Firefighters stay strong in the contract fight! Dont give major give backs(you will never get them back) and dont give in. We know how this town plays games, dont fall into their trap! Remember we are all one, what you give back we will be asked to give back.

:D But remember this! WE have waited 3 years for the firefighter's contract and WE have waited 3 1/2 years for the fire officer's contract. If the town will not be FAIR, then the Arbitrator will put the town in it's place! This will take 1 more year to get a contract and will cost the town and our unions $$$$$$ So from 1 union 2 another you got your contract and $$$$$$. So put your $$$$$$$$ where your keypad is and send a donation to "The Town Workers Defense Fund" We will all need it! Remember YOU ARE NEXT

I am confused. I thought the town only wanted give backs in return for granting the 24 hr. shifts demand. If the FMBA doesn't demand the 24 hr. shifts, they won't be asked to give back anything. Isn't that correct? If so, if the union drops the 24 hr. shift demand, they won;t be asked to give back anything and could settle. While that is logical, I suspect the union won't give up that demand and doesn't want to give anything back in return for getting it. Thus, the impass.

Guest you sound smart...

but your not! Why demand give backs on something that will save the town a whole lot of money? Firemen should not have to give anything back.....the savings the town will mismange anyway is enough!!!!

Don't count on the Arbitrator, it may not turn out like you expect, but good luck.

Because they want it so badly that's why, and that's what negotiating is all about. The union isn't asking for this just to save the town money..no, they're not that altruistic. Let's be honest, it is also a great convenience and economic benefit to the rank and file. They have wanted 24 hr. shifts for years now...and that's okay but if they want it that badly,(and they do), be prepared to trade off something in return.

You are right that the benefit is mutual, although a greater benefit to some than others. It's not that the firemen want it so badly, its that the union voted to go after a shift change & that was not a unanamous decision. The union was willing to negociate givebacks right from the start. I can't say that for the town who really only started to negociate (in good faith) untill the last possible moment (the 11th hour), 2 & 1/2 years after the last contract expired. So is that good enough to answer your ?.
