Paszkiewicz caught lying to school officials again

Guest Studies and Observations

Here's the latest on the controversy over the girls' crew team and its coach David Paszkiewicz. Paszkiewicz, along with his wife, have claimed that the reason the team never races on Sundays is because of his "coaching philosophy." He has been claiming that his religious beliefs are not the reason, it's all about the best interests of the girls. Apparently he didn't think anyone ever noticed the little "book" he wrote a few years ago, where he discusses openly that he "was determined to honor God by not racing on Sundays." One Sunday the athletic director pressured him into taking the team on a Sunday race. But he prayed that it would snow, and lo and behold, it snowed, and the team had to turn around and he went to church. Saints be praised.

This was exposed publicly at this evening's BoE meeting. So now the school district is under federal investigation because this guy is willing to lie to get his way. You can read about it in Paszkiewicz's own words at this link.

The point isn't whether you like him, or think the girls' team should or should not race on Sundays (even though the boys' team does). The point is that Paszkiewicz is a proven liar. If he thinks he has to lie to get his way on religion, he will do it. How much of this will school officials put up with before they fire him?

KOTW, read Ronize's Facebook postings on "You know you're from Kearny if . . ." Just go into the group, search "Ronize" and read her post from February 19, 2015. It's right there.

Here are her exact words, for anyone who doesn't want to look them up. "I should also note that coaches have different philosophies and strategies. As far as high school crew is concerned, the goal is to qualify for the Nationals. My husband chooses a path that utilizes Saturday races allowing Sundays for rest, catching up on schoolwork, and family activities. The boy’s team coach has a different philosophy. Coaches have that discretion and they should."

That all sounds very nice but that is not reason why the girls team does not race on Sundays. The real reason is that David Paszkiewicz wants to go to church, and he thinks the girls should too. That would be OK if (1) KHS wasn't a public school and (2) he wasn't lying about it.

You may not be able to find a video or audio recording of him saying it this time, but come on, where do you think she got it? She's telling us all that this is HIS philosophy.

Think of it another way. If he admitted to the current Superintendent (who is no dummy) that the team's schedule is set around his religious beliefs, he would be admitting that his schedule interferes with his job performance. He won't admit it, so he lied about it.

You don't always need a smoking gun to prove the obvious. Only this time, there is a smoking gun: his "book."

So that's why the girls' team just drove 10 hours to Ohio to race 14 teams, while the boy's team drove 3.5 hours to race 70-some teams. The girls returned home around 5:30 Sunday morning. So much for a real day of rest.

Paszkiewicz isn't a good example for the students. He's a l**r.

The school district is under federal investigation because Paula Cavalier filed a complaint with the US Dept of Education stating there was an inequity between boys and girls crew teams. Once a complaint is filed, an investigation has to follow & that's in motion. The government will now have the final word.

This is some of the shittiest prose I've ever read. Where can I purchase all copies of this book so I can dump them in the ocean so nobody else has to read this garbage?

You are incorrect. The OCR screens cases, and declines to investigate them when they don't have any merit.

Looking a little deeper, this would not be happening if the girls' coach was selecting the best races regardless of Saturday or Sunday. When the coach refuses to enter the team in any Sunday races, many of the best races are ruled out.

You are correct that the OCR will decide. There's no guarantee that they'll find a violation but that should be beside the point, which is that the races are being selected to suit the coach's religious beliefs, not for the best interests of the girls or the team.

So you can try to throw it back on the person who called him on it but in the end, the responsibility lies with him, and with the school district for letting him get away with it.

Every time one of these issues comes up, there he is.

Paula, Matt get a life!! With all the things to worry about in this world, this is what consumes your time 24/7?

Why aren't you disgusted about the lying?

In fact, why are you lying? You don't know who is writing this. I know who's writing some of it, and it's not Paula or Matt.

True. The OCR has no jurisdiction over what's best for the students or the crew team. They're only investigating an equal access violation under Title IX. If they don't find that kind of a violation, they won't direct any action. But the team's schedule is still being set for the wrong reasons, and we can't trust the coach to set it for the right reasons. His biases are in the way.

Would be nice if the Superintendent of schools would wake up to what is going on, and take care of the problem once and for all. Don't hold your breath.

Anyone can be anyone here. If you don't want your name "pirated," use your real name.

If we can stop with the insults and aggressive comments, perhaps we can get back to the original issue - should a coach apply for a job and then be given that job if he or she has expected issues that will prevent him or her from coaching the team? I say expected because Mr. Paskewicz is aware of his devout religious views and knows from the start that he does not intend to coach on Sundays. I think it was very selfish of him and shortsighted of whoever hired him for this position. Unfortunately, not thinking this through may cause issues that Kearny doesn't need.

Agreed. The team, the school and the girls aren't about him. He's there to do a job.

What is the terms of his contract?

If he needs to work weekends and he does not,

Then he breached his contract. The BOE should replace him as coach.
