Reason # 92 why Mitt Romney will never be President

Last week, Romney was at a campaign event in Pennsylvania, an outdoor event. The hosts who set up the even for him had put out snacks, including five dozen cookies. So what does Mr. Smooth say? Exact quote from Romney: "I'm not sure about these cookies. They don't look like you made them. No, no. They came from the local 7-Eleven, bakery, or whatever."

What a D**bA**!

If your five-year-old kid said that, you'd make him apologize for being rude.

This guy is being considered to the be lead U.S. negotiator with foreign countries, and spokesman for and public face of our country?

This isn't just your ordinary garden-variety stupid remark. It's disqualifying for someone seeking an office like this, which requires the highest level of diplomatic skills and intelligence.

Mitt Romney for President? You have got to be kidding!

The cookies came from a popular local bakery, Bethel Bakery. Romney insulted the local bakery by comparing the bakery cookies to product at a 7-11 convenience store. He just can't handle being casual with persons who are not wealthy. It's similar to the time when, trying to talk about NASCAR, Romney says that some of his best friends own NASCAR teams.

I think it's hillarious how out of touch Romney is from the regular Joe. But that doesn't disqualify him from being President.

On the other hand, I think his personal finances, including his Swiss bank account, are legitimate bases to question his candidacy for President. Notice that we're still waiting for his 10 years of tax returns. He only released one year. Said he would release the others on an unspecified "later date". My guess is that he's trying to time the release to minimize damage.

I prefer a president who understands diplomacy. If Romney can't keep from insulting his host at a campaign event, how can he represent us with foreign leaders?

I also prefer truth over fiction.

Wow! That's original.

To give a serious answer to an inane question:

1. President Obama saved the American auto industry. That's huge, 1.1 million jobs in the short term. Long term, it is a huge boost to the American economy.

2. President Obama's policies have avoided a disastrous collapse of the economy. The stock market is back to record highs and we have sustained economic growth. It's not as high as we would like but that is because of structural problems that the Republicans refuse to allow the President to address, since they can block action in the Senate and are in control of the House.

3. President Obama has re-established the regulatory system, which is necessary to avoid reckless speculation and other unnecessary risks that will destabilize the economy as they did in 2008. In other words, he has re-introduced a bit of responsibility into our major financial systems. There is much more to do.

4. As Commander-in-Chief, President Obama presided over the dismantling of Al Qaeda and the killing of bin Laden and most of Al Qaeda's top people. As a result, the terrorist threat is markedly reduced. President Obama has kept us safe.

5. President Obama has restored US standing in the world. After irresponsible neocon anti-diplomacy, our President has vastly improved how other nations view the United States. He even won the Nobel Peace Prize as a result of how significant a shift his new policies represented.

6. President Obama ended the war in Iraq, which should never have been started.

7. President Obama did what presidents have been trying to do for more than 100 years: he got national health care legislation signed into law. Whatever happens to the current legislation, considering that Republican presidents have been stacking the Supreme Court with right wingers for decades, this legislation will raise the bar of what the American people expect from their health care system. It's not just about the insurance companies now. We are beginning to recognize that health care is a basic human right.

8. President Obama ended the unjustifiable policy that discriminated against the LGBT community in regard to military service. This was long overdue. There never was a good reason for such discrimination in our armed forces, or anywhere else.

President Obama has given us hope that we can have a responsible government after all. Now if the people will have the good sense to vote the Tea Party know-nothings out of office, we can watch the country make real progress on long-term issues like energy development, sustainable resource use and preservation of the natural environment that sustains us all.

And the beauty of it is that it's all true. You never imagined that answer, did you, Tea Party know-nothing?

Let me add a few things that you missed. 1) zerO has borrowed more money (5+ trillion) from foreign countries in 3 years than any other POTUS in history. 2) More people are now on food stamps than ever before in history. 3) Unemployment is still over 8% with black unemployment 20%.

4) zerOcare will soon be overturned by the SCOTUS because it is not only illegal but a total failure. 5) zerO's "Green" pipe dream has been an abject failure and has cost the taxpayers billions. 6) Gas prices are double what they were when Bush left office. 7) zerO has lied to the american public more

times than I care to list her, we all know what they are. But hey, you cling to the ridiculous notion that zerO killed bin Laden, I realize that's all you got.

