I definitally agree, it was childish of concerned mom to voice that opinion.  I am happy that i have this opportunity to send my child to.

I AM HAPPY THAT I HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY TOO, BUT I STILL THINK THAT THE 'COUNSELORS SHOULD HAVE TRAINING OR MORE OF IT. Don't you care if your children are being watched or having fun or even being acknowledged? Instead of sitting against a wall all afternoon? Since when is it childish to have an opinion? Do you want your children growing up without an opinion? I really don't understand that comment. Does anyone else, maybe its me but I doubt it.

How dare you say go to burger king, not every teen from kearny is a hoodlum that wears fitted yankee caps and shorts down to their ankles, some are home from college and just need some spending money to use while they are getting educated

I did not call them hoodlums....I said they need to do there job. And if their college students, thats more reason for them to be responsible.

 Are you one of the counselors?  You sound like one, getting all defensive.

No I am not a counselor, just happy that I have this opportunity to send my daughter to this camp. I also have an older daughter and I know how hard she has to work for the money she earns and how tough it is to have a job, while balancing a social life and school.

I have an older daughter too. She works very hard for her pay check. Key words-"works very hard". She is also pregnant. She also volunteers alot with children and the disabled as do I, so don't tell me that these "counselors" shouldn't be more attentive. All I wanted was a little positive feedback. If I knew how many hateful people are out there I would have never came on this site. Now I have to make my point and I will.

My daughter is 18, if she can do all that, then these "counselors" can do there job!

Once again, I have to agree. These kids are being PAID for their work. They are not volunteers. They should look up the definition of "camp counselor" and try to follow along. While these counselors are not getting rich from this summer job, it doesn't mean that they shouldn't be responsible and DOING their job. Unless I am wrong, most readers feel that if you aren't being paid a high salary, you shouldn't have to do a good job. Maybe that's what is wrong with this country!

I have never said anything negative about the "camp", I did not put the "counselors" down, what I am saying is that they should do their job.  You really think that it is better to have your child put up against the wall?  Are you insane?  You wouldn't want your child to get the most out of their summer?  Yes you can get a babysitter for less than $50 a day, but I thought this would be good because my child is familiar with the school and children in his class.  If you want to be a "counselor" then you should have training with children. I voiced my concern on this site because I know that there are some concerns about this program and I thought maybe I could get some positive feedback. I do not put my name on this because I do not want anyone getting back at my child or family.  And you know for a fact that will happen.  Another point, the "camp" has many groups, maybe your children are in one of the better ones.  If you knew me you would not think I was arragant and why is it horrific for me to want some advice?  Isn't it better to ask for help than to let the situation escalate?  You call it an amazing bargain, I think it is a great project, but not amazing.  I never thought that me asking for some good sound advice from anyone from this great town would turn out like this.  I can't beleive that there are some parents out there who really do not care if their child is having a good summer or not.

I really want to thank all the parents who gave me good advice and are sincere, it means alot to me, from my heart.  God Bless.

Concerned Mom

P.S. I hope I answered all of your questions and opions about me.  I did not mean for you to wet your pants. God Bless.

You didn't say anything negative about the camp? You said your child is bored, that the children don't do anything all day, that the counselors don't do their job, but you didn't write anything negative? DO I think it is better to have my child sitting up against a wall than off wandering around in the halls? OF COURSE! Perhaps you are the insane one or perhaps you just didn't read my comment correctly in that case perhaps next time you decide to call someone insane you should check out what they said. Have my child get the most out of their summer? It's a practically a babysitting service, the children do so many activities that as a working parent I would not be able to provide. So yes, I do believe my child is getting the most that I can offer them for this summer. The day you have mentioned where the counselors were playing basketball and the children were sitting, I did pick up my child slightly early as I am sure you did. When i asked my child why they were sitting in the gym and not out on the bleachers my child said that they had just got back from the sprinklers and were cooling off in the air conditionered gym before going back out into the heat, so before you start instigating problems perhaps you should have inquired why the children were not doing any activity, do you honestly think the counselors would just be doing that for no reason? If you want advice on what to do, do not negatively voice opinions of a camp that you have been sending your child to for weeks. Go to the Recreation Dept., if there is no success for you, take matters into your own hands remove your child from the program is you think it is run so poorly. Don't make yourself look like such a martyr as though you were just looking for some harmless advice because yes I do believe you statements are arrogant and not well thought out. Also, you have made another arrogant comment implying that I don't care if my children have a good summer or not. My child enjoys camp and makes the best of it. My child has said that they are giving the option to play whatever games the majority of children and counselors are doing, if they choose not to, the counselors cannot cater to that, perhaps your child is just not making the best of camp. Also for the person who made a comment about the indivdual who did not complete his/her sentence that was extremely rude, if you look through many of these posts you will find many grammatical and punctual errors, I believe those are far worse mistakes than a simple typographical error and I do not see you leaving any comments regarding those mistakes. Another point to be made is the remark about the pizza being "nasty" I am sure the pizzeria the pies came from would not be pleased to hear those slanderous remarks, just because the pizzeria is not know to you doesn't mean that other parents who read this website aren't aware either. Perhaps now parents will think twice about ordering from that pizzeria, when there wasn't actually anything "nasty" about it, but the adjective was used to make your story sound more heinous than the situation truly was. The bottom line is if you feel so strongly about the "horrific" predicament your child is don't bring your child anymore. If such a large majority as you try to claim were so upset with the program I am sure something would be done. However, if appears to me that only a minority of parents feel this way otherwise I am absolutely certain things in the program would change. Perhaps your concern cannot escalate because there isn't much substance to it in the first place.

