CHECEx-Harrison official imprisoned for stealing meter money

by Rick Hepp/The Star-Ledger Thursday March 20, 2008, 12:06 PM

A former public works superintendent in Harrison who stole $100,000 in coins from the town's parking meters is in the Hudson County Correctional Center today after getting a three-year sentence for official misconduct, authorities said.

William Tanski, 55, was sentenced March 7 by Superior Court Judge Frederick Theemling and he is being housed at the jail until a state-prison bed is available, the county sheriff's office said.

Tanski was arrested in May 2006 after Harrison police noticed a significant jump in parking meter collections following his retirement two years earlier, authorities said. He pleaded guilty in June 2007 to charges of theft and official misconduct.

He could have faced up to 10-years behind bars after pleading to the second-degree charges, but Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said Tanski's conviction was treated as a third-degree crime because of his age and his lack of a criminal history.

The sentence comes as state and federal authorities investigate the web of public jobs, contracts and relationships in Harrison, The Star-Ledger reported last year. The tiny town, located across the river from Newark, has embarked on one of New Jersey's most ambitious redevelopment efforts, with plans for thousands of new housing units, retail stores and a 25,000-seat professional soccer stadium.

It is unclear how Tanski, a friend and campaign supporter to Mayor Raymond McDonough, carted off hundreds of thousands of coins without being noticed.

Authorities have said Tanski had a gambling problem. In a petition filed in U.S. bankruptcy court, Tanski had reported $360,000 in debts to four Atlantic City casinos, plus tens of thousands more in credit-card bills.

Tanski's successor in the $95,000-a-year public works job was Ronald Catrambone, a member of a renowned family in Harrison who was charged three times in the 1990s with promoting gambling.

In a 1991 indictment, state prosecutors identified him as "Fat Ronnie," an associate in the Genovese crime family.

He later accepted a plea bargain that included no jail time.

Our, "heart of gold'" is going bye-bye. How sad. The question is did he get to keep his pension and benefits. I guess someone will find outt at a later date. Ray wasted no time getting a new best in all 3 feet of Tom Powell at over $100,000.00 a year. I cannot wait until that situation blows up.

Because they are all in on the gambling, all departments are involved including the ********* *******, there a re a few pools running out of there and that is a disgrace considering there is no place for the kids to go yet the place where they can go is a ticket/pool money drop off. I have seen it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears. I have heard about guys **** *** ********** that are asking people for money on pay day becasue they had to hand their check over to cover their gambling debt.

I don't think Billy Tanski did a quarter of what **** *** **** is doing and I can assure you he has been stealing ***** *** *** and has cost the town tons of money ** ******** ********* **** ******* ************. I am sure you didn't hear about that did you??? they kept that real quiet...I hear *** ***** settled for around 25,000.00. All of you involved will have your day in hell and I hope I am alive to piss on your grave.
