NEWARK, N.J. (WABC) -- A doctor is one of a dozen people arrested in New Jersey as part of an oxycodone crackdown.

Authorities said internal medicine specialist Dr. Michael F. Durante, 56, of Montclair, allegedly wrote illegal prescriptions for oxycodone.

Durante was charged along with Andre Domando, 46, of Nutley; Lawrence J. Gebo, 62, Tristen M. Ambrosino, 27, and Daniel J. Lally, 28, of Belleville; Matin P. Rinaldi, 63, and Marianna Colucci, 56, of Bloomfield; Michael P. Scherer, 51, of Montclair; Melvin Fernandez, 27, Gregory Gavini, 33, and Brian J. Renkart, 39, of Harrison; and Michael J. Corrao, 22, of Allendale.

Oxycodone is the active ingredient in brand name pills such as Oxycontin, Roxicodone and Percocet. It has a high potential for abuse.

Authorities said Durante issued prescriptions to co-conspirators for drugs containing oxycodone,

The prescriptions were filled at various pharmacies located in and around Essex County, and redistributed by others

Renkart also supplied oxycodone pills for distribution to co-conspirators.

Durante wrote the prescriptions in exchange for cash payments and items of value. At one time prescribing Domando more than 1,000 pills in a 10-day period.

One of those arrested, Lawrence J. Gebo, is a retired Newark police officer. He allegedly plotted to provide Durante and one of his family members with "gold" Fraternal Order of Police cards, which typically are reserved for the immediate family members of police officers.

Authorities said Durante also provided excessive prescriptions for oxycodone in exchange for cash, including from an undercover DEA agent he believed to be a patient. Durante knew the pills were to be redistributed, and instructed the undercover to bring the prescriptions to different pharmacies to avoid detection.

Durante was recorded discussing the street cost of the medication he was prescribing, prosecutorss said. For example, he told a co-conspirator that the pills would resell for from $1,000 to $1,200 per bottle, and that - based on the number of prescriptions Durante was providing - the individual should be realizing a $20,000 monthly income.

Durante and the others face up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine if convicted.

Indictment charges 3 Harrison men and 9 others, including Montclair doctor, with conspiring to distribute oxycodone in and around Essex County

Three Harrison men are among a dozen people, including a doctor, charged with conspiracy in an oxycodone distribution ring that allegedly allowed at least one co-conspirator to rake in as much as $20,000 per month, officials said.

Melvin Fernandez, 27, Gregory Gavini, 33, and Brian J. Renkart, 39, all of Harrison, were charged along with Dr. Michael F. Durante, 56, of Montclair, and others in the indictment unsealed yesterday, announced U.S. Attorney Paul J Fishman. Those charged face up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine, if convicted, officials said.

I guess all those overtime hours plowing snow still wasn't enough money.

How come none of you people with the big mouths didn't mention the 3 Harrison men were arrested in Newark for drugs. There was a big drug bust of 1 doctor and 11 men, 3 of which are from Harrison and 2 work on the town. One of them hold 2 positions on the town. Now tell me the town employees should not take drug tests. They were arrested for selling Oxycodone. It was on Eyewitness news. They face up to 20 years in prison plus up to one million dollars in fines. Do you still think they shuls hold positions on the town?

ABSOLUTELY NOT, this person was working in the school system in the evening, and dealing with kids there, hope he was not selling to kids. He most definetly must go, we cannot have a drug dealer just as we could not have a child predetor.

And Renkart also worked in the High School, seen him there sitting with the kids report card night. We cannot accept this behavior in our little town. Shame on you

EVERYONE on the town payroll should be subject to random hair follicle drug testing. I'm only been saying that for the last three years. That includes the Mayor, council AND fire department all whom efuse to get tested. Fighting against drug testing says it all.

I see the moderator has stopped any postings of anybody that has a disparing word against any fireman but continues to let them target anyone they choose. I figured out a long time ago that the moderator was an employee of most likely Harrison, maybe Kearny, at a six figure job and was being told what he can and cannot post and what names, positions or activities of questionable moral terpitude can never be exposed. If not, no more six figure job for the moderator by the Mayor and council. It has become apparent that he favors certain groups, in this case the fire department. I questioned why there was NO drug testing for any one other than the cops for a long time, over and over. I never got a reply, NOT ONCE. I persevered and was called stupid names, the subjects were changed, but the issue was NOT to be addressed on this forum as ordered, I imagine. I wonder how many other residents were also concerned about drug activity in town and had their articles NOT posted? I would think quite a bit!! They even reward the fireman with a pension for life as high as $75,000.00 a year for using or distribution of drugs. Thats a great example for the kids. OMG.