What is wrong with you? Are you really serious? You would not mind if your child stands against a wall all afternoon? Someone should call DYFS on you, that is child abuse.

You are a joke. Did she say "i love having my daughter sit up against the wall all day long", no. I would believe it is better to sit in a air conditioned gym after a long hot walk, rather than waiting for the parents to pick them up in the outside heat. Why the hell would you call DYFS? Did she say she beats her child or keeps them in cages in her house. Are you the serious one? Maybe i should call DYFS on you because you want your child to stay out in the heat, risking heat stroke or exhaustion. You and concerned mom should get to get together and head up your own summer camp. I am sure the children will be treated very well, and all would be kept busy the entire day. I would def not send my child to your camp if you had one. I wouldn't want my child to be kept out in the heat all day just because you think they are having fun that way. I am starting to believe that nobody shuts the hell up. Obviously if something needed to be done it would have been done, one mother constantly whining isn't helping.

The children did not stand, they were sitting. Am I serious? Of course I am. I think there is something wrong with you, how dramatic can one possibly be? DYFS because my child was sitting down after a hot walk? I don't believe so. Please explain to me where that would fall under the category of child abuse. As defined by most states child abused would be described in this way:

"Within the minimum standards set by CAPTA, each State is responsible for providing its own definitions of child abuse and neglect. Most States recognize four major types of maltreatment: neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse.

The examples provided below are for general informational purposes only.

Neglect is failure to provide for a child's basic needs. Neglect may be:

Physical (e.g., failure to provide necessary food or shelter, or lack of appropriate supervision)

Medical (e.g., failure to provide necessary medical or mental health treatment)

Educational (e.g., failure to educate a child or attend to special education needs)

Emotional (e.g., inattention to a child's emotional needs, failure to provide psychological care, or permitting the child to use alcohol or other drugs)

These situations do not always mean a child is neglected. Sometimes cultural values, standards of care in the community, or poverty may be contributing factors, indicating the family is in need of information or assistance. When a family fails to use information and resources, and the child's health or safety is at risk, then child welfare intervention may be required.

Physical abuse is physical injury (ranging from minor bruises to severe fractures or death) as a result of punching, beating, kicking, biting, shaking, throwing, stabbing, choking, hitting (with a hand, stick, strap, or other object), burning, or otherwise harming a child. Such injury is considered abuse regardless of whether the caretaker intended to hurt the child.

Sexual abuse includes activities by a parent or caretaker such as fondling a child's genitals, penetration, incest, rape, sodomy, indecent exposure, and exploitation through prostitution or the production of pornographic materials.

Emotional abuse is a pattern of behavior that impairs a child's emotional development or sense of self-worth. This may include constant criticism, threats, or rejection, as well as withholding love, support, or guidance. Emotional abuse is often difficult to prove and, therefore, child protective services may not be able to intervene without evidence of harm to the child. Emotional abuse is almost always present when other forms are identified."

If you could please let me know how I qualify for abuse with the proper guild lines currently available to you, it would be greatly appreciated, because I am not the one who has something wrong with me accusing other people of child abuse because I don't think a camp that you have such a problem with is doing a bad job. Maybe you should stop writing on this web site and do something about it because clearly despite how long this has been going on you haven't done anything about it. If you feel that your child is in such a harmful situation that sitting up against a wall is child abuse and DYFS should be called, well then I hate to break it to you but your child was there, you witnessed it, and yet still subject your child to this "abusive" environment? Perhaps you should consider contacting DYFS on behalf of your own child if you feel that way.

I thought I was done with this site. Ok, I pulled my child out on Friday. Your opinion means nothing to me. Like I said and from what was written here some of the children were not happy. It works for you and your family thats great, it did not work for mine. Maybe its me but I am not happy with my child against a wall all afternoon nor am I happy with my child being bored. $50.00 every week may not be alot of money to you, but for me it is. I work very hard and I am the only one who works full time in my family (that lives in my house), so yes I want the best that I can get. I did not want to stir up anything, just seeking good advice and I did get some. People like you can give nothing positive if your mind is on a one way track. Open up a little there are real people with real problems. The Kearny Rec. is a great thing, but this year something was not right with this particular program. Well have a great summer.

Please lighten up the problem is solved.

Is this an adult or child responding? No wonder every one is so uptight in Kearny, Some one has a problem and you put them down for it. Happy I only visit, I would hate to live here with the likes of you.

See, I am not the only one who thinks that BK comment was absolutely rude.
