Try Googling "dominionist", "restorationist", "take back america", Rod Parsley, D. James Kennedy, or Gary North. These searches will lead you to dozens of other sites encouraging their followers to change our government into a fundamentalist christian theocrazy.

  5. They don't need to be authoritative.  They just need to have good reason for the translation.

Been there, done that.  You just ignore it and keep blathering on and on as though you think you know what you're talking about.

Were you also aware that the Hebrew in chapter 2 allows for past tense (rendered in the NIV, for example, "had formed")?

    http://forums.kearnyontheweb.com/index.php...ic=11139&st=20#

"Biblical Hebrew does not have past, present and future tenses like English (modern Hebrew is another story altogether, however). Instead, action is regarded as either complete or incomplete. Incomplete action is referred to as perfect and incomplete action is referred to as imperfect. Generally speaking, the perfect aspect will be translated into English with the English past tense and the imperfect will be translated into English with the English future tense. However, this is only an approximation of the situation, and so there will be times when altogether different tenses will be better in certain circumstances."

    http://www.theology.edu/hebrew/hb07.htm"

    http://forums.kearnyontheweb.com/index.php...c=11139&st=120#

Instead of looking into the issue to find out the basis for using past perfect in the translation of the verb, you apparently assumed that doctrinal considerations alone explain the translation.  None of you dealt with the plain basis for my argument as I gave it from the first:  the Hebrew permits the translation on the basis of grammar and context.

I am not arguing that the Hebrew allows both translations but your insistence and the insistence of the NIV translators to say that your translation is the right one. The decision to use either the past or past-perfect in English was not done by a coin toss.

  6. Come home wiith Victory or come home on your shield.

Just what exactly does victory look like? So far we have not done anything to prevent or end the civil war in Iraq. We are not fighting an army that wears Al-Quaeda emblems on their uniforms. It is hard for most Americans to find any differences between Sunni and Shia, between Al-Quaeda and non-Al-Quaeda. Even if we kill all of the Sunni or the Shia or Al-Quaeda the Middle East has millions more of each to replace them. Korea is different from Iraq because we are on a defensive footing and there has been very little conflict there in many years. Our occupation of Iraq would just be an open wound and we will keep wasting lives there for years.

  7. "This a secular country" ??  Another atheist fantasy.    80% of the U.S. is Christian. Our money is printed and engraved with "In God We Trust". The Supreme Court displays the Ten Commandments. In court you put your hand on a bible and swear to tell the truth "so help you God". Millions of Nativity Scenes are displayed throughout the country at Christmas. "White Christmas" is the best selling song of all time. The President of the U.S. is a Christian who attends church regularly. The U.S. Congress recesses over Christmas. The Speaker of the House is Christian and attends church regularly.  But don't feel bad, you have Paul and Matthew on your side.

You could also use the same sort of facts to prove that this is a white country. Most of the people in the US are white. Our money is printed and engraved with pictures of white people, the Supreme Court is currently made up of all white people. Millions of Nativity Scenes depict Jesus, Mary, & co. as white europeans. "White Christmas" goes without saying. It was written and sung by white people. All of the presidents have been white, the Speaker of the House is white and associates often with white people. Also, white people wrote our constitution, the majority of our elected officials have been white, and I could go on. All of these facts do not make this country a white country to the elimination of all others. Our laws now are racially-neutral, even though our behavior and our application of the laws is not. Our laws are also religiously-neutral although their application is not.

  8. It would have been shorter for you to just admit you were changing the subject.

It's pretty much always possible to find a division of opinion about anything.

    You're just flapping your gums.

Buttwipe: You were the one who brought up the historical philosophical foundation of the Constitution. I just pointed out that at the time of it's ratification there were christians who thought that the Constitution was not based on biblical principles and now there are christians that insist that it was based on biblical principles. It either was or wasn't. The evidence of the document itself says that it was not based on biblical principles. Instead of trying to insult me, why don't you discuss what you feel is the historical philosophical foundation of the Constitution?