Your first problem is that you don’t understand what you’re writing about. Your second problem is that you ignore everything that doesn’t fit with what you want to believe. Your third problem is that you write things that are not true. Here are the facts, most of which are direct results of the economic collapse brought about by George W. Bush:

(1) Bush has borrowed more money that Obama has, and he did it for no good reason. Obama had to preside over more borrowing after Bush nearly wrecked the economy. If we hadn’t borrowed those five trillion additional dollars, unemployment would be at fifteen percent or higher, the banks wouldn’t be lending and the stock market wouldn’t have rebounded. You can’t just cherry-pick one fact if you want to understand what is going on. You have to consider everything, which you never do. We were very near to a total collapse of our economy. You can't just pretend that didn't happen if you want to tell the truth, or if you want to understand what we need to do going forward.

(2) More people are on food stamps today because people lost their jobs in the Bush depression, though the number of people on food stamps is not as high as some Republicans claim. More people would be employed and fewer people would be on food stamps if the government was acting aggressively to end the Bush economic depression. Republicans won’t allow that to happen, so the Bush economic depression is lasting longer than it should.

(3) The unemployment rate is down considerably from the depth of Bush’s disaster. No one could have solved the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression quickly. We would have solved it more quickly if the Republicans hadn’t opposed everything President Obama has tried to do.

(4) Most of the Affordable Care Act hasn’t even gone into effect yet. So as usual your claims are ideological, not factual. And your ideology only serves the interests of the insurance companies. The people are strongly in favor of major provision of the ACA, including the new rule about pre-existing conditions and extending coverage for children to age 26. The right wing ideologues on the Supreme Court may overturn the law but if they do, they will only be doing exactly what they claim courts should not do: legislating from the bench, just as they did in declaring that corporations are people in terms of the rights of political participation. The radical right wing can only push the people so far and for so long before they realize who is rigging the system and picking their pockets.

(5) There’s no responding to someone blind enough to call green technologies a pipe dream. Our continued reliance on oil is costing you, and all of us, a bundle. It's obvious that you're not even thinking about what's best; you're just repeating what other right wingers tell you to think.

(6) If you start at the point when gas prices were depressed, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that when the economy rebounded, gas prices rose again. They’re still not as high as they were under Bush.

(7) President Obama has kept major promises, as listed previously, and he did it against complete opposition from the radicals who have hijacked the Republican party.

(8) You would like to sing the praises of Republican for getting bin Laden. Only a Republican didn't get bin Laden. Obama did. In fact, President Obama has kept us safe. There have been no significant and successful terrorist attacks against the United States under President Obama, and Al Qaeda has been all but destroyed. Bush failed to accomplish either of those things. You can hate it all you want, just like you hate all of President Obama's accomplishments but they are all true. A real patriot would be happy that we have an intelligent and responsible leader who cares about all the people and acts to prevent terrorist attacks instead of letting one happen and then trying to act like a hero when there wasn't another one. But you’ll never give President Obama credit for anything. You even refuse to call him President Obama.

Because your fourth problem - and I mean this sincerely - is that you’re an idiot.

If we hadn’t borrowed those five trillion additional dollars, unemployment would be at fifteen percent or higher, the banks wouldn’t be lending and the stock market wouldn’t have rebounded.

That's the key point. Bush borrowed five trillion dollars for no good reason. Clinton put us on a path to fiscal solvency, something Republicans claimed for decades that they wanted. The minute they got it, they threw it away to throw a party for their super-rich bosses who fund their campaigns. That is why the Citizens United decision is such a complete disaster for our country.

It's true, if Obama hadn't borrowed the additional money, the economy would be in far worse shape. By contrast, Bush came in during good times. If he hadn't borrowed unnecessarily and deregulated everything he could, the economy never would have collapsed in the first place. Clinton shares the blame for the deregulation but not for the borrowing. He put the United States in its soundest fiscal shape in decades.

That's the difference. You can't just look at what happened at a given time, you also have to analyze why it happened and how it could have been different. Considering what President Obama had to start with and the complete opposition and obstruction from the Republicans, he has been an outstanding President.

I'll only answer your first error, the rest of your post is just nonsense and I won't waste my time. In the 8 years of the Bush administration, 4.9 trillion was added to the debt. In the 3.5 years of zerO's administration, 5.2 trillion was added to the debt. Simple math will tell you that's more than double what Bush spent. Don't take my word for it, Google national debt and many sources will confirm what I say. BTW, when you post lies you hurt your credibility

and make yourself look like an idiot.

