Guest Stonejohn
Kearny wouldn't have to demote or layoff anyone if the Police Chief and 2 Deputy Chiefs retired. That would save about 500K. Then put 2 civilians on the desk to replace the Lt. & Patrol officer and that would save more then half their salaries. The KPD is no up to date. They are operating like they did 40 years ago. Change comes very hard for them. A new Chief who is up to date would solve the problem. Take the hint Chief and pull the pin along with the 2 D/Chief brothers.

Guest Guest
You guys need a reality check. NPD just laid off 167. Your pension fund is going broke. The Fed, State and Towns are broke. Everyone who has their time in should retire. Let the young guys stay and takeover.

Sort of like putting gasoline on a fire to put it out dontcha think? The pensions broke because the State has been raiding and not paying into it since the Whitman years, where do you think a huge part of Kearny's budget surplus came from? Almost all of the members of KFD that were eligible to retire have done so. In the past 20 years the Town has reduced KFD by over 30% in manpower, and eliminated 10 promotional positions. The last 7+ they have enjoyed a pension payment "holiday", and in the last 4 have not had to make any pay raises, and in the past year reduced through State Legislation the KFD 2006 salery (the current salery being paid)by 1.5%. And our taxes? Gone up every year haven't they? jus sayin
Guest Guest
If I read the Observer , the Kearny PBA has promised to take a wage freeze next year, pay toward their health benefits and try to get people to retire. They also will accept comp time in lieu of OT. That's anoble thing to do. The 167 NPD Officers got laid off because the Newark FOP refused to make any concessions. So, the top brass in the KPD should do the right thing and pull the pin. They are not needed. A new Chief is.
Guest Guest
The Kearny PBA did the right thing and its up to the Kearny Mayor and Council to take them up on it. It also would be great if the top brass retired. They have been there long enough. It's time for new leadership to bring the KPD into the 21St. century. Like wanting comp time instead of overtime? Hello! It requires OT to replace guys off on comp time. How about some meaningful give-backs like a 10% salary cut, 50% reduction in clothing allowance and paying 20% of healthcare. Make this offer and you'll save jobs. Man up.
