I heard that the Kearny School computers were hacked.  Employee and student personal information and grades compromised.  Any one have any more details or what steps are being taken to protect everyone?  Very concerned as a parent.

I hear the computers were hijacked by someone demanding money.  All the teachers were telling the students about it and not to use their phones in school.  It would be nice for the Board of Education to notify the parents of this.  Can parents use the Parent Portal to check grades and attendance, or will that infect their personal computers?  I'm sure the BOE email is down, but they could notify the parents the old fashioned way with a note sent home.

Yes, there is a virus - a bad one.  We have not been able to use our school computers since Tuesday.  Personal information WAS NOT COMPROMISED.  Logging into Genesis from home or the Kearnyschools website will not infect your home computers. Genesis is an off site program - not infected by the virus to our servers.  Technology has already cleared office and nurse computers.  Email is not down - it can be accessed from off site by teachers and parent.  Hopefully the rest of us will be up and running soon.

It's a virus, not hacked. But yes, we have a computer virus that they are working on fixing.

You obviously work for the school district.  Why don't you tell us what is really happening.  I never heard of a computer virus that demanded payment in Bit Coin.  Be honest and tell people the truth!

Why doesn't the state know about this!!!! The BOE is breaking the law. And please stop lying to everyone about a virus. Teachers have phones and took pictures. So maybe it is time to let the Police and State know what the BOE IS UP TO!!!!!!

Google the ".LOL! Virus"... which is what we were infected by.

The virus creates the same auto/FAKE (give us money) message on every machine it infects. Google it, I'm telling you the truth. It's taking so long to fix because the tech people have to de-encrypt each single infected file one by one. Files were infected/encrypted with .LOL! extensions on the end of them.

Kearny Schools has a hard working technology team, who are working throughout the weekend to complete the de-infection. Thank you Tech Dept.!

Guest Think what you want, but

We were infected by the ".LOL!" virus. LOOK IT UP. No one is lying to you. Each infected machine displays the same asinine "give us money" fake message. Ever single infected machine's files were  infected/encrypted with a .lol extension on its end, which is why it's taking so long. They have to change each individual file back to it's normal format (sans .lol on the end).

It's 2016. You'd think people would know what a computer virus is by now. "Call the government! It's a conspiracy!" No, it's a computer virus. lol.

You are obviously an insider, probably a school administrator, so of course you wouldn't lie to us.  LOL.  We all know what a virus is, but you obviously don't know that it is also a crime.  Why don't you ask the BOE lawyer about it if you can *** *** *** of *** **** ***!  You might have some good IT people, but the hackers have better ones.  You really think you can fix this on your own????  You live in a fantasy world.

Yea okay, we will all say it's a virus. Because we all know the BOE tells us everything that the tax payers should know about when it concearns the kids and school system. Like they will be so honest and truthful. About the BOE Attorney! Right Mrs. Sherry. Why not tell us this story and see if we believe that one.

And how stupid the tax payers are! Because unlike the town paper. The other ones do. Shame on the BOE for keeping him to represent the board.

What a professional response from an elected official!  Maybe you should write another idiotic letter to the editor about how people shouldn't ask questions about our schools and how parents shouldn't be concerned about their children.  ******** is a terrible thing, and you're a perfect example of it!
