  1. I've seen a number of reports on this event. Yes, George Zimmerman, with the assistance of another man, helped rescue a family of four from an over-turned vehicle and yes, it was an action that deserves recognition, but nowhere in any of these reports does it say the family was black....

  2. Get rid of Millar and the K.H.S football. It is a waist of money now .If the district wants to save money do it there. Football is History in Kearny. Millar let everything fall apart He is lost .Promote other sports activities.
  3. An accomplishment was attained by a wrestler that has only been achieved by 4 previous wrestlers in the history of KHS wrestling, and the silence is deafening. This young man has devoted his time and energy to win 100 matches during his high school career. An amazing fete considering the level of competion that he's faced in his 4 years at KHS. Why no mention in the Observer or Kearny Journal? The Jersey Journal and the Ledger also failed to report on this achievement. Is this because the information was not forwarded to the appropriate authorities or was it neglected on spite? Whatever the reason, it's time to say, "WELL DONE JT". Hopefully your future endeavors quiet the detractors and naysayers.

I totaly agree......when accessing the discussion thread waiting for a second window to show-up is somewhat disconcerting. Also when changing from one topic to another usually a blank window appears and then it's necessay to scroll to the top to read the posts....personally I liked the old better.

I absolutely hate this new format....unbelieveably difficult to scroll through the most popular thread DISCUSSION FORUMS.....you lost a long-time viewer......good-bye

  5. I like the look of the new website. The only thing I don't like is the Forum in the new website. Having the forum in its own scroll box when the webpages is a seperate scroll box makes scrolling very uncomfortable, constantly having to scroll the inner page and the whole page. Anyone else have the same issues?

Other then that, I like the site.

    KEARNY FOOTBALL

    Kearny High School

    336 Devon Street

    Dear Family and Friends:

I have some exciting news to share. You may or may not know that we are part of the Kearny High School football program. Our program is improving tremendously. Between our young and enthusiastic coaching staff, the support of the administration and new players joining us every day we are already off to a great start for the 2009 season.

What’s exciting is, our team has been given the opportunity to participate in a one day camp being offered at Temple University.

To help defray the cost we are asking for a $10.00 donation, or whatever is comfortable for you. Make checks payable to Kearny Football, put my name in the memo of the check send it to Kearny High School, 336 Devon Street, Kearny, NJ 07032, Attn: Coach Oscar Guerrero.

The benefits this will afford us could be amazing! We are all very excited about going. Not only can something like this show results on the field it will also be a great bonding experience for our team and coaching staff.

If you are interested in keeping up to date on what is going on with my team log on to:

    http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=khfb

Thank you in advance for whatever support you can provide.

Thank you, from KEARNY KARDINAL FOOTBALL

What a great idea....not only will this help the young men, but it also gives the community a chance to get involved in something positive. We're always posting and complaining about the lack of activities for the children of Kearny, now we have the opportunity to "put up or shut up"....good luck and you can count me in.

  7. Apparently, a "member" of the football and wrestling booster clubs has been scamming merchandise from local vendors. He is ordering things and tell the merchants that he booster clubs are responsible for the bills. The last was $175 worth of food that the merchant thought was going to a family that recently experienced a loss, instead, the food was sent to this "members" home to be consumed by him and his sons.

To all the honest booster club members, thank you for all you have done for the students. For this asshole, **** **** to *****, or better yet when is your ***** **** **********?

THE SILENCE RE:THIS POST IS DEAFENING

  8. With exception.....

It would have been better to celebrate the success of Kardinal Wrestling this year for what the team and each individual wrestler accomplished. Give the kids who worked their butts off the props. Don't diminish it by suggesting that there was unfair advantage somewhere else. I might think you were implying that there was a better program or coach downtown. I know you didn't mean to do that.

You're absolutely right and I apologize for inferring there is an unfair advantage. But, the reason I inserted that little innuendo was to point out KHS's success was accomplished with "home-grown" talent and not through the importation of young men from outside any sending area. MEA CUPLA

  9. Great Job Coach Carratura and all the wrestlers. Where are the regions being held and what are the times.

The regionals are to be held on Tues. 2/24 @6:00pm at West Orange HS, 51 Conforti Ave......it would be nice if some of us could make the effort to show up and support these young men. As an aside, one thing I failed to mention in my earlier post, KHS placed 2nd to St. Peter's Prep. in the regionals. Quite an accomplishment without the benefit of "scholarships".

