THE NEW HARRISON BUDGET HAS FINALLY BEEN INTRODUCED AND CONTRARY TO THE OPINION OF KEARNY JOURNAL WRITER ROSE DUGER THERE IS NO GOOD NEWS. ONCE AGAIN HARRISON RESIDENTS WILL BE FACED WITH AN INCREASE IN MUNICIPAL TAXES. THE TIME FOR TAX AND SPEND POLITICS HAS TO COME TO AN END.

THE ARTICLE PRAISES AN INCREASE OF $166,000 OF NEW TAX RATABLES FROM THE NEW HAMPTON INN BUT FAILS TO MENTION THE LOSS OF TAX REVENUE GIVEN UP BY THE LOSS OF THE J.SUPOR AND CLAYTON CONTAINER PROPERTIES. THE ARTICLE ALSO FAILS TO POINT OUT THAT DESPITE HAVING AN OVER ALL BUDGET CRISIS OF ROUGHLY $10 MILLION, THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL HAVE FAILED TO CURB SPENDING AND IMPLEMENT A HIRING FREEZE.

THE MAYOR WAS QUOTED AS SAYING "THE FACT THAT WE'RE AN ABBOTT DISTRICT REALLY HELPS ALOT". HOW LONG CAN THE MAYOR COUNT ON THE STATE TO BAIL HARRISON OUT. IF THE STATE DECIDES TO CUT ABBOTT DISTRICT FUNDS, AS WAS PROPOSED ALREADY, HARRISON RESIDENTS WILL SEE AN UNPRECEDENTED INCREASE IN TAXES.

BLAMING SALARIES, PENSIONS, AND HEALTH BENEFITS FOR THE INCREASE IS RIDICULOUS. I HAVE SEEN THE TOWNS BUDGETS AND EXPENDITURES AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM TO CUT THAT $1 MILLION INCREASE. I HOPE THAT HARRISONIANS WILL STAND UP.

The problem with Harrisonians "standing up" is that they don't have a clue what the budget looks like and whats in it. In other towns they hold PUBLIC BUDGET HEARINGS.and make copies of the budget available to all the town residents that attend the hearings. Residents can question expenditures they don't agree with and can often get the council to reduce or eliminate them. WHEN'S THE LAST TIME YOU SAW A PUBLIC BUDGET HEARING IN HARRISON WITH COPIES OF THE BUDGET PROVIDED ??? Do Harrison residents realize that the town is required by law to provide copies of the budget to interested residents and to hold PUBLIC HEARINGS BEFORE IT IS ADOPTED ??? If residents don't unite and demand to see the budget and to question the budget and to demand cuts where they see fit, THEN DON"T COMPLAIN ABOUT YOUR TAXES !!

What kind of revenue did the old Clayton Container property give the Town of Harrison? How long has it been out of business? Give it a break. If you think you can do something about it, Mr. Hinchcliffe, stop talking about it on here and run against the mayor in 2006. Otherwise, be quiet. :D

Hey Mike if you become mayor can we get the million dollar lights like Newark got for the bridges? Its a joke how the politicians play with the taxpayers money. I was reading the star ledger today about how Corizine wants to raise money through a gas tax. What is he freaking nuts? maybe because his gas is paid for in his state vehicle, or he has a driver like every other politician. Wake up taxpayers and open your mouth cause the big B is coming. BANKRUPT the town of harrison will soon be with this current administration.

GO MIKE HINCH FOR MAYOR>

I'm new to Harrison, so I might be wrong on this. I haven't seen public hearings on the town budget being advertised. Also, I would like to get a copy of the town budget. The budget has been introduced, when can I expect these hearings to be held ?? I'm particularly interested in the police and fire budgets.

What hiring freeze? The construction dept. just hired someone and the water dept. got a new person also. Can I get in on this "hiring freeze", I can use a town job with benefits like that.
