Dear Fellow Harrison Residents,

As some of you are aware (probably 10 of you) we will soon have a bunch of cop wannabees protecting us instead of real police officer. Although the Mayor will tell you he's not replacing (POLICE TRAINING COMMISSION) certifed with full law enforcement powers, the police dept. is down to 48 certified officers down from 64 12 years ago.

Whereas the crime rate (mainly the violent crime rate) has risen drastically in the past five years, as well as our taxes, why in the world would we put a bunch of police groupies with only ticket writing power out on our streets. THIS WILL NOT STEM THE TIDE OF VIOLENT CRIME IN HARRISON, IT WON'T FREE UP EXISTING OFFICERS BECAUSE BY LAW THESE POLICE GROUPIES CAN'T DO ANY EXISTING POLICE FUNCTIONS.

So basically they are a bunch of politcal hires...

God help the Mayor and Council if one of these groupies should come across a real criminal and get killed or even severley injured, because that will again come out of our pockets ie. raising the taxes.

For those residents who wish to serve as a certified police officer, go to your councilperson and Mayor and tell them to certify a DOP List and start hiring Harrison Residents...

Just do your job and close the donut hole. If you don't like your job, quit.

Dear Resideints:

You don't know what youre in for. The Mayor has decided to replace cops with specials. That may mean nothing to you in these posts, but "think outside the box" They have no police powers, and they'll still wind up keeping IA busy due to the Wyatt Earp Syndrome. THEY will be the ones RUNNING to you house when you need help. The Mayor is again rolling the dice with your safety. You don't have to like the current lineup at the HPD, either as a person or on a whole, but you are foolish if you allow this to happen further. Plans are already in the mix to hire MORE SPECIALS in lieu of COPS. Ain't that right, Stevie Boy! I need to know why is the first cuts always involving public safety! Any fool knows that public safety is top priority and and such cuts are to be a last resort. Except in Harrison, where the rich get richer and the others don't have a clue.SPEAK UP BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!!!

Mayor McDoofus, you should be ashamed.

God forbid the Mayor adds some extra help to patrol the streets! No, they aren't cops, but noone said they were. Get over yourself and realize that no matter what you cry about on this site, things are what they are and you can't change them.

This is OK to have these special cops because there is no crime in Harrison. They hardly ever mention anything in the Observer and if it's not in the Observer, there's nothing going on.

Actually, the crime rate has gone down over 50% from its high in 1995 of 962 to 454 last year. The civilians that have been hired are doing the same job as effectively and more efficiently then the PO's. The special officers will be used for traffic control at special events and oher mundane duties that don not call for a PO. So, your getting a more efficient PD at less cost then if you had all PO's. Harrison can no longer afford 64 Police Officers. :D

I think thats great with the hiring of special officers. They will patrolling certain areas and just be watching out for your safety and the safety of others. We can use them. So what's the problem.

Guest Mr. Wonderful

The civilianization of the HPD started in 2001 when a grant for 325K was received and 5 civilian dispatchers replace Lts. on the desk. The grant paid for 2 years salary and freed the cops for other duties. The a new TO was establiashed that decreased the number of Supervisory ranks and set the TO at 56. An ordinance was put in place for the appointment of special officers by the Mayor and Council.

In 2005 civilians replaced PO's in the traffic unit as parking enforcement officers.

Reguar Officers were put back on patrol.

Now Special Officers are going to be appointed to due traffic at special events.

This was all done to save money and get the job done at a lower cost.

All this was accomplished and The PBA stood silent.

You are sooooooo right. The same union that sold out its senior officers by negotiating away their accumulated sick time. That was spearheaded by a patrolman who had conveniently exhausted ALL of his sick time before the sell-out. He has since negotiated special assignments nd concessions. Not to mention daily luncheons with the man in charge, whom by the way was appointed in back room negotiations with the assistance of this same self-serving officer. Nice!!!!!:blink:

The specials will not carry guns. They will be trained at a certified Police Academy for the work tht they do. This was anticipated when the redevelopment started almost 10 years ago. The specials will do traffic at games at the new Red Bulls Stadium and be assigned to HS football games etc. They will not take the work that regular officers do. This is prohibited by State law.

Harrison has placed a lot of civilians in positions in the PD that do not require regular PO's. This is good management. Now, the Administration should look into consolidation of the Fire Dept. with Kearny and EN. This will come despite the hue and cry from the FMBA.

NJ's Governor will mandate consolidation of Pd's and Fire Dept's

because the Towns can no longer afford to do it themselves. Employees will have to contribute to their health plans etc. That's the only way property taxes can be cut.

its a bad idea to hire specials, because you will see its all political hires...however you are all wrong in your statements about them not having police powers...

depending on which specials they hire......there are special 1's and special 2's in jersey, both have police powers in an event of an emergency....special 1's carry guns with them on duty, but have to turn it in at the end of the working day...

the problem is, since these guys/girls aren't full time police...they are just gonna go out there and terrorize the towns people....all you have to do is look at seaside...you give undertrained people a badge and a gun for the weekend and they lose their mind...the people of harrison should be FULLY against hiring of specials...Harrison PD does a great job...support them in what they do..

Thanks for your input, Gov. Corzine. Now get back to work!