You still haven't explained how property isn't property:

Exodus 21:20-21 When a slaveowner strikes a male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies immediately, the owner shall be punished. But if the slave survives a day or two, there is no punishment; for the slave is the owner's property

Leviticus 25:44-46 As for the male and female slaves you may have, it is from the nations around you that you may acquire male and female slaves. You may also acquire them from the aliens residing with you, and from their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property. You may keep them as a possession for your children after you, for them to inherit as property. These you may treat as slaves, but as for your fellow Israelites, no one shall rule over the other with harshness.

You also haven't given any proof that the NIV translation of Genesis 2 has more authority than the twenty-five I quoted that disagree.

You always try to hide your ignorance and intransigence behind terms used in a high school debate but you never really address issues. Basically, you keep using the "'cause I said so" argument. Why don't you just hold your breath until you turn blue? That would be a step up for you.

I've stopped calling you a dick because I don't want to associate one of my favorite body parts with you.

  9. CULINARY DEPARTMENT

"...Hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?" --Isaiah 36:12; also in II Kings 18:27.

The lord commanded: "And thou shalt eat it as barley cakes, and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of man, in their sight." --Ezekiel 4:12.

"And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat." --Levitcus 26:29.

"And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons, and of thy daughters which the LORD thy god hath given thee..." --Deuteronomy 28:53.

"So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son." --2 Kings 6:29.

    JUSTICE

"When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets; then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her." --Deuteronomy 25:11-12.

"He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD." --Deuteronomy 23:1.

"...the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction; and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods (piles) in their secret parts." --1 Samuel 5:9.

The lord was appeased, however, after the men had made golden images of their emerods (piles). --1 Samuel 6:4.

    HYGIENE

The lord promised: "Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall..." --1 Kings 14:10. (This unsanitary practice caused some serious erosion of the mud walls).

    SLAPSTICK COMEDY

The lord threatened his children: "Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces." --Malachi 2:3.

    SPORT

"Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones." --Psalms 137:9.

"And he (David) brought out the people that were in it and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of Ammon." --1 Chronicles 20:3.

"And he (David) brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick-kiln." --2 Samuel 12:31.

    GRAND OPERA

"Wherefore my bowels shall sound like an harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kir-haresh." --Isaiah 16:11.

    SELF IMPROVEMENT

"...(become) eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake." --Matthew 19:12. (Origen, Paul and other early Christians faithfully carried out this divine injunction.)

"Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee: cut them off, and cast them from thee." --Matthew 18:8.

    BURLESQUE

God said to Moses: "And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen." --Exodus 33:23.

    LOVE AND MARRIAGE

"Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses." -- Ezekiel 23:19-20.

"...so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and that they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning..." (She died) --Judges 19:25.

King Saul asked 100 foreskins in return for his daughter in marriage. David zealously pared off 200 Philistine prepuces to win his bride. --I Samuel 19:25-27.

"And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto they brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother." --Genesis 38:8-9.

    BEDTIME STORIES

The men of Sodom wanted to bugger two angels abiding with Lot. Lot said, "Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known a man; let me, I pray you, bring them unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes." --Genesis 19:8.

But the Sodomites preferred male angels. The Lot family escaped; Mrs. Lot looked back, became a pillar of salt; father Lot and daughters fled to a cave, at which time the elder daughter proposed: "Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father." --Genesis 19:32.

"Thus were both daughters of Lot with child by their father." --Genesis 19:36.

Moses told his soldiers: "Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves." --Numbers 31:17-18.

    FULFILLED PROMISES

Christ demanded: "But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me." --Luke 19:27.

Christ announced: "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." --Matthew 10:34.

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." --Exodus 22:18. Thanks to the vigilance of good Christians, witches were killed in great numbers before the year 1712.

Im so glad that God "loves" Me

    Hey, It's your bible..........

Wonderful. The only mistake I saw was that the great Philistine foreskin collection is is in 1 Samuel 18, not 19.

I also noted, to my delight, how various other versions change what the KJV has.

  10. What an intelligent, well thought out response. I never understood the "oh yea, well... your dumb" kind of response that I have seen. Perhaps you should consider that there are better ways to make an argument, rather that childish attacks. I do not think poorly of you, but I think that perhaps you are angry and this is your way to release it. I hope you can understand why it makes posts like yours a waste. There seems to be no real substance in it, just personal attacks. Maybe you should try to backup your arguments with reason, and people may begin to think more of you, even if they disagree with you.

