Come on, comparing slavery to this situation of whether to call it a holiday tree or a Christmas Tree. That's a stretch even for Paul.

That's a misrepresentation and a misanalysis. The reference was to segregation, not slavery. That's the misrepresentation.

And it wasn't a comparison to segregation either. It was an illustration of how people in the majority come to think they are entitled to special treatment, and become blind to the minority's existence. Just because another instance of the same thing involved an atrocity doesn't mean it's off limits for discussion. Or are you promoting right wing political correctness?

People who enjoy special privileges don't like having those privileges challenged, or even pointed out, but it's all true. Do you really think Paul is the only person who understands these things?

When did we become a nation of Constitutional lawyers?

We didn't but it would be nice if Americans understood the Constitution. Right wingers don't hesitate to pull a copy out of their pocket when they think it suits them. They should read it and actually follow it.

When did we become a nation of ignoramuses who mock the Constitution?

You guys do realize that the entire article leading to this thread exchange is basically internet/email spam, don't you? The attribution to Stein about this article was from 2005, more than 6 years ago now.

Also, at no point has the White House referred to Christmas Trees as holiday trees:

Whatever you celebrate this year (or chose not to celebrate) enjoy your time with family and friends and don't beleive everything you read on teh internet.

What you're really saying is that you want Americans to understand your interpretation of the Constitution. Please site the passage where it says a Christmas Tree should now be called a Holiday Tree.

Something tells me the Founders would be shocked at where we've taken The Constitution.

And you do realize we're talking about the administration of Kearny calling it a Holiday Tree?

Wow..so a Cop, or a Firefighter, or a Librarian saying "Merry Christmas" is the Establishment of a National Church???? (hint..THAT is what is prohibited in the First amendment..the ESTABLISHMENT of a "Church of the United States")

No. Insisting that others call it that would be a special privilege. This argument is all about your insistence that everyone should call it that, and that it's an offense of government calls it a holiday tree. You're the ones forcing the issue and we're not letting you ram it down our throats.

You seem to think you are entitled to special privilege because you are in the majority. That's true with public policy but not with religion. Religion is each person's individual right. You only want that right for yourself, not for others.

I don't need hints. I understand the Constitution just fine. There is no case that I know of challenging the right of any of those governmental employees to say Merry Christmas. If the police department or the fire department or the public library tried to force the issue to promote or denigrate any religious perspective, then it would violate the Constitution. That is not what happened, or what generated this topic.

The issue here is whether a municipality or other agency of government is best advised to call it a holiday tree, thereby including everyone in the celebration. The answer to that question is yes. Kearny did the right thing. You can post back and try to change the issue again if you want to but if you have to change the issue to make your point, then obviously your point isn't defensible on its own.

According to Paul and folks like him, yes it is.

If your argument is so strong, why do you need to distort the other person's position to make your point?

Of course there isn't a case. That's because it's insane to call a Christmas tree a holiday tree for any reason.

I guess the nativity next to the holiday tree must be killing you.
