  1. Sorry ....I didn't have to work, but I'm situated in North Carolina, hence the lack of a parade near-by.....but I'm glad you could attend and enjoy yourself. The family that are still in the area said the parade was terrific and bigger than ever....nice going.
  2. To all my fellow Irishmen.........and all you wanabees........have a safe and joyful St. Patricks Day.......sorry I missed the parade.

  4. Something that some people will not understand is the affection we have for our hometown even though we moved away. For whatever reason some of us were forced to relocate. I would venture to say that all,or at the very least, most of the people I grew up with are no longer living in Harrison. That being said, this does not prevent us from being concerned for the well-being of the people who have remained. It's hurtful to us to read about all the animosities that have permeated the town in the recent years. That's not to say there wasn't differences in our time , but perhaps we had a better way of dealing with them. The 40's, 50's and 60's were just not so confrontational as today. We seemed to go along to get along. Perhaps some of that should be re-introduced today. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that even tho we're not longer a part of Harrison we still care. Thanks for letting an old man put in his two cents.
  5. Venezuelan dictator Chavez has made it his sworn duty to bury the USA. Yet I've not seen any movement on the part of our citizenry to answer back by boycotting the Chevron gas stations in this nation. I may be wrong, but I'm led to believe that these gas outlets are an extension of the governent of Venezuela. The USA buys almost 40% of the crude pumped out of the Venezuela oil wells. Again I might be wrong but how many other countries can make that statement. OK ....so now we stop buying his gas and lets see what the results bring.
  6. Very nice program....it'll be interesting to see how long it takes the nay sayers to knock this worthwhile endeavor. God bless
  7. Thank you to all veterans for your service to our country.......a job well done
  8. In honor of veterans day I'd like to take the time to thank ALL veterans for their service and offer my condolences to all families who had relatives that made the supreme sacrifice. Our country was built on the courage and fortitude of our military..........a job well done.

    the parade

As you can see from my screen-name I no longer live in Harison, but maybe some credit should be given to Mary Hoey for stirring-up the citizenry to do something nice for the kids on halloween.....was it not her who started the discussion of a parade on this forum?.....nice work Mary....Dad would've been proud.

    a question

If memory serves me, there was a "Kearny Yacht Club" situated at the bottom of Bergen Ave. in the area of what is now the archery range. It was across from "The Old Soldiers Home" ruins that is now the bunny hill. I'm not sure but it may have also been called "The Barge". Hope this helps. O'Hara's was further up Passaic Ave.
  11. It's really too bad you didn't identify yourself. I'd be the first to shake your hand and have a cup of coffee with you. Sorrily many who read your post will cubby-hole you as some kind of fanatical protectionist. However your points are well intended and taken. Perhaps some who identify with your descriptions will actually take to heart your intended meanings and try to assilimate into society as an immigrant who is grateful for the right to work and better themselves and their families. I doubt that will happen, but ever the optomist, I can only hope. Thank you for the opportunity to engage in a discussion that affects ALL citizens on the USA.
  12. Thank you for the compliment. Some were not so kind. From some of the results I've seen and the turmoil at QP would indicate that the karma might have already turned.
  13. Mary, In spite of the snide remarks from some of the less informed and in spite of the fact I'm no longer a resident of Harrison, I totally agree with you and your feeling re:the parade. As a young man I always enjoyed the festivities and as a young parent I really enjoyed the excitement my children expressed when I'd mention the Halloween parade was in the near future. I know it's impossible to turn the clock back to those simpler days but perhaps a small thing like a parade could open eyes to chance that maybe we can. Remember the window decorating contest that was also a part of Halloween?
  14. Today is Memorial Day and I'd like to thank ALL veterans for their service. I'd especially like to thank the families who had members who made the supreme sacrifice . We sometimes overlook the sacrifices the families also have to endure. My service time is behind me, but for some it's yet to begin. Let's take the time to offer our gratitude for those men and women who put their lives on the line so that we can opinionate our feeling on forums such as this and many others. God Bless you all. Thank you

Brings to mind 56'-57' season.......0-22. As a matter of fact in Sayerville we only scored 2 points in the first half and the coach, Shields, walked off and we coached ourselves the second half.....Some things never change....thank God for soccer.
  16. Jackie, My wish is that my kids have the same love and respect for me that you and your sisters have for Kevin. As someone who grew-up with your dad I can only say that he was and is a gentleman. I can honestly say that in all the years I knew Kevin I never heard him say one disparaging word against anyone. We all know what a great athlete he was but the metal of the man was much greater. Hold your rememberances close to your heart and pass his legacy on to your chikldren. Let them never forget their grandfather was a MAN first.
  17. I'd like to get a discussion going re:the recruiting of high school athletes. I read the article in The Observer regarding the basketball team at Queen of Peace. It seems that two young men transfered from St. Anthony's in Jersey City to play for QP. I'm trying to understand why someone would transfer from one of the elite programs in the COUNTRY to a program that, at best, has had mediocre success in a much less competetive environment. I'm sure if the question was posed to the AD at QP , the answer would be "we don't recruit", but you'd be hard-pressed to convince many people of that. It might be time for parents, who are paying to the tune of $5K-$8K a year to educate their children , to ask just that question. Is it any wonder AD's from other schools are upset with this policy. Further, when I was in high school, which is entirely too long ago to matter, a tranferred student had to sit for a year before becoming eligible to participate in athletics. The only caviate to that policy was when transferring from private to public schools, then a student could compete immediately. I'm not pointing fingers, but only trying to get opinions of this practice.
  18. If I'm not mistaken Sam Dente came from Kearny, but that still doesn't detract from his accomplishments. As a matter of fact there were many less major league teams then so it was harder to make it to the "bigs" in those days. However he did have a connection to Harrison in that he owned The Ship Ahoy tavern on the corner of 4th and Hamilton Sts. And if memory severs me right Joe Dobosh deceased Harrison Policeman played with Sam at KHS.
  19. It never ceases to amaze me how this forum deteriorates on any given subject.
  20. Well said......even tho I am from the "Hoey" era, of which I'm very proud, the accomplishments of Ray Lucas were outstanding. Unfortunately I moved out of town before Ray had his day in the sun and I never got to see him proform, but it brought a smile to my face everytime it was mentioned he came from a small blue-collar town in Northern New Jersey called Harrison. We should be proud to have produced two outstanding athletes, just as Kearny should be proud of producing Meola, Harkes and Ramos.
  21. What a great idea.....finally something constructive on this forum. Perhaps a groundswell could be started to at least get some discussion going about dedicating the stadium in his honor. Good luck
  22. Some time ago a forum was started re:the best athletes. Well each generation had their favorites and justifyingly so. But with the passing of Kevin Hoey we lost the best of the best. Had things gone differently we would probably be honoring him with a parade down the Avenue and a huge gathering at Holly Cross. But instead he'll be quitely laid to rest and the family will grieve in private. If it's not too much to ask, how about paying your respects to the family at Mulligan's on Friday, 11/24. Good-bye Kev and peace be with you.

    Nancy Pelosi ???

I guess it's too much to expect you accept defeat with dignity. This only shores up the "mean-spirited" image the GOP has fostered since George The Elder went down in defeat. Perhaps it's too much to ask for time to see what will happen before you start throwing stones.

    Kearny Issues

Now there's a novel idea...........Maybe people will take up the mantle and do something to make this site a little more enjoyable. I agree that some of the discussions are not revelant , not only to Kearny but the entire area.