Matt, I admire you immensely and I am so impressed by your ability to stand up to a fanatic and bully like Mr P, but I think you are giving this guest way too much credit. I doubt if he could ever come up with an argument more cogent than "Stick it."

People who think you did everything you did in hope of gain cannot be more wrong. After reading everything positive I have about you I cannot for a second imagine you slinking around, rubbing your hands together, and planning who your next victim would be. You have exhibited too much courage and generosity for anyone sane to think you had base intentions.

  11. No. I have a direct connect with  reality. It's not me who spends his entire life posting here trying to anonymously hide under a fictitious name.  Nice try, loser. Guess you are not getting any speaking engagements or scholarships soon.

"Unregistered Guest" is less anonymous than Strife767? Before you accuse anyone of hiding under a fictitious name, give us your real name. I just bet you are a product of KHS.

  12. I would tell him my religion is a very personal thing and I would listen attentively like I do in all subjects and formulate my own opinions.  Whether they are brought up in class or not is my decision.  And from the class discussions there were no attacks from either side, verbal or otherwise. You were not there.  At no time during this class discussion did Matthew or Mr. P bring up the subject of the Constitution, so that was not an issue. I would ask the interviewer to review the tapes for himself for him to make his own assessment. I think my own character stands for itself and I do have creativity and imagination. And I am sure I would tell the benefits of how I could be an asset to this college.

And especially at the end of this interviewer speech to me I would make sure to get his name and number and notify this college of his interview tactics. This teacher has been teaching for a number of years with a large number of students getting accepted to great institutions like MIT and similar.  I would say that Mr. P's  teachings have not effected in any way how successful the other students who have passed through the halls of Kearny High.  I hope to be one of those success stories.  Matthew's handling and my own opinions of how he mishandled or handled it, have no effect on me.

That is what I would tell him, Sir.

When I applied for college I was required to send in a writing sample. If this is the best you can do, aim low. Try a community college.

The transcripts clearly show P's culpability and his letters to the editor show his arrogance.

  13. Really ? Please tell me what the draftees will do.

    You're a vet and you don't know? :o

I guess you haven't learned any lesson from Nam. Except this time it may be worse.

One of the things that hastened the end of the war in Vietnam was the changing of the draft to a lottery system in 1968. I remember this well. My number was 359. I had already been determined to be ineligible for military service, but many of my friends who had had deferments before were now worried and worked harder to end the war. Rich people like Bush and Cheney were able to use their influence to avoid the draft and the reality of combat before 1968. At that time being drafted was like being summoned for jury duty--someone once asked if anyone would want to be judged by a group of people who were too stupid to get out of jury duty. People who could would weasel their way out of service.

  14. I would like to hear from all of those who are angry with Matt for blowing the whistle

I would like it all to die.

    It's over now.

    The year ended in June

    Why do you keep pushing???

This will not spill into another school year.

I had children eligable for schlorships while this was going on.

I makes for interesting conversation with the recruiters

I would love to watch a student trying to impress a recruiter by trying to explain Paszkiewicz's illegal behavior.

  15. Of course, dimwit. That's exactly what a terrorist would expect, to be dismissed as a threat because of an outrageous t-shirt. Stick to what you know best, trying to disprove God.

Right, a terrorist will try not to call attention to himself by wearing a t-shirt that calls attention to him. I bet I could make millions selling T-shirts that say "I am a terrorist." What a numbnut.

Meanwhile, I'm still looking for support from Patrat for his initial outrageous statement. In a previous post that was withdrawn he said the ACLU forced a school to punish a girl for wearing a Christian symbol. In reality this was a case of a girl in England--remember the American part of American Civil Liberties Union. She was disciplined for wearing her silver ring that magically repelled sexual advances. The school said it was against their dress code. The school won the case.

  16. Good grief.  The Dingbat doesn't know when to silence himself.

"Or And out of the ground the Lord God formed"

The ESB was a long way from calling it the "correct" translation--that's all Dingbat.