  10. With all the negetivity that seems to prevail on this forum it might be worthwhile to have some positive postings. I'm referring to the outstanding season the KHS wrestling team has had this season. These young men have devoted enormous time and energy to try to achieve some level of success, and in my estimation, they have proven to be up to the task. It's not over yet by any means. The districts are completed and eight of the athletes have advanced to the regionals that will be contested in the coming week. Hopefully, all eight will advance to the state finals in Atlantic City. However if some do not advance, we can still say to ALL of them.....WELL DONE. Lets hear it for the guys.

  11. I find it very disturbing that, once again, HHS soccer team has brought honor to the Town of Harrison, and nothing appears on this forum. People seem to easily come on this site and report all the negitivity of the town, but are reluctant to acknowledge the accomplishments of some young men that devote their time and energies to something positive. I realize the participants names don't start with Mc, Mac, "O" or end with "ski" but this does not take away anything from their honoring their town. Perhaps it's time for ALL of the citizens of Harrison to get behind these kids and give them the recognition they deserve.

  12. does anyone have any info re:lock-down in the Kearny and Harrison schools due to suspected Newark gang activity? I heard initiation into these street gangs required the harming of x number of school age girls and boys. I checked on-line NJ.com for info but to no avail. With three grandsons in school I'm concerned where something like this could lead.

  13. Instead of blaming the coach, let's look at the root cause for poor HS football teams. The problem in Harrison is the lack of playing fields. A good HS football team is developed early in PeeWee leagues and to have an effective PeeWee league you must have facilities, meaning playing fields where kids can learn the game. Proof of this is the soccer team, they have the courts where they learn the game.

The mayor and council had the chance to correct this situation when they began to redevelop the town. They had the opportunity to provide playing fields where kids could learn the game. Unfortunately, the mayor and council chose instead to cram as many townhomes as could be possibly squeezed into the area. Taxes have gotten rediculous yet there's no place a kid can kick a football or play a touch football game with his friends.

It easy to blame the coach but if you have to teach a kid who's never played on an organized team before HS the basics of the game and then put him up against a kid that grew up playing football in PeeWee leagues, the results are what you got last week. If you want to blame anyone, blame the mayor and council. They dropped the ball, they had the opportunity to make this town into something attractive; a combination of housing, commercial and recreation space in the redevelopment area. Instead, they gave in to the developers and allowed them to overbuild the area. You can be sure the developers don't live in Harrison, they didn't care about your kids. Their kids are playing in PeeWee leagues inother towns.

OOOh WEEEE......not to make too much of this but......if you want to do something bad enough you will find a way. As a kid growing-up in Harrison we could always find somewhere to play if we wanted to. Touch football on the street or walking to Hudson Park was what we did. Granted we had Roosevelt Park that is now a soccer field but again where there's a will there's a way. My feelings are too much is being done to have the kids organize when maybe sandlot ball is a better way to develope some kids. Let's face it, coaches at the organized level will play their better players, even both ways, before the kids who are less adept. On the street WE ALL PLAYED.

  14. Hoping to get a win this weekend vs. Dwight-Englewood! This program will be VERY competitive next year, the sleeping bear is about to wake up!

EXBLUETIDER - Your Grandson is doing great, he is a tough kid who is playing Frosh and JV. There are a lot of good signs that this program is going in the right direction.

Thank you for the update....hopefully with some excellent coaching and summer camps he'll make a contribution to a program that is ready to attain the level that it deserves.

  15. Dorothy Caulfield, currently a Guidance Counselor at KHS, was appointed as Acting Director of Student Personnel Services.

I don't know if anybody else saw the article in the newspaper re:students entering college and the need for remedial classes. This includes honor students with 3.0 GPA. Apparently this covers the entire gambut of schools, private and public. The cost in time and money can be devestating to families and students. The bottom line is most students will require six years to attain an undergraduate degree. As a grandparent with four grandsons to be educated, this is alarming. Someone or something has to be done to upgrade the present ciriculum to prepare our children for the next step in their education process. Hopefully better qualified people will be hired to run the high school programs so these shortcomings will be rectified.

  16. I hope that this years 9/11 memorial is as spectacular as last years or perhaps it will be cancelled by the McMole and council. Maybe the fireman can (on duty, of course) grab some empty boots and beg for money again like a bunch of street urchins. I am glad I didn't contribute to the shamefull begging that I witnessed. They think they are better than everyone else because they do not have to work for a living and the disgrace of their so-called profession is highlighted by the 100K they are making at a time when people are losing their jobs and homes. I know no off-duty fireman will come to town without getting paid, but Obama did say,"I am my brothers keeper." VOTE FOR McCain/Palin and stop the corruption, patronage, and cronyism in Hudson County.

