BOE Madness

Is it possible that the BOE suffers from mass insanity? Look at some of these salries for extras from the BOE Minutes. Do you still wonder why taxes continue to go up. This is only scratching the surface. i'm sure the Mayor and Town Coucil piss away money like this also.

Or, what job here would you take and how little would YOU be willing to do it for?

In my opinion, its worth every penny giving these extra activity's and sports to our kids. I can't imagine what this town would be like if these students had no direction after school. Where else would they build self respect and confidence.

That was only Spring season, you forgot to post Fall and Winter......

which is posted in the BOE minutes for regular meeting May 21, 2007 on the district web site.

Only a person that has no idea what goes into coaching or advising would post this. In fact, I challenge you to acquire information from other districts and see how much their coaches and advisor are paid in comparison.

same old same old....when all else fails.....blame the educators who take on the added weight and have the nerve to get paid for it. Take a poll and see how many teachers work extra jobs to make ends meet. Coaching/Advising is a part time job. Look at it that way, then divide those salaries by let's say by an 4 hours a day, six days a week (give or take depending on your position) for approximately 4 months (the average for a season). See how that adds up!

What would I cut and why? You're kidding right? How about starting with the crew and the weight room.

Also, as I've said, this is only scratching the surface. I can't imagine the waste that isn't as easily visible to the public through the BOE minutes.

You must be a person who has never played sports or had a child who played sports! How sad and narrow minded you must be. Sports while not for everyone and certainly not as important as academics is a wonderful life learning experience. You learn to work in a team atmosphere, discipiline, working for a common cause just to name a few. Just because sports are not your thing don't punish the kids who benefit and enjoy these programs and the coaches who receive a meager stipend for their long hours, and no I am not a coach just a former athelete who were it not for sports I believe would not have accomplished the things that I have.

Well then, don't just cut one or two sports, cut every single one of them!!!! While you are at it, cut all clubs, the Honor Society, Student Government, the Senior Play the musical and every student activity in the district. Cause if one gets cut, they will have to cut all of them. And I'll be the first one at the meeting screaming that. Oh sure, we'll save lots of money, I'll bet you all that money will wind up going to taxes to hire a lot more police officers. We'll need them when the kid are tearing up the town every night.

Just because they are sports does not mean they are not a learning experience. The value of team work, self respect, self discipline, honor, pride and self esteem that these kids will bring with them into their future work experience is priceless.

No matter what town you may move to, you are still going to pay taxes for school, so, get over it.

I guess I was wrong, it's not BOE Madness and Magin is wasting his breath on the mayor recall/tax threads. Go Kearny, keep throwing that tax money into the pit! But why have you voted down so many school budgets over the past ten years?

That's great reasoning, spend $24,000+ on crew coach salaries alone, or hire more cops because the kids will tear up the town.

What response do you need? It's obviously a waste of money.  Don't you realize how many children could be helped academically with that money?

69455[/snapback]

Oh boy...The response I need is what jobs or programs do you want eliminated from this list and why, AND, if you don't want some eliminated which ones would you do and for how much less money would you do them?!

Now answer the questions! I already stated what response I needed!

The money that's being spent each year on these programs are an investment in education.

How many kids are going to get the chance to go to good colleges on scholarships or partial scholarships because of these activities because, don't they need to maintain a certain grade level to compete in the first place?

But forget about that for a moment and read some of the names of the coaches. Tony and Richie and former coaches like Ciffelli and Miller. Each of them have given back far more than what they get paid as coaches.

Sure, we could cut out all after school activities to save money. And we could hire more police and fire fighters. But these activities are just as important to shaping a childs future and how?

They learn how to work together through discipline. Understanding through team work, making mistakes and the impact of those mistakes and how to correct them. That life isn't always about winning or losing, but how hard you tried and this is something that can't always be taught in class.

For me this is the best investment a person can make.

Then I hope you're not one of the people bitching about taxes and voting down the school budgets.

Money well spent? Not if you're talking about the ******* I think you're talking about.

Since I don't know what******you're talking about it's a little hard to respond.

My point is that someone singled out salaries or some of the activities they don't agree with and that they perhaps would like to see eliminated. Thats what I responded to. It was just my opinion.

As far as taxes, I don't know of anyone who likes paying them. But I don't mind paying them as long as the money is put to good use. I don't vote on the school budget because I don't live in Kearny any more, but what I've seen of the last few budgets apparently a lot of people don't even vote. And I didn't move because of taxes. I moved because I had an opportunity to go to College and went back into the military. But I do remember that growing up people always complained about taxes and the crooked politicians. First they were the democrats and then it was the republicans and now it's come full circle.

Where I live now, the School Board submits their budget to the County Council for approval and they make the decision along with all of the other Departments budgets.

And even in the towns that have municipalities, the county makes the decisions. Making a long story short, we have some of the best schools in the state. And yes, the people pay for it through their taxes. Even though I don't have children I still pay right along with everyone else.

But maybe someone can answer this question for me. Why do they hold BOE elections and vote on the school budget in the spring? Wouldn't it save money to hold these elections in november when the general elections are held? And since there seems to be a dislike for the school board moving the election to november might give the voters the chance to make changes.

Sometimes complex problems can be solved with simple solutions.

These salaries are not necessarily being singled out. As the post pointed out, this is just a sample and only begins to scratch the surface. If you think $24,000+ for crew salaries or $8000.00 plus for weight room salaries is worth it, then great. I'd just like to see people stop complaining about taxes and ever increasing budgets. The sad fact is that we have people on the BOE and Town Council that can't even manage there own lives, let alone a multi million dollar budget.

BTW, the reason the BOE elections are held in the spring is the hope that it will keep voter turn out low and that this will help to get the budget passed and more of the same old members and their croanies voted in. It hasn't worked very well over the past several years though, budget-wise that is. And yes, it would save money if the elections were held in November.

I would cut the football coaches perks. Why do we pay a guy a full salary to teach who does not teach? He then gets a stipend on top of that to coach - as well as a stipend for the weight room. Let me ask, if he weight room is after school and football practice is after school, how does this guy do both????

He is double dipping at the taxpayer's expense. My son goes to the weight room and he said he has never seen this man in the room once. He gets this salary for three seasons - and does nothing.

Solutiion- if he gets paid to teach, make him actually teach - make him be accountable in the weight room - an on the field. There are mre assistants in football then any other sport and they have the worst record. I don't blame the kids for this - they try but if they were really motivated by a man who does his job then I think they would have more kids participate. That is why my son quit.

I think sports are a important part of our childrens schooling, and it gives the teacher ********* that are out there yet another chance to **** *** with our kids. Suspending a teacher with pay *** ****** *** **** *** **** is a wonderful way to spend our taxpayers money. I think we need to be more focused on our kids and what the boe is doing to ensure their safety. That I would pay top dollar for!!!!!!!!!!!!
