The arbitrator awarded Kearny firemen a 17.25% increase during the greatest recession since the Great Depression and you want the Kearny taxpayers to just pay it out and have the average fireman salary be $90,000 a year? That increase ADDS $1,700,000 MORE a year, EVERY year, that the taxpayer has to pay for firemen. How can you not appeal that?

Blaming the lawyers and the elected officials won't work any more. You're making way too much off of the taxpayer.

Give back your increase to the Kearny taypayer.

Forget his small salary, why doesn't the part time mayor and council give back their medical coverage for them and their families. How much would that save the town? How many thousands of dollars would be saved by them not getting full medical coverage for meeting once a month?

Kearny doesn't have the industries in town that they had years ago. Kearny should be a volunteer fire department, just like North Arlington and Lyndhurst have.

Please post all the info on the contract since you have the knowledge. The town did appeal this contract and the state (not the fd) awarded this as a fair contract based on Kearny's financials given by the town. The fire dept was only awarded this increase because they have been without a contract for years. This contract is what the town (mayor and council) offered. The FD wanted a few extras which were given back to help the town. This was awarded by Gov. Christie's appointed attorneys and arbitrators. Also, this contract still leaves our FD in the lower half of paid depts based on population and area of responsibility. And please tell me what increase this will have on the taxpayer? Our essential services (police and fire) make up a very small portion of our taxes. Now think about this, If the town gets rid of every fireman, will your taxes go down? I can promise you that they wont. The only thing that will happen is that we will all continue to pay our taxes and receive less services for them. So that is actually an increase in our taxes. And since this contract hasnt been given to the FD yet the town hasnt spent a dime and is still having budget issues. So now what is the problem?

My problem is you not dealing with the facts.

Facts:

Kearny Firefighter average salary of $90,000

Plus 24 Kearny Fire Captains making $140,000 a year

$14 million a year for Kearny Fire Department paid for by Kearny taxpayers.

If these are not facts, then tell us what you think the numbers are and I'll check the arbitrator's decision posted on the state web site.

You are looking at future numbers (the town has the right to appeal). Now look at facts. The average fireman will not be making 90k that is for top step guys with many years on the job. The average fireman will average closer to 65k because there are more newer guys than older ones on the job (nj.com/bythenumbers) So take a step back and look at something else. How long have the fireman been without a contract? 4 years i believe per the arbitrators remarks. So for the last 4 years they have been taking ZERO's 0%, thats right not having a contract equates to a 0% increase. Wait i am wrong they have actually been paying the 1.5% into their medical. So lets do the math, 0% increase minus the 1.5% into benefits so that equals a negative 1.5%. Have you given a negative 1.5% back to your company? Have you gone 4 years (during a good economy) without a raise. If the fireman havent been given a raise in 4 years why have your taxes been going up? Lets look at the big picture. The FD is a small blip in the budget of this poorly managed town. If you want to talk excess lets look at the BOE and we can find some real waste.

Twenty-four captains is crazy; as is their salary. Do the salaries include their pensions, health care, clothing allowance, etc.? I heard we have 24 captains because the guy that scored the lowest on the test (a relative a fireman who is influential in town), to be made a captain, the town had to promote everyone above him who had taken the test to the level of captain. We got more captains than is necessary. An average pay of 90 thousand is also nuts for a fireman in this town.

We can not afford 14 million for people sleeping and eating on our dime. How many firemen/captains have other jobs and use the firehouse for sleeping--switching shifts with others to get their day's free to work another job? Like was mentioned above, we do not have industry in this town like we did 60 or 70 years ago. Aren't there town with a few paid firemen and the rest are volunteers? That sounds good to me.

I think the facts also include the fact that you're a typical jealous cop that realizes too late they should have taken the FF exam instead of the PD exam.

Why don't you mention the Sgt's, Lieu's, Capt's and DC's on the PD? There's no room for cutting there?

Your bitterness is eating you up, just do your (well paid) job and shut up.

Why does Fire always turn on Police when justifiying their salaries?

This post started because the charge was made that the town wasted money on appealing the arbitrator' award of salary increases to Kearny firemen. The response was that the award of 17.25% increase was too expensive for the Kearny taxpayer. Was the average salary number wrong for Kearny firemen or captains? I'm thinking if it was you would have pointed it out.

2Smart, considering your history of postings on this site in support of Republicans and fiscal conservatism, I find it extremely ironic that you're defending Kearny firemen salaries. Voting for Christie and Republicanism means cutting public spending. You didn't think that would mean YOUR salary and pension and benefits? Really??

That salary is not correct. It does not include pensions. Nor Health Care (they do pay 1.25% basically nothing but is more then the past). They no longer have a clothing allowance. (At least I don't think so, I am pretty sure they gave that up in their last contract.)

