Stop Franklin Middle School

Guest Outraged Parent

Every parent in Kearny needs to come out for the upcoing BOE election and vote OUT the current board, who want to take Franklin School and turn it into a middle school.

Some questions you may ask:

--How will children from Roosevelt, Schuyler and Lincoln get over to Franklin for Grades 6-8? How will smaller children get from Franklin School district to other schools outside of their neighborhood? The answer: YOU, the parent, will drive them. Does Grandma or Grandpa walk with your child now? They will now need a car or the ability to walk clear across town. Enjoy trying to find a parking space while you drop off/pick up, and the wonderful visitations from police and parking authority who make a business of harassing and punishing mothers dropping their children off.

--Why do we need a middle school, anyway? Why do we want our children to have to be transported out of their neighborhoods? Lincoln School just renovated. Schuyler school was renovated. Could the answer be, to give someones' relatives jobs???

--Why haven't you seen an article in The Observer about the Middle School agenda? Letters to the Editor have been written, none published to date. Why, indeed. Maybe this is China, not the USA.

--Who is going to pay for this unnecessary Middle School? That's right, YOU.

That's pretty lame. Outraged Parent has raised some very good questions. I don't know if Outraged's conclusions are right. But I do know we live in a democracy. Our elected and appointed officials should explain School Superintendent Degeser's plan to establish a middle school. I'm outraged that it's being done behind closed doors to select audiences without any real public input. That's upsetting. The public pays for the schools. We should not be treated as an afterthought by the school administration.

Why? What's wrong with that? Or get them in the car and drop them off and pick them up.

Oh I get it. You spit 'em out and now the KBOE is supposed to provide a solution to the logistics of your life.

What if the parent/guardian doesn't have a car? People in Kearny have always lived in the school district they wanted their children to attend. People who live near Washington and Franklin schools moved there knowing that their children would attend the same school until the start of high school. People near Roosevelt lived their knowing that their children would attend Lincoln school after 6th grade. This is not a request for the KBOE to figure out the logistics of anyone's life. It is just a fact that people in Kearny never planned on sending their children to school across town.

Now you have a big fight in town about who doesn't want their kids walking to Franklin. Who doesn't want their kids with "those kids". People from one end of town honestly believing they are better then those from the other end. It is ridiculous. We are all from one town. We all bleed the same color. Give it up people!

That's just a ridiculous statement, it's not even the point. The point is a lot of parents with younger children who may have before or after care arrangements made are stuck now. What is a parent to to??? Oh wait....yeah, let these "fat little porkers" walk themselves to school.

so the way I see it is there are many arguements for not moving or creating a middle school, but no real arguement for having it so why not leave the kearny school system as is. They just revamped Lincoln school and recently expanded Schuyler school why would you make an antiquaited Franklin school a place for all kearny students to attend sound ludicrous to me

Tax money paid for schuyler and lincoln to be renovated and if this middle school at franklin goes through we will be paying again to get franklin renovated into a middle school

there are safety issues and concerns with children being taken away from their neighborhood schools and made to walk to a school that is further away

What happens to school standards in 2014? In the Observer story this week, Digeser said over and over that the new standards make it necessary to have a middle school. Is that true? Is he trying to blame someone else for his folly?

Why don't you tell the mother whos kid got killed by a car because of double parked vehicles near a school, that your sorry, but your too lazy to find a spot and walk with your kids across the street. They "Harass" you to keep the kids safe. Because 1 double parked car turns into 100 and then you have kids running in and out of traffic. Their main concern is keeping the roadway clear, so children can see the traffic coming. Not traffic going around double parked vehicles. So next time you cry and whine about being told to move your car, take a look at what double parking does to the danger level in the roadway. Put down your giant piece of cheesecake, and get your fat ass out of the car.

