Guest Guest
The date has been set. You must decide to retire in one month, BEFORE THE FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND, or you HAVE TO STAY and deal with the new concessions if you are a state employee. IF you stay, say goodbye to 70%, 4% of longevity, and $455/month for healthcare starting that following week, for life. To the Fireman/teacher combos, thats an extra $910/month. In my opinion, I say the majority of people who can leave but won't because of ther superEGOS and cannot survive in this world without saying, " I'm the boss," and are making a big mistake. If you cannot leave, good luck because the remaining HFD, in my opinion, will be terminated, ASAP after the private ambulace Company will start at a bucket load of savings and that will officially end the HFD paid fire department forever. If ****** **and ** tell the Mayor to do it, it's over ASAP for the Frat house and a few cops might get layed-off temporarily because Harrison cannot exist any better than Camden without a 40 to 50 man Police Department. McDonough and the clowncil will try to go to 20 cops because of McDonoughs hatred and desire to screw the cops for turning in Tanski after he did dog tricks and begged the Police not to do so, but for anyone layed-off they will be called back within about 2 weeks. It's just some extra vacation time. The cops will be O.K., but as for the fireman who have less than 25 years in service, I absolutely and unconditionally LOVE TO SEE THEM SULK OUT OF TOWN FOR $8 jobs loading and unloading trucks. What kind of EGO can you have when you do grunt work. It's honest, hard working men and the soft HFD frat boyz could not handle the physical and emotional breakdown. It is such a thrill to me that I WILL be having that barbecue lunch with my friends around the built-in pool SERVING STEAKS AND LOBSTER TAILS as was pushed in my face 20 times. Guest Guest
Who is this person who is happy when someone loses their job. He must have had a miserable childhood. I think it's the same person who was writing demeaning letters to supervisors a few years ago. I think he is a disgruntled Patrolman. The HPD should not have any layoffs or demotions. They are now working shorthanded. With the addition of more housing and the Red Bull Stadium, more officers are needed not less. Having said that, I believe that if you have over 25 years on the job you should retire. Raises are going to be less then 2% and you will begin paying up to 30% of your health benefits. Do the math and get out while you can. The merging of the HPD and ENPD should be done as soon as possible. The HFD and the ENFD should also merge. Guest Guest
Maybe you do not not know how to read. I am a major league fan of the Harrison Police Department. You could not find a better group of Officers anywhere. My reference as to a waste of money was directed at the Harrison Fire Department which has consumed almost $100 million dollars since blockhead fireman lover took over as Mayor in 1995. In my opinion, what a mistake. I had suspected some type of ******** ******** between a fireman and himself for many years, hence the hands off (at work at least), give them everything they ask for policy. Common sense. McGreevy did it. The Mayor is NEVER seen with *** **** in *******, at any ***** as a ******, or just out for a ***** ****. In my opinion, they are together as business partners in crime only. You can have that opinion of your own. I see what I see, and in 16 years have NEVER seen the ********* even ********. Edited May 21, 2011 by KOTW Content. Guest Guest
It's going to be hard for the ENFD and HFD to merge because you are have like a total of 25 with no equiptment to use to get to the fires. Yard sale time.