What a laugh....I'm sure whomever gets elected will take under consideration the corruption in Hudson County. It's time to realize no one at the national or even state level are interested in changing the status quo. This has to be done at the local level. People have to investigate and probe the folks running for office and get off their duffs and vote. Take a look at the turn-out for the last election and see how few registered voters took the time to voice their opinions of the present elected officials. I guess it's easier to B**ch and moan than take the time to vote. Bottom line, if you don't voice your opinion through your vote, you deserve what you have. AMEN

  17. There was excitement in the air last Friday night and it wasn't in the area of crime or violence or any of those things you read about in the Observer. It was Kearny Football and it is back. It was a 27-0 WIN which Kearny hasn't enjoyed in a long time. It was nice to see the Kearny side of the stands full for a home game and that wasn't even having the band there which would have added another 100+ people. Kearny put on an excellent demonstration of how football is to be played. I know the comments afterwards for those who did not attend was that was that it was "only NA", but it was still enjoyable to watch and glad for this program that has come a long way to get to this point. I don't believe that Kearny is a real contender yet but I do believe it will give a lot of teams a run for their money. And as the New England Patriots learned strange things happen that may affect the outcome of this season or league so anything is possible.

Kearny's first regular season game is this Friday Sept 12th at home in Kearny High School Stadium against Lincoln of Jersey City. Anyone who doubt's this teams talent should make an attempt to come out under the lights at 7 p.m. and see this team. It's not the same old Kearny Football. Time will tell of how good this team will be and it would be nice to get some support from people around this town. So please make an effort to come out and witness this Kearny Football Program.

It would be areally nice jesture if the people of Kearny got behind the new coaches and supported the football team. Like eveyone else I'm tired of reading the negative reports about the youth of Kearny. Perhaps a show of support would light a spark that leads to a return of the glory days of KHS athletics. Believe it or not, there was a time when KHS played in what was considered one of the best conferences in the NATION and continuously held their own. So people, get off your duffs and show the kids you care.

  18. I'd bet as much on it as I would have against your Giuliani prediction, 2dim. (yes, it's stupidly obvious that it's you)

Americans are tired of McCain-Bush policies.

Amazing....we try to start a discussion about KHS possibly moving into a different athletic conference and it degenerates into politics and racism. Is it any wonder why some people won't get involved. Why ask a simple question and get drawn into discussions that absolutely has nothing to do with the subject?

  19. The Kearny Football Program is definitely heading in the right direction. The new head coach is just flat out GREAT. His assistants are all EXCELLENT. The coaching staff is young, enthusiastic and well prepared. The coaches do not cry, they go about their business preparing the kids for the challenging schedule they have ahead of them. Football is in great hands and it WILL turn around under this new leadership. Coach Guerrero is a GREAT choice, everyone will see the difference IMMEDIATELY, I am confident of that. The numbers will see an increase also once we see some on-field success.

As far as the re-alignment, I believe it is a good thing, for football anyway. Mr Millar (who also does a TREMENDOUS job with ALL the programs and student/athletes) is correct in saying we need more information though. What will the cross-over games be? Or are they going to be independent games that need to be scheduled by Mr Millar? What I do agree with is the base alignment consisting of schools from Hudson County. I think this will help our kids with All County recognition and give us more of a local identity within the county and the Jersey Journal. I also think the schools we would be aligned with are more demographically similar to what Kearny has become, making competition more equitable in most sports. The facilities across Hudson County have really been improved of late. No difference going into Jersey City as we already have been travelling to Newark, Irvington, etc.

The administration (Somma, Millar, Ragnone etc...) and Board of Education along with Mr. Mooney has done a great job with the sports programs of late. There has been a re-newed attention given to the many different athletic programs and i think it is establishing a pretty good environment within the school. I think you will see it translate in to some on-field/court/mat success very shortly, in addition to the already successful programs. I think Hudson County will ultimately prove tough for the baseball program though, hope they can sustain their success.

Go figure, it took a soccer guy to get the football team going in the right direction...

Now... if we can only fix that Kardinal Booster Club...

  20. I read an article on NJ.Com re:re-alignment of athletic teams in North Jersey. It would take KHS out of the Watchung Conference and put them in a Super Conference with schools in Hudson County. This would alleviate some of the travel being done now and hopefully make the football program more competitive. I'd like to get a discusson going on the feelings of locals, both pro and con. So give it a shot.

  21. The local high schools here in NC all have dress codes. Although there was some resistance at first, I can tell you they have all been highly successful. The teachers have said they can now focus more on teaching than sending kids to the principals office for being dressed inappropriately. The dress code will work if it's enforced and the kids know it will be enforced.

