Guest Ryan
A big thanks to our boys in blue for another job well done! Great job by Newark PD too! There are a lot of us in town who still appreciate what you guys do everyday. Keep up the good work! From NJ.Com: A 19-year-old Newark man led police on a chase through Kearny, jumped into the Passaic River and swam across before he was finally captured by members of the Newark Police Department’s Marine Unit this morning, authorities allege. Kalei Cheek was fleeing from Kearny Police after he allegedly carjacked a vehicle on Seeley Avenue when he crashed the car and fled into the Passaic River around 11 a.m., according to Kearny Police Capt. Stephen Durkin. A boat from Newark Police’s marine unit chased Cheek as he swam through the river and towards the Bridge Street bridge, according to Detective Todd McClendon, a city police spokesman. He was arrested in the parking lot of Rodizio 21 a short time later. McClendon said. The passeger in the vehicle, 18-year-old Kearney resident Noel Johnson, was captured by Kearny Police and charged with receiving stolen property and resisting arrest, Durkin said. Robert Sciarrino/The Star-Ledger A man led police on a chase and swam across the Passaic River, pictured in this file photo, before being captured. Cheek was charged with carjacking, eluding and resisting arrest, according to Durkin. Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio praised the Marine Unit for arresting Cheek and possibly saving him from the sometimes turbulent river. "Oftentimes when we are faced with the challenge of removing people from the Passaic River it turns into a recovery mission because of the strong current and water temperature," he said. "I am thrilled that in this case due to the skillful and determined actions of our Marine Unit we were able safely apprehend the suspect."