I agree the HPD should not have any layoffs or demotions if anything they should be figuring out how to hire!! Public Safety is the most important service any municipality offers and should not be shorted in anyway. Unfortunately I can't see ENPD and HPD merging. Explain how East Newark would give up it's 2 per shift in a 1/10th of a square mile town to merge with Harrison to probably pay more and get less protection. Harrison residents that live on streets that have East Newark residents are probably thrilled because at least they have a ENPD driving down there block regularly. This is no knock to the HPD they are doing the best they can with what they have. Time for a few give backs boys. Look what ENPD are making and what you're making. Not saying you don't deserve it just saying times are tough for everyone and we all need to make sacrifices. As for a merge of ENFD and HFD I can't see a merge happening. Why would East Newark do that. They pay peanuts for their FD and they have a good amount of manpower. HFD is being reduced to nothing which is a crying shame. I hear they are also going to a private ambulance service? Is this true? That’s terrible because it was a good revenue generator for the HFD. There has to be a way to keep this service and not take a huge hit on the budget. It costs Harrison something like about 1.5 million a year to staff 1 ladder (or 1 engine) on a 24 hour basis. McDonough time to pick up the phone call up Mayor Smith offer him a substantial amount of money to provide some automatic aid. Offer 500K a year for 1 Ladder (or 1 Engine, whatever the fire minds figure out is best) to respond to all of Harrisons calls. With that money Harrison saves and receives no less protection, East Newark can hire 2 guys M-F during business hours to man it, increase their fire budget to offer more services and East Newark would still save some money. HFD could then also keep their ambulances. They would have to shut down Cleveland Ave but I think we all know that’s coming. Wouldn't be much of an issue anyway with an Engine coming from 7th street and a Ladder from Sherman Ave. (Or vice versa) I know there will be union issues but it doesn’t seem like Harrison FMBA is willing to give anything back to protect all these jobs. Guest Guest
Lets review. I have always the stand that there should be many more Police Officers on the streets of Harrison. When further cuts are made, the criminal element will surely move into those ares. I have also said that Harrison can be serviced just as well with a volunteer Fire Department. There would be no difference i service with the sddition of a volunteer ambulance system. That has always been my drastic cost savings measure. OK. Guest Guest
Demeaning letters? I don't know what the heck that is all about if Cops or Fireman were getting some demeaning letters, but it sounds quite interesting. That should be looked into if it pertains to anything going on now. To be crazy for years is not good at all. I would love to read one of those. I can surmise that, in my opinion, the town is in much worse financial shape than anyone thinks and there is going to be a lot of finger pointing going on soon. The town can get by rather easily without a fire dept., but if you start calling the cops and there is no one to answer your call that is some very serious stuff. The Mayro and Council better worry about people getiing hurt by criminal actions rather than their heartfelt desire to keep pumping money into that useless fire department. Without 50 or 60 cops, the town is going to be a free for all. How is anyone gonna justify spending million$ on a fire dept. when one lawsuit due to complete negligence of public safety hits litigation. Once that starts, its never gonna stop. That will be the end all of all. If you cannot see that train coming down the tracks you are very stupid. Better dump that FD and start geting serious about crime in Harrison because much more person on person crime is on the way. You shall see my prediction. Trust me I listen to a lot of the southern Bergen county/west Essex county towns that use a volunteer ambulance doesn't work to well. Tone goes out for a person with chest pains... 2 minutes later another tone goes out... "Need additional manpower"... 2 minutes later... "We need a driver to respond"... hopefully 2 minutes later they are out the door... North Arlington has paid EMS during most hours, hell they may be paid on site 24/7 by now... Kearny ambulance couldn't get enough volunteers that’s why they are paid now... You have to be nuts, a paid ambulance that’s the last thing I would want to see anywhere... If you are going to have a paid ambulance you better darn well have a paid FD that respond as first responders so they could hook you up to that AED and save your darn life. The remaining HFD guys after the next round of retirements need to realize that the town needs to do something to help protect them, imagine pulling up to a working fire with 6 firefighters and no BC!!! Guest Guest
Don't look to the Mayor and council to solve a problem that they have created. Remember the hotel which was going to put Harrison's tax payers on easy street? Then it was the stadium, then the new apartment developments. Who is on Easy Street? How about Jim Doran and his $225,000 job. He makes more than the governor. How about Dolaghan and Family? Their combined family total payroll in Harrison is over a million dollars. The Mayor and Bennit both got to retire from PV with pensions. Most of the people on the council couldn't find a job in the private sector. Most have no education or skills. The problem is not the cops, firemen, teachers, or town workers it's our inept leadership who has only succeed in enriching themselves, their friends and families

Guest Guest
Yeah disband the fire department, the HUGE savings you each tax payer will see is about $10 less a month in there property taxes. Wow $10 to have people in the fire house 24/7 365 as opposed to amateurs who might be around to respond to a call and have the response time doubled. You people make a ton of sense. Leave ALL of the public safety alone!