We have 24 captains because. (Simple Math here)

6 Rigs - (2 Ladders and 4 Engines)

1 Captain for each = 6 Per shift.

4 Shifts...

6 x 4 =?????

You guessed it! 24! Now lets stop the rumors.

That would be 24 times $150,000 salary = $3,600,000 a year for Captains in Kearny Fire Department. What does health insurance and pension and overtime add to that number, another $2,000,000?

As long as we're exploring ways to save money with our public safety personnel, how about we hire a

private security firm to patrol the town as our eyes and ears. When they see something suspicious they can report it over their police radios. A reduced number of cops would be needed to respond to these reports, saving oodles of money in salary and pension costs. What say you, FD hater??

The only person ASSuming that the poster you are referring to is a cop 2Smart, is YOU. You may not believe this..but then again I honestly dont give a rat's Posterior WHAT you think or believe. One: We dont have an issue with the Award the FMBA got. It wouldnt have BEEN an issue if D'Arco and the Town had negotiated in Good Faith to begin with. Two: The PD has our own problems to deal with. What the FD does, or how they organize is so far below our radar it's not funny. HOWEVER We support them, as they support us with this layoff nonsense. IMO it is INSANITY for the Town to do away with one third of the fire protection for the town by closing one of the 3 uptown Engines. Three: If you want Cop vs Firefighter Drama, go to the Harrison Forum..WE DONT DO THAT HERE. The Police Dept and the Fire Dept in Kearny enjoy a VERY good working relationship. Most of the senior guys in both departments have known each other since childhood, and have been friends for DECADES, nevrmind the cross-family relationships that exist between both departments.

I normally agree with about 90% of what you post..but on this one you are WAY OFF BASE....anf frankly you are sounding like a Damned Democrat since "Divide and Conquer" is THEIR party line.

This is real super ironic. 2smart4u, the man (and apparently fireman) who has championed the fringe right wing on this board on a constant basis is now getting a drubbing from the Republican governor. Oh, there's so much searchable material from 2smart on this board, oh where to begin?

There's 2smart calling Corzine a "tax and spend democrat" or his support of the Tea Party or his demeaning our President and House speaker, or how about this nugget from 2smart:

Arizona is under siege by illegal mexicans running drugs, kidnapping and murdering U.S. citizens, Comrade zerO ignores it so the people of Arizona try to defend themselves and are called racists by a foreigner and is applauded by the Loony Left Socialists in Washington. The Tea Party just gained thousands of new members.

I guess in 2smart's mind the tax dollars that pay the annual $100,000+ in wages, health insurance and pension to a Kearny fireman is good tax and spend Socialism. But every tax dollar spent on other things like making sure everyone else has access to health insurance is bad tax and spend socialism. What hyprocisy!

You know what this means? That 2smart voted for his own demise with Christie in Trenton. That's beyond super irony, that's like uber irony. LOL!

Well said! I do love when people try to create their own controversy. I guess some lives are just dull, so they spice them up. The PD does a great job in this town, and deserve credit, as does the FD. If you think public safety is a luxury item, well, we can all have an opinion, but I believe it to be one of the quintessential (that means REALLY important) services that a town can provide to its residents.

Oh my! That's really the best Kearny example I've seen of someone being "hoist by one's petard." Maybe Democrats and liberals need not worry about the right wing fringe and Tea Partyers since most of them (like 2smart4u) can't live up to their principles? Or should we hope that they act like Christie and live up to their cost cutting dogma?

I as a taxpayer in Kearny, would like to know how much money our Wonderful Mayor and town council has wasted on lawyers over the past few years. It seems like the town is crying that their surplus of money has dwindled away, and that the only ones to blame are the police and fire dept. So to all the tax payers in town, SHOULD WE EXPECT A DECREASE IN OUR TAXES NEXT YEAR WHEN THE TOWN LAYS OFF 17 POLICE AND 15 FIREFIGHTERS? We all know the answer to this. The only changes will be an increase in the taxes and a decrease in our fire and police protection. I think every taxpayer needs to ask our mayor how much money he has spent on laywers over the past 3 yrs. It seems they have unlimited money to spend on them.

Huh?? First of all I'm not a FF, secondly I voted for Christie and support him 100% in his efforts to turn back the dem. tax and spend policies that have gotten us into the sad state we're in now.

I don't know how you equate FF salaries with "socialism", you need a dictionary.

Next, I'm self-employed and not effected by Christie's cutbacks (rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated).

Finally, I don't think FD and PD salaries are excessive, they risk their lives every day to protect us

(even nutcases like you) and they deserve our support.

That's the standard fire response.

So $98,000 in salary plus overtime plus health insurance plus pension = $150,000 per fireman. You think that's not excessive?
