New law on pay discrimination

Lily Ledbetter worked in Alabama for years as a plant supervisor. Near the end of her career she learned for the first time that men in the company doing the same job were being paid more than she was. That's illegal, and has been illegal for many years.

But because Republicans have stacked the Supreme Court with right wing political hacks, the Supreme Court ruled that her suit was untimely since she hadn't filed it within 180 days of receiving her first paycheck, which was the first act of discrimination. Of course, she didn't know she was being paid less than the men in the company until years later, but the right wing political hacks on the Supreme Court didn't care, so they threw out her case and made any case like hers invalid. For years, every court in the country interpreted the law to mean that each paycheck was a new act of discrimination, so that the 180 days started to run with the last paycheck. Courts have nearly always left laws like that alone, reasoning that if Congress didn't agree with how the law was being interpreted, it could change the law. None of that mattered to the current Supreme Court, which is controlled by right wing political hacks. The vote, which completely changed the law on the whim of five justices on the Supreme Court, was 5-4. Guess which Supreme Court justices voted in the majority.

Yesterday President Obama signed the Fair Pay Act. From now on, each paycheck is a new act of discrimination. From now on, people won't be punished if they don't find out that they're being discriminated against until years later. From now on, the rights people are supposed to have will actually mean something. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/29/opinion/...ref=todayspaper

Unfortunately, those five right wing hacks are still sitting on the Supreme Court. The damage they are doing to this country is incalculable. So much for conservatives being against judicial activism. It's bad enough their policies have all but destroyed our economy. They're not even honest.

I wonder who her sexist employer was.