Most of [the debt] under President Obama was because of two wars (started by George W. Bush), an unfunded prescription drug plan (initiated by George W. Bush) and the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts. The Obama-sponsored stimulus was approximately $800 billion. The stimulus may not have been very effective, but it's a very small portion of the nation's $14 trillion debt.

Barack Obama became the President of the United States of America on January 20, 2009. Do you get that the wars didn't end on January 19, 2009? Or that the unfunded Medicare prescription drug plan didn't end on January 19, 2009? Or that lowered capital gains tax rates (included an insane 15% rate on carried interest) didn't go up on January 20, 2009?

You're the last person to have any reason to talk about credibility, and as always, you ignore the point and the facts. Bush borrowed 4.9 trillion dollars for no good reason. Obama borrowed money to keep the economy from collapsing.

Bush borrowed money so his friends wouldn't have to pay taxes. Obama borrowed money so that the people wouldn't end up out in the streets and the country under martial law or in complete chaos. You right-wing knuckleheads don't seem to understand how close your irresponsible neocon policies brought this country to a complete financial meltdown. What will it take - something worse than what happened in 2008?

We spent a lot of money on World War II, also, and in those years government spending rose to then-record highs. Do you think we shouldn't have spent the money?

Think for once. Ask yourself why Bush and Obama did what they did. If you do that, and do it honestly, you'll have to admit that Bush did it to serve the interests of a few; Obama did it to serve the best interests of the people, which is what the President is supposed to do.

Oh yes, of course you could. You could show us all how Bush got us away from dependence on oil, saved the economy after someone else ruined it and got bin Laden. Sure you could.

Anyway, all you do is waste everyone's time.

As Proud American points out, most of the debt incurred since Obama became President is a result of Bush's catastrophic policies in war (let's nation build in the Middle East so we can get to the oil!) and at home (let's give all the money to the rich so we can watch them give it back!). Do you have an intelligent response?

Of course you don't. Because it's the truth.

I do get the fact that there's more people on food stamps than ever before, that Gitmo is still open, that unemployment is still over 8%, that zerO pissed billions away on bogus "green" projects, that gas prices are twice what they were when Bush left office, that zerO borrowed over 5 trillion dollars from foreign countries with nothing to show for it and that zerO lied to the american public just about every time he opened his mouth. And I'm just scratching around the edges of zerO's failures.

Patriot and 2Smart are like broken records. Periodically they scream, "the debt, oh my god, the debt" and blame President Obama. I, along with several others on this board, then point out that the primary causes of the national debt are the wars, Medicare and the capital gains tax cuts. Patriot and 2Smart then cut and run, and shift to other issues.

As to what's the right remedy for the economic woes, cuts and austerity measures that punish the working stiff or the unemployed are not it. Look at what austerity has brought in the UK and the rest of Europe. The choice between Romney and Obama will be about what to do with the economy. The US is at 8.1% unemployment and about 2% annual gdp growth. They're not great numbers, but they put the US in much better position than most other industrialized countries.

When you have nothing to say, you say nothing. Bush borrowed money to finance tax cuts for the rich and fund a war we should never have gotten into. Those are not good reasons. Why do you claim Bush doubled the national debt?

We are in big, big trouble. A culture has grown up in this country that is completely unconcerned about facts. Throughout history, great nations have fallen when their people buried the heads in the sand - in Rome, Nero fiddled as the city burned. That's where we are and what today's Republican party represents. Historically, they are going to take us down with their ignorance. So each of us has to work hard to make our own history in a new way. We can do it if we have the intelligence and the will but people like 2stupid4words, a/k/a "Patriot?" will do everything they can to ignore the facts and take us down.

OMG! You can't be this misguided. We are in big trouble and there is a segment of the population that is unconcerned with facts. But then you fly off to la-la land. We're in big trouble because of our debt, we're nearing the point where we can barely make the interest payments and it's because of Obama. Obama has borrowed 5.5 trillion dollars and shows no hint of seeing the cliff he's racing toward. And BTW, Obama is a democrat.

You're dead wrong. If we had stayed on the path Clinton set for us, at great political cost to the Democratic party, we would be in the black.

That is a fact. What say you about it?

Obama inherited the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. He had to choose between more unemployment and more debt. He chose more debt. Those also are facts.

What say you about them?

The Republicans are completely in the pockets of the super-rich, who fund their campaigns. The Democrats are largely in their pockets too but at least they try to give the 99% a chance. Those also are fact.

What say you about them?

You shouldn't call other people misguided when you are the one ignoring the key facts.
