  1. :)  :D yes yes its got a name its wonderfull its great its called [[[[[[R,E,V,I,V,A,L]]]]]]    PASTORS GET READY CLEARGY ITS YOUR TURN! RABBIS CALL THEM TO TEMPLE" ITS COMMING YOUR WAY!

Such drama. Oh well, nothing wrong with that. Enjoy your revival.

  2. If only Strife could have managed to read one paragraph further:

"In the 20th century, the division between history and prehistory became problematic. Criticism arose because of history's implicit exclusion of certain civilizations, such as those of Sub-Saharan Africa and pre-Columbian America. Additionally, prehistorians such as Vere Gordon Childe and historical archaeologists like James Deetz began using archaeology to explain important events in areas that were traditionally in the field of history. Historians began looking beyond traditional political history narratives with new approaches such as economic, social and cultural history, all of which relied on various sources of evidence. In recent decades, strict barriers between history and prehistory may be decreasing."

    (bold emphasis added)

Are you guys trying to make me overconfident by posting as many lame arguments as possible, or what?

Hmm.. Let me get this straight. You think that the fuzziness of the distinction between history and prehistoric civilizations somehow removes the absurdity of Paszkiewicz stretching the definition of "history" to events prior to the existence of any humans? Prior even to the existence of the earth?

And you accuse other people of posting lame arguments? Good grief.

Can you not see the absurdity of his statement, even in context of trying to defend something he said in a US history class? Granted, it's a fairly small point. We all say dumb things sometimes, especially when stressed. But to try to make out like it wasn't a dumb thing to say is just ridiculous.

    Your overconfidence is badly misplaced.

  3. Brilliant analogy !!  Driving unbuckeled and raping children. Do you read what you type ?

The point is that being guilty of one thing (or in this case, of merely advocating the legalization of it) does not mean that one should be summarily judged guilty of any other accusations that are made against him. Nor does it mean that he should be denied any rights that have not been specifically forfeit as part of the punishment for a conviction (loss of voting rights for felons, for example).

Likewise, a defense of one thing does not constitute a defense of EVERYTHING said or done by the same person(s). The ACLU's defense of NAMBLA's free speech was no more a defense of pedophilia than their defense of Rush Limbaugh's right to privacy was a defense of prescription drug abuse.

Keep in mind that the same freedom of speech that lets groups like NAMBLA, and the KKK advocate their sickness is the very same freedom of speech that allows you and I to point out the depravity of their views and advocate the opposite. That is as it should be. And that is what the ACLU defends. Let the scumbags speak. How else are we to know what they stand for? And let the rest of us speak, so we can openly oppose them.

I'll leave you with something Thomas Jefferson said in response to a book that was being censored:

If M. de Becourt's book be false in its facts, disprove them; if false in its reasoning, refute it. But, for God's sake, let us freely hear both sides if we choose. [...]

For context, the source from which I copied this quote (http://www.britannica.com/presidents/article-9116909) is an interesting and short read. I highly recommend it.

  4. [...]If all he wanted was just an apology then why would he bring this issue to the press before bringing it to the teacher himself, [...]

The demand for an apology and for having someone speak to the class to set straight some of Mr. P's misstatements, was made at the meeting between Matthew, Mr. P, and the school principal. That was months before any of this was made public.

  5. Okay, this I couldn't help but laugh at a bit, simply because...yes, I'm aware that the soldier died. But the soldier is dead...what exactly would you have people do? I dare say he wouldn't really notice whether or not people were paying attention to his corpse.

Oops. Poor choice of phrasing, Strife. I, and anyone willing to be honest with themselves, will recognize that what you're laughing at is the poster's apparent implication that one should expect this news to stir the same kind of ongoing debate as the Paszkiewicz business. But this will not prevent the lying bigots on this board from seizing this opportunity to accuse you of laughing at a soldier's death.

  6. P.S.  If you're going to create such a controversy in your town, you should expect to get the butt end of criticisms.  There ARE two sides to this argument after all, and if you can't stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen.

There are two sides to EVERY argument. That does not mean they're equally valid.

I know if I had done something similar, I wouldn't be surprised to get threats from people, they've got just as much of a right to be pissed at you as you do to be pissed at your teacher.  It's not like you're untouchable either.....

If by "right" you mean "justification", then no, they don't. The teacher is the wrongdoer here, not the ones who caught him at it. There is no valid justification for being as pissed at the LaClairs as at the teacher (and administration and school board).

And if by "right" you actually mean "right" (as in "inalienable rights", not as in "right vs. wrong", "turn right at the stop sign" or "right wing"), well, a right to get pissed does not equal a right to threaten. The ones making the threats are wrong. Not the ones targeted by them.

  7. Bill Gates is an atheist--to use Microsoft software while whining about atheism is the height of hilarious hypocrisy and stupidity. So, tell me...what operating system did you write the post I am replying to you on? :)

Perhaps he uses one of the many Christian inspired operating systems, such as:

    Linux,

    Margie: How about religion?

Linus: Hmmm, completely a-religious--atheist. I find that people seem to think religion brings morals and appreciation of nature. I actually think it detracts from both. It gives people the excuse to say, ``Oh, nature was just created'', and so the act of creation is seen to be something miraculous. I appreciate the fact that, ``Wow, it's incredible that something like this could have happened in the first place.'' I think we can have morals without getting religion into it, and a lot of bad things have come from organized religion in particular. I actually fear organized religion because it usually leads to misuses of power.

    or Mac.

    Comment from E-mail:

I was reading that Gates, Linus T. and Larry Ellison are all atheist or agnostic. The article made no mention of you or Steve Jobs. My question is, are you a man of faith and do you think that Mr. Jobs is believes in God?

    Woz:

I am also atheist or agnostic (I don't even know the difference). I've never been to church and prefer to think for myself. I do believe that religions stand for good things, and that if you make irrational sacrifices for a religion, then everyone can tell that your religion is important to you and can trust that your most important inner faiths are strong.

Steve Jobs may be an informal fan of Eastern religions but it's never obvious in him and I never heard of him regularly attending a church. That's only a guess.

  8. I've noticed that the front KOTW page has one of those scripts that pops up an alert with copyright information, undoubtedly in an attempt to prevent people from stealing pictures or looking at the source or whatever.

What browser are you using? I'm using Seamonkey and have never seen what you're describing. I get the normal context menu, and my Radial Context pie menu plugin also works without interference.

(Pie menus are similar in effect to mouse gestures, but with a visual aspect so they're easier to learn and can be navigated visually to find options that are not used often enough to commit to motor memory)