FIRST OF ALL .....AS YOU CAN SEE MY SCREEN NAME IS SIMILAR TO YOURS BUT THE ODD THING IS THAT I TOO LIVE IN NORTH CAROLINA........WHAT'S GOING ON HERE

  22. Oh my gosh, stop the whining!!! I played baseball at KHS a long time ago - predating the current coaches. At that time, the coaches had their favorites. There were groups of parents who kissed the behinds of the coaches, invited them for dinner, and pushed their kids' agendas. And our coaches cursed a blue streak at us when we lost, made mistakes or the like (and you really only had to bring running shoes the day after a loss, because that's what you'd be doing all day).

Do you know what I did? I worked harder than the coaches favorites. I played harder than the kids whose parents kissed behinds. And I EARNED my spot in the starting lineup - batting Clean-Up. No whining. No crying. Just play ball.

And when I got yelled at, I dusted myself off and tried to make sure that I didn't make another mistake. After awhile, I EARNED the respect of my coaches (who stopped yelling because they knew I beat myself up over an error more than they could), and I EARNED the respect of my teammates.

What are your kids EARNING when you take up the fight for them, and protect them from the realities of life that they will surely face when they leave high school. Challenge your kids to overcome their obstacles instead of giving them built-in excuses. You are crippling them for life, and you don't even realize it.

WELL SAID , AND I APPLAUD YOUR FORTITUDE. BUT AS A GRANDFATHER WHO HAS GRANDSONS IN, OR SOON TO BE IN KHS,ALL WE CAN ASK FOR IS A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD. FORTUNATELY IN MY DAY THESE ATTITUDES BY TODAYS COACHES DID NOT PERMEATE THE ATHLETIC PLAYING FIELDS AS THEY SEEM TO BE DOING TODAY. IF YOU WERE GOOD ENOUGH, YOU PLAYED, REGARDLESS WHAT GRADE YOU WERE IN. SOME OLDER STUDENTS RESENTED THIS APPLICATION OF PLAYING TIME AND EITHER MOVED ON TO DIFFERENT SPORTS OR SAT AND WAITED FOR THEIR TURN. I'M NOT INSINUATING THAT WE WERE BETTER SERVED WHEN I WAS YOUNGER BUT THE ATTITUDES WERE MUCH DIFFERENT. MAYBE AFFLUENCE HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE SELECTION OF BALL PLAYERS INSTEAD OF TALENT.

  23. Dear Franklin, I too have great pride in the town I have lived all of my life, and am a fourth generation Harrisonian. For the record, you don’t apply for positions here you are appointed. Sad but true. Someone was so naive to think they could apply for a job with Passaic Valley at Passaic Valley. Of course they were directed to speak to the powers to be in Harrison. It would be easier to think that people are simply being difficult but sadly that is not the case. If you were from town when our present leaders were children, then you’ll remember. Things weren’t much different. The one thing I will give Frank Rodgers is that he gave back to the people in some ways. That doesn’t seem to happen anymore. Seems to be take, take take. I do believe that most of our civil servants are good hardworking people with justifiable salaries as you stated, some even underpaid by comparison, but some of the leaders of our community seem to be working towards removing the heart of the community for personal financial gains and without regard for what makes this community what it is. The best interest of the community does not appear to be at hand. We’ll leave the light on for you, just be ready to pay a small fortune in taxes.

Ps / If you are a Franklin Ave. native I suggest you view the February 19th town council meeting on Joe Woods website and listen carefully to what a certain councilman refers to residents of Franklin Ave as. If I lived there we would be in court. “Transients”….? Nice from the mouth of the councilman of the same ward.

Ps / Believe “exbluetider”’s words. It’s as if he never left. Hey exbluetider. Always enjoy reading your posts.

  24. Frankln,

I too moved from Harrison some years ago and I too hurt when I see all the negativity that's posted on this forum. However, we did leave, and because we did it's hard for us to accept that the town we grew-up in and loved so much is not the same. Time changes things and unfortunately Harrison is one of them. Given that ,it's not for us to say, whether or not it is what it is. If you want to see the changes, as one already posted, just walk down Harrison Ave. or 4th. St.(Rodgers Blvd.) . Or better yet, if you have access to the Star Ledger, check out the box scores in the sports pages. The thing you'll notice is the absence of the names that begin with Mc, Mac, O' or end with vowels or "ski". This is how the town has changed and like it or not that's reality. As for the unhappiness people have expressed with the individuals who have been elected to run the town, if you think back and are truly honest with yourself, the same thing was being said when we were growing -up. It's a reality of small town politics. The in's and not so in's. Sooner or later the noisey wheel will get the oil and through the vote the new people in town will get their own in office and then we'll see if there will be any change.
