Did anyone read the Observer this week regarding the Town of Kearny layoffs, furloughs, department cuts, etc.?

Does anyone remember our Board of Education Superintendent Mr. Digesere "selling" the school budget to the public by saying that taxpayers were only going to see a $76.00 increase per average home and than to further his sale he stated that there has not been an increase the past 3 years so is you divide $76.00 over 4 years that would reflect less than $20.00.

These statements were brought out in the past few months and prior to the budget vote. The facts were that $76.00 was not the right figure, that the budget was based on a fiscal year and not a calendar year, so in effect the increase per average house was going to be double what we being told. Well the facts are in and it seems we were "sold" a bunch of crap. The average house is going to see an increase of $213.00.

So, Mr. Digesere and your pack of puppets who got hosed?

The Board of Ed budget is larger than the Town of Kearny!!!

Wake up people of Kearny and take an interest in what is going on!

If you were at any of the buget hearings, you would have heard the answer to the question regarding fiscal vs calendar year. Taxes will go up approx. $76.00 total from the school portion of the budget. Not $76.00 from 7/1 to 12/31 and then again another $76.00 from 1/1 to 6/30. Try again.

This is ABSOLUTELY correct. It is the BOE that needs to be examined with a microscope.

Let's take one example that illustrates the problem. We have an UNNECESSARY VP of Attendence and Discipline at the High School. He is not even from Kearny, and you never see the guy in Kearny, and he makes $150,000 +++ a year for taking attendence. This job could go to a retired KPD veteran for less than a quarter of the money, a guy who will supervise attendence and be able to determine what students TRULY are a threat to the student body. KHS VP PR just throws kids out on the streets of Kearny. Kearny tops the ENTIRE STATE in expullsions and suspensions. Now, who's problem does that become? The KEARNY POLICE DEPARTMENT'S problem! Now we have kids, who probably just need a little guidance, out on the streets unsupervised and getting into real trouble, all because they didn't wear an school I.D. or have a hoodie over their uniform.

So what is our response? We leave this VP in place out an astronomical salary and we cut 5 policemen instead. How does that make any sense?

While we are discussing salaries, why are we paying a gym teacher $150,000 to be the atheltic director? Sports have gotten WORSE under his direction, yet we let him stay when we could put a younger, more qualified individual in at about half the salary, someone who will do a better job and grow into the position instead of just padding his salary to get a bigger pension such as VP JM is doing, a reward for his years coaching soccer.

Keep the Police and Fire, keep our town safe, and get QUALIFIED people doing jobs in the High School at reasonable salaries. It is the BOE that needs a microscope put up their butt, not the town, it is the BOE budget causing the high taxes. Leave the police and fire alone, their departments are NOT disfunctional, it is the School System that is right now putting the stranglehold on tax-payers.

Last item. Why the hell are we paying a Superintendent of Schools $225,000 and an assistant Superintendent $205,000???? THEY BOTH GET PAID MORE THAN THE GOVERNOR!!!

Somethings never changes. I hear he hired an old time friend to be the principal for the High School also. I can only imagine how much she is getting paid>>>>>>>>>>>> Get rid of Degesere and start over with new board members and new administration in the schools.Way to many favors for friends.

I was at the Budget hearings. I listened to Mr. Digesere speak with forkedth tongue and try fuzzy mathematics on the public. You are totally wrong....... TAXES ARE GOING UP $213.00 ON THE AVERAGE HOUSE ASSESSED AT $100,000.00 JUST FOR THE SCHOOL BUDGET ALONE!!!! Mayor Santos actually announced at the last council meeting that the School portion of the upcoming tax bills were reflecting an INCREASE just on the SCHOOL PORTION of $218.00 per house for the average house, some more a few less.

You need to educate yourself just a little before you type nonsense. This was the game the Supt. played on the public..... the BOE works on a fiscal year July 1 to June 30 not a calendar year Jan 1 to Dec 31 like the Town does, the school budget is for the current school year Sept 2010 to June 2011. The $76.00 increase spoke of is where his fuzzy math comes in. Taxes in Town are paid on a calendar year, by quarters, so when the School budget was passed taxpayers get hit with an increase in their 3rd and 4th quarter tax bills of an average of $76.00 and than on their 1st and 2nd quarter tax bills of another $76.00. Now the BOE figured the increase on homes assessed at $100.000.00, but the Town goes by $80,000.00, so instead of an average increase of $76.00 it comes out closer to an average home seeing an increase of $54.50 per quarter or $218.00 a year for tax year ending 2011.

Thank you and keep drinking the KOOL-Aid at the Board Office.

PS- You will be receiving your tax bill any day now, no need to reply, just look at your bill!