The town employee who was arrested was not from a fire department, but it does go to show you what's really going in the town that has no crime. We don't need the cops, right? None of those thousands of pills sold were bought in Harrison, right? Mr. Moderator will now say it's my web site and if you don't like it too bad. Why don't the moderator grow a spine on this issue and let the residents persist and get answers as to why selective groups or individuals are being purposely excluded from drug testing? Is there drug use in the high school? Damn right there is, but this invasion of privacy crap from the teachers, fireman, etc. sets the pace of," we will not be tested." Nobody but the moderator will ever read this, I'm now realizing that, but you should have a conscience as towards the way the High School kids go, which should be AWAY from drugs if you haven't figured it our yet. Concerning the arrested, a felon similar to Tanski who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the residents but was given an enormous pension, your master, the Mayor will say, " he had a heart of gold," remember that one, and transfer him to another dept. THAT would never be posted. Make sure that you make your contribution to the FMBA but don't post anything about that EVERYONE on the town payroll undergoing random hair follicle drug testing INCLUDING the Mayor and Council. We wouldn't want to have the kids thinking that drugs are bad, testing could get a relative or friend fired. That is much more important to protect. Disgracefull.

Dear Guest,

There are a number of posts by you and others (mostly you) that have not been posted. Some of them contain information that has not been confirmed, or is inappropriate or simply too complex to edit with our limited resources. Frankly, KOTW is tired of editing and/or reading posts about the same topic over and over again. I am sure our readers are as well. Simply put, we got your point already. Give it a rest.

As we previously pointed out, it's a free country. You can set up your own website, anonymously or under your own name and post all the information you think appropriate. As it stands, you are posting as a guest, not even as a Member under an anoymous name, and you expect KOTW to just post whatever you put up. That is unrealistic and naive. KOTW has existed for over ten years and this board contains posts dating back to 2003. Our guidelines for posting have not changed. KOTW fosters open discussions but there are limits.

You urge KOTW to "get a spine". KOTW suggests that you follow your own advise and set up your own website under your own name so you can post all of your thoughts and opinions there. KOTW will allow you to post a link through this discussion board to it.

Did the Mayor or anyone on the town council comment on this event and if so what did they have to say about it? Is this guy just going to be transferred to another dept. and keep working on the towns payroll? It's time RIGHT NOW to help end this scourge of drugs in town. The amount of money being made, $315,000.00 a month by these drug dealers, three from Harrison, in my opinion means that a good amount of the pills were sold in Harrison. Drugs do not discriminate to to race, ethnicity, sex, job, social standing, or AGE. The town has to start making examples of these people when caught. They will go to jail because of the volume and amount of money but what is the town doing to send a message to the children that this behavior is unacceptable. It would be naive to think that these drugs are not making it into the high school.

I would say that counts as cracking the asshat across the chops with the Gauntlet, rather than merely tossing it at his feet... Good for YOU KOTW. People seem to forget that they AGREED to abide by certain terms of Service when they began posting here..as a Private Site, YOU have the ultimate say in what gets put on, and what doesnt.

What some folks dont understand is that the OWNER of the site is also culpable to a certain extent for what is published therein. Currently the Atlantic Highlands Herald is embroiled in a civil suit because the owner of THAT forum chose NOT to exercise Editorial control over what was posted, and he is being sued for the Registration information of posters who a local politician has accused of Libel ( The suit is nonsense, I happen to know the owner of the E-paper, and have seen the complaint, but he is still sticking to his guns and fighting the suit, rather than open his records). People forget sometimes that unless they have the foresight to post through Proxy ISP's their identity can be found..relatively easily at that through a Court order. "Internet Anonymous' isnt really all THAT Anonymous at the end of the day when you think about it. IIRC, Before the current owner took over this mess, the previous owner had been subpoenaed to provide ISP information after someone on this board made libelous statements. While the current owner has so far managed to avoid that through his use of editing out names of persons and companies, eventually someone libeled herein is going to have enough rope bought by some of the idiots here to jerk them to the short stop. One does wonder what names will come out in the sunlight then eh?
