Guest Truth Teller
"Knee-jerk" used to refer to the left. The new knee-jerks, for several decades now, are on the right. In political advertising, it is considered enough just to say that someone supported a tax. We have an aging population. The baby boomers are in their fifties and sixties. This dynamic will persist for the next 25 years or so. Because most of the elderly are not working any more, they are either living off their life savings or are receiving support from government, mainly through Social Security and Medicare. Social Security was supposed to be self-sustaining but in fact each generation has had to find inventive ways to support the fund. Medicare comes straight from taxes. Taken together, the two programs account for approximately sixty percent of federal spending. If you don't mind having millions of elderly people living under bridges, becoming ill, suffering horribly and then dying a miserable death, then maybe you're for eliminating these programs. If you don't think that's a good or moral thing to do, then we must pay for the programs. One of the reasons our politics have become so stupid is that the American people have become stupid. We are facing difficult times for reasons that are no one's fault and we are compounding those problems with bad choices. The worse it gets, the harder it is for anyone to govern because fewer and fewer people trust the government, even though its challenges are far greater than they have ever been. So let's hear it, right wingers. How do you propose to keep taxes low with an aging population, and what will be the consequences if we do it your way? Remember to support your answer with careful reason and to cite facts.
