It's a sad commentary on those running the town and those living off the back of the taxpayers....I know of entire families in town who live off the taxpayers....The elected officials work for all the citizens, not just the 381 town employees or the 700 odd BOE workers...And we'll hear the same bull as always- We can make more in the private sector than in the public sector. Well then do it....But they won't since they have ot too good....Voters of Kearny please wake up and get rid of this council and mayor..They are getting rich off of your property taxes..

GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN... I DID AND AM SAVING $3,500 A YEAR IN TAXES, BIGGER PROPERTY, NICER NEIGHBORHOOD, AND NO ILLEGALS....NOW ISN'T THAT GRAND. I WON'T SAY WHERE, CAUSE I DON'T WANT NO DAMN ILLEGALS INVADING MY NEW TOWN. STAY IN KEARNY, THEY WILL PAY THE $7,000 IN TAXES AND MORE.

Interesting....especially since, at least with the PD, the town has NEVER had a Binding Arbitration for any contract..the town has settled in EVERY Police contract since even before Santos was a councilman, nevermind Mayor.

whats interesting is that the article doesnt list the highest paid employee in kearny and thats the town attorney gregory castano. since he is not a member of the puiblic employees pension system and since he gets paid in billings and not salary. santos pays the highest salaries in hbudson county and the highest in attornies in hudson county. and thasts why our taxes are the highest in hudson county. santos taxes santos taxes santos taxes santos taxes santos taxes santos taxes santos taxes santos taxes santos taxes !

Alas, you're missing the point, never let the facts get in the way. Bottom line, leaders lead, and Santos points the finger at everyone else.

What you say about binding arbitration is probably true, not sure, but it provides the Mayor the opportunity to say "It wasn't me." Probably never heard the adage the buck stops here; certainly not one of his principles.

What's worse is that many of the highly paid individuals in town DON'T LIVE IN THE TOWN. The collect their bloated paychecks and then go to their homes in towns with lower taxes - and are completely unburdened by Kearny's tax rates.

It used to be that you lived in town if you worked in town. I know that laws and times have changed. It is a shame that it has.

Here's a question - could the town employees be making similar money in the private sector (when you adjust the pay for the better benefits, hours, working conditions, i.e., no travel, and other benefits associated with working in town)? I'm sure some could, but most couldn't . So we end up overpaying people many of whom - quite frankly - got jobs because of who they know, not what they know. Crime is up. School scores are down. Town services have diminished.

Shareholders wouldn't put up with high pay and low productivity - I don't see why taxpayers should either.

There's also this little issue of the American Revolution. We were taught in history that one reason for the revolution was taxation without representation. If you tax commuters you are doing the same thing the British did to piss off the American colonists.
