Bunnyland

Hello everyone, I'm currently in the process of working on an article about Bunnyland that I'm going to submit to Weird NJ. If anyone has any history of it, or knows of someone that might have some history about it, or especially if anyone has any old photos from there, please let me know. I was at the library recently and went through their files in the museum and couldn't find any pictures. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

There was a zoo. A Yak was there as I remember. A Fire engine, maybe two. I think someone went in and killed a bunch of rabbits at some point.

The was an elk or yak and the bear that was kept in the cage for years. He had a name I cant recall. There was a few incidents when someone killed animals in there at night. Also, i think the elk escaped once. There was a playground with swings and a slide and yes a fire truck. We used to get rabbits at easter and bring them there about a month later to release them in this big pen. I am sure they were all killed! I went to that park several times a week on way back from two guys or shop rite. It was a part of my childhood. There was a donkey, iI think, who later ran for office! Take your pick! Lol I suggest the kearny museum. They should have info

I cannot put my finger on it but years later when all the animals were gone but the cages were still there the place seemed creepy. It was always windy and the wind seemed to be whispering things. Silly but thats how it felt

The Bears name was Sinawik, the reverse of Kiwanis, as in the Kiwani's Club.

Once the Zoo was closed Sinawik went to the National Zoo in DC

How many old timers remember before Bunny Land when the entire block was the site of an Old Soldiers Home with barracks style housing. This was before my time, I remember the entire block being heavily wooded with the foundations of the barracks still visible among the trees.

I can remember my mother telling me that when she was a young girl (in the 1930's) walking down Bergen with her friends to visit the soldiers living there and bringing them chocolate. She remembered them sitting on rocking chairs on the front porches. I wonder if the Kearny library has any documentation, pictures ?
