Guest NewGirl
I'm researching towns/cities close to NYC and was wondering what it's like living in Kearny? Crime, demographics, etc. Is the commute somewhat easy?
Guest Guest
Hi Newgirl, If you've been reading the posts on this website, I'm surprised your haven't set your sights on the west coast as far from Kearny as you can. The truth be told, Kearny is a pretty good town. The crime rate is pretty low (I guess, I've never had a crime committed against me or anyone I know well). It is a diverse middle class-working class community which has always been a mecca for immigrants. When I was a kid, most families were "just off the boat" Irish and Scottish, today the immigrants are from South America and Asia. It is a small town with small town politics (lots of complaining, very little "do anything about it") The commute to NYC isn't too bad. There is a bus that goes directly into Port Authority or you can go into Harrison and take the PATH into the city from there. I think we're 7 miles outside the city (If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will point that out very soon!)
Guest Guest
You would be better off living in Harrison. It has the Path Station where you could walk to and catch the train to the WTC or 33rd St. Plus it has a better Police and Fire Department then Kearny and is a lot safer. Guest What a Dummy!
You would be better off living in Harrison. The only truth to your whole statement is about the PATH. Are you an Idiot? Better off? Safer? Better Police and Fire? Ignorance is Bliss!

Why does every post end up being a chance to bash the KPD and KFD? I think i will start a topic just so people can bash whomever they want without having to put up with any disrupting nonsense like the issue being disgussed. Guest cymbaline
No! I freaking hated it thats why i got the hell out of that hell hole. The schools are over crowded, most of the kids barely speak english, and the police are lazy but when they are awakened from thier lazy state....they are abusive. Kearny needs more Dunkin Donuts like North Arlington....for the sake of the KPD. Hmm go ahead bash me all you want...most likely I won't see the reply....I only visit this forum like every 5 months when Im absolutely bored. Guest Guest
Obviously the prior response comes from someone with problems. Their kids probably can't read - Kearny has a really great public school system. Not every kid excells and not every teacher is Maria Montessore, but most kids do well and are prepared for college, technical school or a decent job when they graduate, and most teachers that I've come across are extremely well educated, experienced, and are in the classroom because that is the profession they chose. Perhaps the writer's own children have only a fleeting command of the English language themselves? The police are not lazy - they are extremely attentive and responsive when called. Abusive? I guess you'd have to be in a position to be on the wrong side of the law to experience that if it would be true - I (and most people) wouldn't know about that. More Dunkin Donuts? Why? Kearny has several excellent bakeries and a new one opening on Halstead & Kearny Aves. pretty soon, I think (as well as one Dunkin Donuts). People are generally only as happy and satisfied with their surrounds as they are with themselves.
Guest Guest
Hello newgirl, I'm a Kearny resident and commute to NYC on a daily basis. A little bit about Kearny, I personally think it's a great town and has (at least visually improved tremendously) over the pst 5-7 years. A lot of small parks were added or redone, the main Avenue has been completely redone, and is just a clean town. Disregard the comment about Harrison being safer than Kearny, not sure where he gets his data, not that Harrison is any less, but I just don't agree with the comments above. Basically, the trend in Kearny now seems to be, buy a house, completely renovate it or just knock it down and build a new one. A lot of pride is being shown..always nice to see. As for the commute to NYC, it is amazingly cheap and convenient, best bet is to drive or take the bus to Harrison jump on the Path train and your all set..... yet when you come home you feel like your hours away from NYC. I hope you'll look at Kearny a little closer and see the wonderful diversity this small town has to offer.