Gee, how original. A school post that includes the "police and parking officials" harassing the public. Maybe if more people walked their kids to school, there wouldn't be double parkers and people parking in the hydrants, crosswalks and prohibited areas, making it extremely dangerous for walking parents/kids to navigate around the areas. It is not a harassment issue folks, they are doing there job and are good at it. I have put 3 kids through the Kearny Public School system and have never been stopped or summonsed dropping off my kids. When I did have to drive them, I found a spot a block away and walked them to the school. Stop being lazy and demanding that you drop off your kids right in front of the front door, or pick them up and drive off without fastening their seatbelts and you too will have no problems. Stop blaming the "police and parking officials" for your lazy ass.

OK Boys and Girls... With all the cuts to education the Middle School for Kearny has been put on the back burner - for now. Right now we have to just redistrict just to fit the 200+ families who are going to move into the townhouses on the corner of Bergen and Schuyler Aves. Franklin CANNOT absorb another child. They already have at least 5 of every grade - over 1000 kids. So even though people are not going to be happy, with or without a Middle School (and personally I think we should call it The Frank Digesere Middle School) Kearny needs to move kids around in this town.

BTW - whose bright idea was it to allow the building of 200+ houses in the Franklin School district without requiring the building to pay toward renovations/building on to Franklin School?

You are 100% correct. The current BOE led by McDonald are just going to rubber stamp Degesere and everything he presents to them. We need a board that cares about the taxpayers and the kids.

Doffant is Harrison's middle school principal so he LOVES the idea. Sgalia just does what McDonald says.

Degesere has no back-up to what he says and changes his tune every time someone asks.

VOTE FOR King, Munro and O'Malley they will STOP this madness

Did you ever bother to ask McDonald, Doffant or Sgalia what they think of the middle school idea? You should, you will be surprised. I contacted the them of them and they each told me in no uncertain terms, that there isn't going to be a middle school. The money isn't there. They also state that they were never spoken to as a board regarding the middle school.

What a crock. It is amazing how the BOE and the super have done a total back-off from the middle school issue. Ever since community concerns came out against the middle school our leaders have denied backing it and even talking or having knowledge about it. Now, if you were at the BOE meeting, while Frank D was trying to "sell" the middle school Bernadette's head never stopped bobbing up and down in agreeance.

Well if they don't want the middle school, than YOU better tell Frank D about it, because than he'll stop trying to get them re-elected because they are ALL FOR IT. So now you to have been lied to.

If they were not spoken to as a board than who approved, almost 6 weeks ago, the money to hire the firm to look into redistricting for the middle school? The BOE.

I addressed the question of redistricting. With the new townhouses being built by Franklin School, the redistricting is needed. That does not mean a middle school. It just means shifting the borders for each school. It should have been done years ago. You have Schuyler School that is a Pre-K through 8th grade school with only 400 kids in it and then you have Garfield that only goes to 6th grade with over 600 kids. It doesn't make any sense.

Schuyler doesn't even have enough room for the 500+ kids that are there. The new building was too small when it was planned and built. There are 2 of every grade and 3 1st and 4th grades. Before you start just shifting kids and dividing them equally around the district, please check your facts and make sure of how many children a school can actually hold.

Well Frank you have just provided the smoking gun. "I addressed the question of redistricting". Everyone already knew you were trying to give your current puppet regime cover and now you have just proven it.

Between this post and your shameful Observer article you should be ashamed to even continue to work in Kearny. That coupled with the fact that you didn't even have the courage or honor to put your name on the post instead of guest is just as disturbing. Own your deciet and lies.

You have done nothing but lie and back peddle on your statements to numerous people and teachers about the middle school.

You are a disgrace and you should be replaced faster than the incumbents running for re-election.

SHAME ON YOU.

Now that there is no money the middle school scheme is off? You disgust and shame us all.

If you get your Queen Cheerleader back for three more years the middle school will be back like the sad reality of you coming back.

The only surprise would be if they told the truth. The rubber stamp gang will do whatever the dictator and her boss tell them to do.

'They were never spoken to as a board" they were spoken to one on one and were all for the middle school until they saw that the people of Kearny were throwing them off the board and now all of a sudden they are against it.

Try selling this load of crap to someone who doesn't have a brain. Start with the incumbents.

Do us all a favor and leave the town. You are all a disgrace.