Guest Guest
Shutting down the Wilhelm HFD is the way to go. The private ambulance company, of which Harrison is already taking bids, can work out of the Cleveland Ave. building. The only thing you saw the ambulance as was a good revenue genererator. I thought it was about saving lives? The ambulance part was the only strong point. The Fire fighting part was the joke. Every town who took over the primary role when they got to town got wild laughs about the Harrison attempts at fighting a fire. No primary searches, putting up the ladder too far to reach the building on fire and arguing in front of everyone over who was going up the ladder, and the 350 pound jelly roll of a man standing half a block away telling everyone who would listen about how much O.T. he was making. Guest Guest
Someone said that they think it's a shame that a person is sick if they think that it's a good thing when someone looses their job. Well maybe that person wouldn't feel that way if the person who is supposed to be working are checking in and out of the hotel during the day with their boyfriend or girlfriend. Is that what their job description is? Getting a free of charge room for a few hours when they are supposed to be working a mid six figure job? I am so and so, I was told the rooms are availabale. Disgusting! Don't let me catch you on camera or there goes your job and wonderfull photos of you entering and exiting the hotel with your boyfriend/girlfriend when you are married. I will personally deliver those photos to your home and spouse. Got your attention? No boss even knows enough that someone is gone for several hours to check if they are doing their job? Thats professional? A BIG part of the problem is that BOTH the police and fire chief have stood by and watched without a fight as their manpower was butchered. Both chiefs submitted letters to the mayor and the legal team indicating that they would support the layoffs, demotions and forced retirements of their men, just as long as they are left alone. The police chief had his lawyer brother write a letter threatening a lawsuit against the town if he was touched (of course the town blinked) and the fire chief also submitted a letter supporting the downsizing. There are some pretty hefty salaries in the town hall that should have been considered before you cut into public safety. Some people are making sick money, some jobs were expanded from part to full time (with benefits) while their spouses are also commanding six figure salaries. I hope the taxpaying citizens of Harrison realize now that the mayor & most of the council, Murray, Paulie Z (yes, two attorneys on the payroll. The first one gets a 1/4 ******* bucks and the second gets $176,000) and the police and fire chiefs don't give a crap about you. They just threw your safety to the wolves. Remember that the next time you need a cop or a fireman to come to your aid. You're the taxpayer. You have a say! See how fast the mayor tabled the sale of the Franklin Av. property when some taxpayers stood up and called him to task. You should be doing the same when it comes to your safety and well being as a resident...Speak Out! If you go to the 3rd floor and look around, you can save as much, if not more, by cutting out the fat up there as you would by imploding the police and fire depts. Also heard that Murrays wife was listed as the states biggest double dipper in the NJ Gannett papers. Getting a kings randsom for her work with the Harrison and Elizabeth Board of Educations. Guest Guest
The Mayor and Council will NEVER get rid of the the eyesore money pit Fire Department in my opinion because that is where all of their frinds and families work. The town would charge you $30,000.00 a year in taxes solely for the fire department to kep those $3000.00/a week checks going. Public safety menas NOTHING to them. If they could get by with just having one cop at the Police Hallway to take reports after your beating, robbery, rape, whatever they would. That's the facts. If the whole town had to go on welfare to pay the Fire Department so be it. I have been saying this for three years and you are finally realizing it's been the truth all along. Too late now. The RICH birds are all flying south and within year the town will look like the Bronx in the 1970's. Coulda, woulda, shoulda, but didn't. You are right about one thing. Harrison can not afford to lay off Police Officers. But you are wrong about another. Harrison would not be better off with a volunteer department. What works in East Newark does not mean it would work in Harrison. Harrison FD is a lot buisier then you think. The residents aren't better off with a volunteer fd. Far from it. Man power should remain around 40 odd guys in Harrison. They should have 8 guys on at least per shift. reduction down to 24 firefighters is outright scary. Harrison Tax payers wake up your fire insurance will sky rocket! Sure maybe the two sides need to get together and figure out how to make some savings but it can't start with lowering manpower to 24 firefighters. That is insanity!
