Yes, Republicans today really are that stupid.

A commercial is running currently in which a planeload of people has been stranded on a desert island. Someone finds a device that will allow the group to communicate and be rescued; no one seems to care. But then someone else finds a case of cold beer and immediately everyone starts whooping it up and shouting “We’re gonna be OK!”

The commercial is a joke, right? No one really is that stupid.

If you think so, you are incorrect. At the 2008 Republican National Convention, the delegates joyously shouted “Drill, baby, drill!” as though every warning about offshore drilling could be ignored and more drilling would solve the energy problem. There a complete disrespect toward environmental concerns.

So now when the disaster strikes in the Gulf of Mexico with the BP oil spill, these same buffoons are blaming President Obama, when it was their policy, along with their attitude about letting business do whatever it likes, that caused this to happen.

The word “stupid” gets used here a lot. I hate to use it but it’s the right word. It’s the word that best describes what the Republican party in the United States has become. They’re so stupid that they think a slogan can dispense with reality. And when reality hits the coast with a massive oil spill, it’s someone else’s fault. These people are destroying this country.

Right. If offshore drilling was so predictably dangerous, why didn't Obama, who's been president for a year and a half, stop it?

I wish he had but we all know that if he had, he would never have heard the end of it. People would have whined and complained about oil and gas prices and pretended that it could all be solved by offshore drilling. So he compromised and allowed some offshore drilling. Now we pay with a huge environmental disaster.

More important, you're changing the subject. We are the problem. No matter who is in office, the American people are going to whine and complain if they don't get exactly what they want, whenever they want it. There's no sense of responsibility any more. We were supposedly at war a few years ago, and were told to go shopping. The only way we will ever have a president act responsibly is if we behave responsibly as voters and as citizens. Instead, we insist that politicians tell us that everything is rosy and all problems can be solved with no taxes and no sacrifice. That's the problem. Twenty years from now, it won't matter whether it was Obama or someone else in charge, unless we change our own behavior. For you, that begins with facing the issue instead of looking for a scapegoat so you don't have to do anything yourself.
