CANDIDATE'S KIN IN VOTE PROBE

HARRISON - Relatives of a candidate for mayor in Tuesday's election are being investigated to determine if they committed voter fraud by registering to vote in town - even though they may actually live in Kearny, officials said.

"Following further investigation of Josie Millan Fernandez and Michael Fernandez it has become evident that they do in fact reside at (omitted) Rutland Avenue, Kearny," wrote Hudson County Superintendent of Elections Marie G. Borace in an Oct. 23 letter.

"It has also come to my attention that both individuals have applied for absentee ballots from the Harrison address and that Josie Millan Fernandez has returned her ballot to the board of elections."

Millan Fernandez is the daughter Anselmo Millan, a former Harrison councilman now running for mayor. She is married to Michael Fernandez, who heads the Friends of Harrison political action committee, which has been vocal in its criticism of town officials.

Borace goes on to say in the letter that "On the advice of Karen Du Mars of the Attorney General's Office, Election Section, I am turning this file over to Prosecutor DeFazio for his handling."

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said his office was informed of "irregularities" by Borace's office and his investigators are looking into whether anything rises to the level of criminality.

Michael Fernandez, who is running Millan's campaign against incumbent Mayor Raymond J. McDonough, said his wife has been voting in Harrison since she turned 18, and that he checked with Hudson County officials if he qualified to vote before registering.

The couple own the Spanish Pavilion restaurant on Harrison Avenue and other properties in town. But Michael Fernandez wouldn't say if their primary residence is in Harrison or Kearny.

He called the investigation "a desperate attempt by the mayor to distract the attention of the voters."

"McDonough keeps avoiding the issues on the table, such as overdevelopment of 7,000-plus condos, lack of schools and tax breaks given to these millionaire developers," he said.

Officials at the Hudson County Board of Elections and Borace's office would not comment on the investigation. McDonough did not return calls.

Marie Borace ignored the voter fraud committed by Town Attorney and Town Clerk Paul Zarbetski in 2002 when it was brought to her attention. Zarbetski sold his house at 512 Hamilton St, Harrison and bought a house in East Hanover. Zarbetski then switched his voting address from 512 Hamilton St to 119 Warren Street, Harrison (the house of his father in law) and voted for several years in Harrison. In the meantime, his wife registered to vote in East Hanover (Morris County) and voted.

Marie Borace was presented with the evidence: voter registration, voting record, property address look ups and did nothing with it. She now is turning stuff over to the prosecutor's office. She and Zarbetski have to resign now.

Thanked at the Mayor's Victory Party.  Did his vote put the Mayor over the top?  Or did Zarbetski rig the voting machines for the Mayor?

There were others who TRIED to vote illegally!

Curvacious guy (fun guy) who moved to Pt Pleasant earlier this year was caught trying to vote.  How many more like him???

Mr. Machine, owner of Harrison Realty filled out 3 provisional ballots for young men at his residence.

Who are these new people in his house?

We all know where he lives so let’s see if they come and go.  LIAR & CHEAT!