No, and neither are papers written at a doctoral level, nor writings that Dingbat can't understand at all (such as Sanskrit writings?).

There's always the original Hebrew or Greek if the NIV gets too easy for them.

Your consistency would be admirable, Dingbat, if you weren't consistently silly.  There is no bar to truthfulness based on the level of discourse.

Two grades above newspaper discourse!  :)

I gave the NIV as an example of a legitimate grammatical translation.  Your attempt to respond to that point makes you deserving of ridicule.

That the verb is legitimately translated into the past perfect tense on the basis of the grammar and the context.

<snip Dingbat's even more outrageous waste of time>

    1)  Why is it a considerable stretch?

    2)  What should determine how the verb is translated?

    This should be good!

    :o

It is improper to call ridicule my last resort.  You've never addressed my argument except with a fallacious appeal to popularity.  Instead of asking yourself why Bible translators use the past perfect tense, you simply assume that they are wrong since they are in the minority.

Rather than being my last resort, ridicule is a purely decorative cherry atop the large and  scrumptious sundae of your humiliating defeat.

And this is  just one more among many examples why you are a dingbat and deserve to be ignored.

This is more of the radical fundie thinking on controversial issues. Over 90% of the world's scientists involved in evoutionary studies accept evolution. The fundies find a handful of scientists--often not involved with evolution--who say that evolution is false. They ignore the 90% and go with the crackpots. The same is true with global warming. Most of the world's environmental scientists say that global warming exists, so they find a few sciency guys who say it does not exist. Fundies ignore all of the evidence and the opinion of many experts and go along with the nutjobs who don't believe in global warming.

Brian thinks that the NIV translation is best because it fits his beliefs. He ignores the opinions of the vast majority of biblical scholars and picks a translation that he agrees with. Somehow the small number of conservative, literalist translators that put together the NIV knew better than the vast majority of translators.

Bryan asked about the other 5 versions that didn't use the past perfect tense. I already explained that. Keep digging your hole, Bryan. Someday you may wind up in China.

  17. Right--and you found a number of translations that support what I was saying.

What will you do for an encore?  Trip over your own feet?

Yes, I found three out of thirty that support your position. All three were put together by fundamentalist biblical literalists. What makes them more authoritive than the twenty-five that do not support your position. Because you say so is not a reason. Take your head out of your ass and come up with a real answer.

  18. The Atheistic Communist Liberties Union (ACLU) has filed a lawsuit against the Homeland Security Agency. An Iraqi trying to board a plane wearing a t-shirt with the logo "we will never be silenced" in English and Arabic was told by the HSA to remove the shirt or he couldn't fly. The ACLU has offered to represent the Iraqi in a lawsuit against the HSA.

Where did you dig this one up? I can't find anything on the internet about it. I know you don't need any facts to prove your points, but some of us do.

  19. Are you suggesting that the Constitution provides the historical philosophical foundation for the United States of America, or are you just trying to change the subject?

I am talking about the historicalphilosophical foundation of the Constitution. At the time it was being ratified there were Christians that said it was un-godly. Now there are Christians who say it is a godly document founded on the Ten Commandments.

  20. Right--and you found a number of translations that support what I was saying.

What will you do for an encore?  Trip over your own feet?

Three out of thirty agree with you and they were put together by biblical literalists who had a conservative agenda. I take the scholarship and integrity of the people who worked on the other twenty-five committees much more seriously than yours.

Other than the fact that you say so, why is the NIV version the correct one?

Take your foot out of your mouth and your head out of your ass.

    You are such a dick.

  21. Fine.  You can start by supporting your implicit assumption that only the NIV renders the verse using the past tense.

I can't find anything in Dingo Dave's posts that assume that. The NIV does not use the past tense. It's the past perfect tense. I noted that I checked thirty versions of the bible and 25 of them used the words "formed" or "made". Among the 25 there were some that were put together by fundies to support the fundie position. They include the good news bible and the message.

Your attempt to avoid the argument by bringing in a non-issue shows the weakness of your argument.

Can you cite any other bible versions that use the past perfect tense?
